It's quite playable, but you won't know what the fuck is going on (storyline-wise) if you don't know Japanese. When I first played through it, I mostly stumbled on through based on my experience with the previous games (especially Metal Gear Solid 2). Back then I had a lot more patience for just fucking off in games, too.... I never knew you had to look on the back of the cd case for Meryl's codec freq, I just stumbled on it while hunting for a music test option. You've gotta be observant while you play so that you can catch nuances like the PAL key color changing.

If you have any interest in following the storyline at all or if you don't have the patience to figure out the puzzles without any in game clues via codec, just play the English or Integral versions. The Japanese version is easier by default, IIRC (normal difficulty in the Japanese version = Easy in the US version), but I guess that's kind of offset by the language barrier :)

Anyone remember the inital us demo was in japanese.

In the demo the text was English, the rest was not. So, you're right.
