With FASA studios closed and the Shadowrun IP now under better care, what remains of the disastrous Shadowrun FPS is now being swept under the rug. Team Xbox notes that the official forums for the game are going to be closed. This news comes with hope for a better tomorrow from the ex-FASA folks: "We're going to be closing down the Shadowrun forums in about two weeks. As many of you know, the old FASA crew has mostly moved on to other roles within Microsoft, and that means we don't have enough people to monitor and respond to posts here for the coming year. We'll eventually close down www.shadowrun.com and transition it to the folks working on the next generation of Shadowrun products."Read more of this story (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/01/04/150237&from=rss) at Slashdot.

Hell no, in fact it was quite good! The problem with Shadowrun is that they launched it, an online only game with no single-player whatsoever, at the full $60 pricepoint. That'll turn most of your potential buyers away instantly once the word gets out that there's no single player to sink your teeth into. The game itself was wonderfully balanced and I'd say right on par with Team Fortress 2 as far as class-based team warfare goes. I loved the fact that anyone could purchase any upgrade regardless of how well their class used them (Trolls with the glider were pretty useless, for instance). It's a shame that the game got so much pre-release hate from people wanting another single-player game (wait...you know one's coming eventually), and an even bigger shame that Microsoft bought into that themselves and undercut the best shooter they released this year (yeah, I just went there).

Thank fucking god.

I was among those vocal hate-mongers when the game was first announced as counterstrike with elves and magic. Honestly, the genre is just not my thing, but the main problem that everyone really had was that the game could have been made without certain design elements and using the Shadowrun name, and still would have come out as well as it did. Everyone has been praising the gameplay as exactly what it should be for the type of game it is, and that's fine. There was just no reason to attach the name, fuck with the storyline and background associated with that name, and then tout it as the next step in shadowrun awesomeness.

I stopped following the forums not too long before the game was released. The powers that be said they were thinking about maybe possibly if they get around to it making a true rpg or mmorpg based on the shadowrun world proper, not the semi-verse they created for the fps.

I dunno. I just think they totally missed an opportunity to not suck here.

1-800-MAGIC was pretty funny... the few episopdes they made. But much ike the game it's self had very little to do with SHADOWRUN. I'd like to see someone like Bioware, Obsidian Knights, or Bethesda get a hold of the license next. The series is perfect for a big atmospheric next-gen installment.

Nope, no game on Xbox Live ever really "goes offline," with the possible eventual exceptions of Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy XI, since I believe those servers are run by Sega and Square-Enix, respectively.

That said, it might as well, as I doubt there are many people still playing this, and I sold my copy a while back since Team Fortress 2 has more active players.

Actually, quite a few have gone offline, which is mildly retarded considering how little it takes to keep them up.

AGREE 100 percent: Note to developer...when making a game, do your homework before making a theme related game. I hated this game since I layed my eyes upon it for one reason alone:

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SHADOWRUN AND DID SHIT WITH IT

Taking the Shadowrun name and making the game that they did was JUST FUCKING STUPID

The actual game is so-so, but they should have called it SPACE ELVES

Which games? I'm not being argumentative, just inquisitive. I heard EA took some of their ps2 games offline a while back, did the Xbox counterparts go with them? Always sort of sad to hear about games going offline for good, as I always imagine some yokel out there still playing whatever really obscure crap game gets the plug pulled.

Maybe their next project will be a Counter Strike RPG? A Geometry Wars point and click adventure? A Tekken shmup? Minesweeper MMO, anyone?

Most of the sports titles (especially EA's) drop about 18 months after release, it doesn't matter if its PS2 or Xbox or 360. They want you to buy the new version, not continue to play last years game. Read the fine print on the back of the cases.

I know most of the Tony Hawk games have gone offline as well but this would affect the PS2 side not the 360, since I think only THUG2 and THAW and Project 8 are up and I think the 360 only has THAW and Project8.

I think 2K has shutdown some of their older sports titles on the 360 as well. I know a bunch of the guys on 360voice have commented on locked achievements on those older sports games they can't get now due to the dead servers for them.
