Personally I have thought about this alot. I would open up an 80s retro arcade. Only early 80s arcade games, all mint condition. It would have the complete atmosphere like a time capsule. I would spend the money and get whats right. I would sell pop and snacks at 80s prices and have tournaments like top score on Ms.Pac Man $10 000 to create huge interest and fun haha. Ahh... If only I was rich.

It depends on what lottery in the state based on money. I would by homebrew games for the 2600 and 7800. Anything else would be based on the amount I win. There are some games I would buy to complete for some systems that I own depending on the lottery amount.

I'd buy one of those Loft type buildings, where you can live in it and take an pull door down elevator up to certain floors.(like you se in the movies)
I'd live there with family, totally make the place liveable, wood floors etc..
And would have Arcade machines and especially pinball machines lining the Walls with some machines in 2-4s in the center around the concrete pillars.
One floor would have just to ride Pocketbikes and Go Karts..and if I had a lot I'd make my own track to host racing events.

I thought about the retro arcade, but I think I would go with a lan-center with a retro-room with classic consoles and some arcade machines...

You would NEED to be rich. I owned an arcade with two different walls of games; one classics, and one modern, as well as ten pool tables. Lasted two years, but at least I fulfilled one of my dreams :)
But yeah, it would be fun to own one and not have to worry about making money to keep it open.
I'd rebuild my collection, and build a polebarn to house them all in. Decorated in 80s splendor, of course (My apologies to, and no envy I swear of, Peter Hirschburg :) )

yhea, i was wondering that to. honestly i would probibly give up serious collecting. i know it sounds really wierd but alot of the appeal of collecting for me is the challenge (one such challenge being affordability) if i have a huge amount of money i could pretty much get whatever i wanted for whatever price.
no challenge. no joy from finding a "great deal". less appriciation for what i do buy. it would just drain alot of the fun out of the hobby.
yes, i would still play games and buy systems but i would probibly just drift to being more of a casual gamer then a collector.

I'd buy a few cabs/pinball machines nothing extravagant though and put them in a nice house (probably spend around half a million on the house) and I'd take a trip to Japan for sure.
If I had a shit ton of money I'd fund the rest of the shenmue project to.
And of course buy some nice cars. Oh and a high end gaming pc like a voodoo omen or falcon northwest mach v something I could never see buying otherwise

I'd build a huge building designed for just gaming and housing games. The only thing I would buy would be some modern stuff that I just can't afford now. I'd continue shopping garage sales and flea markets for everything else.

Asteroids upright
Star Wars sit-in with Empire Strikes Back kit set up with a switch
Tempest upright
Ms Pac Man/Galaga combo
Daytona USA - 2 player
Sega Rally Championship - 2 player
Space Harrier sit-in with hydraulics
That's all I need, plus my current collection. I would certainly get that Saturn Hyper Duel and a couple others I can't afford.
And of course, I would build a house with a room dedicated to gaming.

To be honest, if I won the lottery, gaming would be the last thing on my mind. I'd probably buy a house, pay off my bills...and maybe get another cat or two. And a new car. But as for gaming? I have enough.

I'm with you on everything but the cats. I have so many games it's reasonable to assume I'll never get to put in the right amount of quality time with each of them, and I continue to build my library.

I'd quit gaming.
Seriously. Gaming is one of the things I do as a hobby because I don't have the time or money to do everything I actually want to with my life. With the freedom a fortune would give me, I'd be too busy traveling around the world, going back to music school, and having fun nights out on the town to play video games.

Much of what I think is summed up here. Much like playing the Sims loses interest when you've maxed out your career path and the money is rolling in, I think I would lose interest in collecting if I had massive funds.
I think I would instead try to open a world class video game museum.

I love to collect and play, I would still do that. Buy some good games 360, ps3 and hd tv. I would either upgrade my house or sell it and buy something with more land. I already have so much dedicated to gaming here I would do it in my other house to. I would get a newer car too. Maybe a 2003 or something, or a hybrid.

Definitely set up a home arcade, 1980s style. Also, grab the systems that seem to be continually out of my reach (Neo Geo AES & MVS, Turbo Duo, etc...). Maybe build a giant Pac-Man maze to screw around in, like in Club Dread.

Yeah, it would be fun to have your own studio, especially when there's not so much pressure to make a buck. Like a labor of love!
For me, I can't see how my gaming spending habits would get any worse. I already spend a disproportionate amount on gaming, so nothing would likely change. I've got the car I want, but one could always use more, right? :) I'd probably just get a nice house + land, and build the ultimate in gaming rooms in there (as well as spaces for my other interests).

Well that would all depend on how much I got from the lottery.
Let's say a million.
I'd buy lots of buildings and rent them out.
Then I'd start spending. I wouldn't do much collector wise because I'm losing interest in collecting, No instead I'd buy new games to play.

Nothing. I would buy or do nothing related to games. My interest is nearly zero, at least as far as collecting goes. I still want to be a gamer and want to concentrate now on enjoying what I do have (which is quite a lot) instead of always feeling dissatisfied, always having to get more.
Instead, I would travel, travel, travel. I would spend my money to have good experiences, not possessions. I may have said this before, and forgive me if I am repeating myself, but one of the happiest times in my entire life was a six and a half week period where I spent the first half in Ukraine on a short-term mission trip and the second backpacking across Europe. All I had was the rucksack on my back and nothing else in the world, and I was overjoyed.
I will still spend my money on having good experiences and traveling; I could just do tons more if I won the lottery.

if i won the lottery, especially depending on the money:
1. 10% to Jesus/church
2. Set my family up (pay off parents house, pay off brothers house, inlaws...well screw em, allot money to family members and close friends they would not be able to touch but would have to place in a CD or Roth IRA or other special interest accts.) Basically everybody related to me including best friends would have a comfortable retirement and not have to worry about paying for college.
3. GAMING--- ok. First i would go ahead and complete my snes collection with ALL mint complete games. Hell i would probably try to complete collections for all the systems i own currently which is 12 or 13 i think. My wife and i would have a nice 4500 sq ft modest but nice home with a mini arcade and at least one regulation pool table. BTW, the arcade would include Midway's original NBA JAM and MKII machines.

Video Game wise, assuming this was a HUGE sum of money... I'd pay some talanted dev companies to ressurect the PC-Engine Super Grafx, and make kick ass games specifically for it, along with getting Capcom to finally make STRIDER HIRYU for the system + deliver an SGX original sequel based off the PSX/arcade version, along with a part III to finish of the series. I always like the design of the SGX system better than any other (reminded me of a William Gibson descrption of a Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7 Cyberspace Matrix Deck... sort of), and was sad the system never really took off. Or better yet, have a newer model capable of much more than SGX and call it the SGX Phoenix (as in back from the fires of death), and it be backwards compatible with the original SGX, + accept much bigger and badder HU-Cards + have an internal (Sony PS3 like) feedin High Def DVD drive that would also serve & read all existing ACD/SCD/ and CD-ROM games from all territories. 8-Button controlers, (2) Ports, be capatible with high def TVs as well as Standard, and come with cupons to a love hotel in Japan for hard up Gaijins. LOL
...Seriously though. I'd love to see what might have been with the SGX system, and the idea of a supped up SGX has always been a gamer's fantasy of mine. Catering specifically to the die-hard niche gamers market around the world who'd go ape shit for something like this idea. Outside of video games though, I'd hand over a cool 10 or 15 million (assuming it's a HUGE amount) to John Carptenter and tell him to match it somehow and get [i]Escape from Earth made with Kurt Russell.

Really depends on how much I win, if it was the motherload like $125 million...figure..after taxes walk out with like $60 mil...then I'd go crazy completing all my collections - id have a complete library for every system out there. I'd buy a nice new house to set it up in, have a built in arcade..the possibilities are endless. - or I'd be like..ok Sega..heres 60 million USD, MAKE ANOTHER CONSOLE...on me

Other than that, if I had an insane amount of money I'd go to Japan and start a new company and make a new video game system, one that would specialize in 2D gaming (Hopefully create a more defined niche market) and gamers would consider it "The PC Engine/Neo Geo of the future".

First I would move into a bigger house and convert the bottom room into the ultimate room of doom. Arcade machines for some classics not all but a select few, skee ball. That giant 150" HD TV they just displayed hooked up to everything known to man in the videogame world. Nothing modded unless it helps the console load faster and/or allows us to play cool Jap games.
When I lived in Riverside CA, there was an arcade called the Castle. My eyes will never forget walking into a 3 story plus a basement converted arcade. I want to create that experience once more.

I would probably go for the Room of Doom Gold for arcade machines. I'd probably try to lease out a big building and put as many of the large/special cabinets in there. All the full body car racers from Sega, etc. Then I'd open it to the public as a regular arcade. If I had enough dough not to have to penny pinch because of repairs, maintenance, power, taxes, etc., it would work.

If we're talking multi-millions, I think I'd open up a video-game museum, filled with every known video-game, every known system, and as much VG related memorabilia as I could find. I'd let the doors be open to the public (I think it's important for our industry to have something like this to show people how gaming evolved, just like they have for movies and music), and have narrated tours, special meets for retrogaming functions, guest speakers, and basically create the ultimate tourist trap for anyone into gaming.

i.e. Tokyo Wars, Brave Firefighters, Daytona USA 2, Star Wars Arcade Trilogy,
Scud Race, Sega Rally 2, Air Combat 22, Solar Assault, After Burner Climax
I'd also bribe videogame companies for unreleased & beta games. Not only that, I'd offer them money to complete games that were canceled or in the planning phase i.e. Dando, Moon Dancer, Altered Beast 2 for MD/Genesis,
Hi-Ten Bomberman for NEC PC98/PC88 + Coregrafx
Phantasy Star IV for SegaCD, Secret of Mana for SNES CD-ROM,
Magician Lord 2, Crystalis 2 for NEO*GEO CD and hundreds of others.

That IS an excellent idea. One of the first things that come to mind would be to show the younger generations what the original video games were like (and they would probably LOVE it) and no doubt it would also attract many who grew up playing the games. Have a builder design it in the form of a Pac Man or Space Invader for asthetics - you would probably get a couple of minutes TV air-time and some small magazine writeups for novelty. As for my own collection, i'd locate the purest Phoenix, Zaxxon, Ms. Pac Man, Crazy Kong, Stargate, and Star Wars Arcade units PLUS find someone to build me an all-in-one console that plays every game ever made for an Atari system, ColecoVision, Genesis, SNES, NES, and C64. AND everything connected to a UPS/backup - can never get too paranoid!

I think this is what i posted in the last thread like this but i'll expand. I would make a major effort to open a game publishing company aimed towards releasing a lot of the Simple Series releases to the US audience.
But the main thing outside of house/ large apartment with gaming centric room would be an epic trip to Japan. I wouldnt go spending my money on every damn game possible (I do admit that i would buy some interesting odds and ends) but the trip will be purely a hunt. I would spend my time going to all sorts of stores tracking down a complete wonderswan collection as well as wierd box sets, documentation, prototypes, betas, and anything esle i could possibly find.
