View Full Version : Vertical or Horizontal? How do your consoles rest?

Personally, I'm into the fact that CD based consoles were meant to be played laying down, horizontally, not standing up vertically.
The only console of mine right now that is vertically resting is my Wii, although after 2 DREs, I'm heavily considering laying it down horizontally.
How are your consoles resting in whatever area you play them in?
What are your thoughts about the two different ways to have your
consoles rest?
Have you had problems with the console when it was resting either horizontally or vertically?
I am very curious to see what my fellow DP Forum Members have to say.
Thanks.

PS3 is horizontal, 360 is horizontal (HD ADDON is Vertical), Wii is Horizontal.
My thoughts are cd/dvd games are considered fragile due to scratches. Vertical consoles just make it that much more likely for an accidental slip out of the tray. They also, IMO, equate to a better chance of misalignment and the door closing on the disc.
From a heat standpoint, it rises, and if the console is horizontal the vents are blowing the hot air out and it will rise above the console faster and out of my cab better. because the console is mostly at the bottom.
Space, I can fit all 3 in my entertainment center comfortably and on their own shelf.
Looks: they just look better horizontal like everthing else in the entertainment center.

Horizontal on everything, especially the 360 (for max air-flow).

Ps3, Japanese ps2, Xbox, X'eye, Snes, Nes, are horizontal.
American PS2(fat one) is vertical.

The only system I have ever positioned vertically is the Wii.

Horizontal. I think there's too much risk with the system vertical. My Ps2 is horizontal, my X-Box 360 is horizontal. The disk can slip when putting the game in vertically. Also, there is a chance you can tip the system over.

My PS3 and 360 are horizontal. In the case of the 360, standing it vertically actually cuts yer airflow pretty dramatically. The PS3 just looks better lying down.
The Wii is vertical, purely for space considerations, as is the PS2 in the other room.
It isn't really a hardware consideration for anything but the 360, I don't think.

Wow. It seems that the majority of users around here prefer resting the consoles horizontally and with some very good reasons in doing so.
You've all convinced me. I'll go and set the Wii down horizontally.

just finshed setting up my new tv, and i have my ps2/360 resting horizontally. i have a wii as yet not hooked up that will also be horizontal. regardless of what manufacturers say, i still believe vertical spin of cd is inneficient and detrimental to the motor's health as well as very the high likelyhood of scratches.

all my systems lay horizontal. Too much of a risk with it laying vertical.

Yay! We possibly saved a Wii.

I much prefer horizontal but due to space limitations, my PS2, PS3, 360 and Wii are all currently vertical.
I need a new entertainment centre.

360 is horizontal. Due to space my Wii and PS3 are vertical.

Wii, PS2 and NES-toaster are vertical. I've never had problems with skip on the disk drives.
All my other systems are horizontal as they are not designed to allow for another method. At least, not without serious stability issues.

All mine are horizontal. I tried to stand the Wii vertically, but it kept falling over. Three drops day 1 = no more vertical standing!!

My retired ps2 was vertical for space reasons. My ps3 is vertical for the same space reasons, but my 360 is horizontal because having it vertical blocks one of the major sources of ventilation.
I've got my consoles in a sturdy old stereo cabinet, and the controllers for each are wireless, so no worries about accidentally giving one a premature death by careless ankle.
I keep my PS3 vertical, it stands sturdy and I've had no problems so far.

Same here. I have it in a small room packed with toys and could only put it in vertically with sufficient room for ventilation.

wii, ps3, 360 all horizontal. call me crazy, but the people who build audio/video stands like their horizontal compartments.

All the disc based consoles I've ever owned have been kept horizontal.
However I gave my girlfriend a slim PS2 for Xmas a few years back, she's kept that vertical (with the Sony stand) and we've never had any issues with it.

To say "I like my Wii vertical" sounds perverted, so I won't say it.

I used to have trouble keeping my Wii vertical. Then my local Gamestop employee told me about Wiialis. It is clinically proven to both go to work fast, and in as little as 30 minutes for some systems.
In rare instances, consoles taking LED tablets (including WIIALIS) reported disc read errors and loss of power. It's not possible to determine if these events are related directly to the LED tablets or to other factors. If your console has sudden read errors or will not turn on, stop taking any LED tablet and call your Gamestop right away.
