View Full Version : SNES Controller Variations

I got two SNES controllers today and between those and the two I previously own, there seem to be three different variations.

The first one has the SNES logo on the front. The L and R buttons have the letters in a dark gray color. It is part SNS-005

The second one is the same as the first one, however the L and R buttons are not painted dark gray.

The third one has a Nintendo logo on the front (instead of the SNES logo). The back shows the Super Famicom logo and is part SNS-102. It has purple buttons and is in a light gray case.

All of the controllers are 1st party. Does anybody know anything about these differences (sorry, I do not have a digital camera available to take pictures).

Yobo makes a counterfit controller. Ebay is filled with them. They even have a box with Mario on it.

After some research does appear that the third controller might be a Yobo one. Thanks

If it has the 'Nintendo' logo molded into the plastic and the select and start buttons are made of plastic instead of rubber, then it is.

I also have one like the 3rd controller you described. The start/select on mine is rubber and not plastic. Mine came with a used SNES Mini I bought so I always believed they came with the Mini late in the systems life.

They did; my model 2 came with a controller like that.

The model 2 controllers were also sold separately.

One of my friends has a Yobo controller. The A, B, X, and Y buttons seem to be a little smaller than the buttons on a normal controller.

:oops:Sorry for my english but I am french.
I was looking for informations about this question when I saw this thread.
It's perfect cause I just received a genuine new vintage SNS-102 Mario controller ;the one that Yobo counterfeit.
Yoshi64 has the genuine one cause of the famicom logo on the back. The Yobo does not have this.
I will trying to list what is the same and what are the differences.

Differences:
-The colors,
-The cable of the Yobo is not the same,it's cheapest ,the logo nintendo is not written on the connector,
-The sticker around the buttons is greenish on the Yobo instead of grey,
-The logo SuperFamicom on the back of the genuine ,
-A general cheap handing for the Yobo,
- Its written "made in china" on a white stamp on the back of the box for the fake,

I hope that it will help you.Bye\\^_^/

The box with Mario on it ISN'T necessarily a bootleg. Nintendo DID release a controller in this box. I know because I got one from their site a few years back!

It took me a very long time to find a 102 controller that wasn't attached to SNES Model 2. I looked for used auctions on Ebay and was very careful about the pictures. I noted the correct color of the area around the action buttons and differentiated this from the original controller by the stamped Nintendo logo on the front face.

I did not notice the wire which went into the controller. Thank-you for that.

All information on the back of the controller is stamped.

Hello,

Yes.The box with Mario is initially a genuine box of Nintendo but YOBO use/reproduce it to sold their cheap controllers.
The fakes are never sealed in box , the genuine have the shrink wrap that Nintendo often use .

There are atleast to versions, i had a sh!t load of snes controllers, for the USA version the shoulder L and R buttons are in soft and hard grey, also the nintendo is pressed into the front of the controller, this controller came with the 2nd (mini) version of the snes, and you could buy it boxed on its own as well.

In the UK, there are 2 versions as well, one with like grey shoulder buttons and the other version has the L and R pressed into the buttons.

And also 2 super famicom versions as well the first was with the first super famicom and the 2nd with the new (mini version)

- I also made my own controllers out of a mixture of these controllers, a super famicom controller with all red buttons which was and is still pretty cool.

Do the counterfeit controllers still work well?

I have a Super Pad (an officially liscenced controller by Interact), and the buttons don't register very well, and the D-pad often misinterprets the direction you press.

The ASCII Fighter Pad is THE best controller in my opinion. Very well made. Never had any problem with them the way that I have with all the super pad variations, and the memory pads like the Cyberpad and Program Pad. It's a little more ergonomic and a little thicker then the dogbone controllers. I must have about half a dozen of them becuase I like them so much. I tried a lot of controllers and own about 30-40 controllers with only about 5 of the original dogbones.

I have pictures for every controller that I've ever seen for the SNES. Mostly from Ebay- US, German, English, Austrailian. There's almost 600 pics now. Maybe as many as 300-400 different controllers.

DON'T get a Yobo - those controllers are the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen. I bought one from the DP Store not knowing it was a counterfeit (I saw the box and instantly thought it was legit). Seriously though, the buttons hardly work; it's pretty much the worst controller I've ever used. Once I get a new original one I'm just going to chuck this one. It doesn't deserve to be used.

On a Yobo it says SNS-105 and the Nintendo logo looks weird.

I got both of them. The Yobo one, and the SNS-102. The difference is simply absurd!

The yobo sucks big time (if it's a yobo at all. It might be some other counterfeit). The D-pad is shaped differently, and the buttons are hard to press; the overall response is horrible. The cord is too short, and of poor quality. I wasn't expecting it to be good, but still, the actual crapiness of that thing surprised me.

I bought an sns-102 recently, on Mercado Livre (brazilian auction site. It's new and packaged! The seller bought leftover pads from Gradiente, which was once part of Playtronic, the Nintendo licensed distributor here in Brazil. The factory was going to INCINERATE THEM!!! What a crime!

When I got it, I was thought it was fake. Then I found this thread, saw djembefola's pics, and confirmed it was the real thing. And it plays so nice and smooth!

Anyway. I came here to thank you guys (especially djembefola for the images), and it got too long. I'd leave a link to the sellers page for those who are interested in getting a new pad, but I don't know if it's against the forumn's rules or something (might sound like an ad). If it's not, please tell me, and I'll post the link here.

Thanks again!

djembefola, (and anyone who might be interested), here's the link:

Model sns-102. It comes in the oficial brazilian box, with the manual and other booklets, all in portuguese. I don't how much it will cost in euros, 'cause I have no idea of what the posting fees are.

Thanks again! Hope it helps.

It's a good Idea, I'll do that as soon as I can! I don't know if they were made here or imported, though, because the back of the controllers says "made in china", just like the one on you picture. But chances are that Nintendo sent the parts and Gradiente assembled and packaged them.

My Super NES is a brazilian one. I'll check to see if it has "made in brazil" on it. It might clear things out...

They are exactky the same , just the plastic with a smoother feeling for the classic controller.

Is there any trick to finding an official controller on ebay or anyone know a reputable seller that sells official Snes controllers? If not, how about a store on the internet that sells them?

Thanks

:bareass:

The best way to find is eBay (eBay germany,UK and US).the best prices are on eBay US (about25$ for a new controller).
The more difficult is to find a new and genuine controller but it's possible;look at this eBay auction for example (#250256631577)
on eBay germany.

:eek 2:There is a last solution if you really want to have a new one.You can use a Wii snes controller to make a new snes pad. It's what I do for 50$.:eek 2:

:onfire:It would be so cool if you could put pictures of the box and documents inside cause it's an "unknown" version.:onfire:

It took me a long time, I know, but I finally uploaded some images of my sns-102. I had my camera stolen, and haven't bought a replacement yet. The pics I'm posting here were taken by the seller, and sent to me during the buyng process. They're kinda small:

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm46/thom_m/img574.jpg (the pad itself)

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm46/thom_m/img573.jpg (pad inside plastic wrapping and authorized repair shop booklet)

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm46/thom_m/img572.jpg (box, front)

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm46/thom_m/img569.jpg (box, back)

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm46/thom_m/img568.jpg (back of the box and wrapped pad)

I'll see if I can borrow a camera from work and take big, detailed pictures of the box and the booklets.

yea unfortunatly i bought two of these the quality just isnt on par with the original. the l and r buttons are mushy and imprecise requiring too much force to push down. the seem isnt ground down as smooth as a legit snes controller and can be irratating to your hands. and worst of all plastic start and select buttons! im not sure about this but damn the controller cord seems awfully short too, same exact length as the fc twin controllers (ie WAYY too short)
