The GPS receiver for the Sony PSP is about to find its way out of Japan (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/31/psp-gps-and-camera-priced-and-dated-in-japan/) and into US gamers' hands. According to Sony's CES 2008 page, "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_of_Interest), and even downloadable city guides."
No official release date or price - the peripheral in Japan retailed for approximately US $51. Of course, if you're impatient, you can always hack the PSP now (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/25/impatient-add-gps-to-your-psp-the-hard-way/).

It's about time! Now I might buy a PSP again. With more quality games (Loco Roco was the only game that I TRULY loved) and this GPS unit, I might keep it this time around.

That's good news for US PSP owners ... every day the thing becomes more and more of a multimedia powerhouse that expands exponentially upon it's initial investment.
However, I'm curious, does the PSP GPS provide driving style turn-by-turn directions?
As great as GPS technology is (probably my new favorite inexpensive technology of 2007) I can't imagine being able to use a PSP for driving directions and manipulating the settings "on the fly" while driving as smoothly as a touch screen Tom-Tom or Garmin unit.
Still, $50 is less than half of the least expensive GPS on the US market now (about $125 for a Tom-Tom One).

I could see this working very well in the US. I would definately invest the money in it. Now is the GPS going to require any kind of extra hardware at all? is it going to be downloadble software for the memory stick? or is it going to come on a UMD? I'd like to know these details. Also wouldn't mind seeing a video of at least the Japanese version up and running.

I can play shitty games and keep from getting lost? sweet.
Ill wait till it also flips sideways like an ngage and becomes a phone before I buy one.
Oh also it should make toast and have a built in rectal thermometer.

As far as requirements go, from what I've read, the US version needs to be on a PSP Slim (for the extra onboard ram/processing) and it'll include a little satellite receiver antenna for the top USB port.
I'm assuming that it'll include a UMD software disc, or have a downloadable software package, and will have updatable maps and turn-by-turn audio (like most GPS units) via software updates.

That's the original Japanese version ... I believe that Murph and Joe have tinkered with it on PSP's in the store ... they should be able to elaborate on it's functionality.

Until I can find a GPS that actually displays updated and current streets, I'm not going to bite. Every GPS (including Google Maps and Mapquest) I've seen still has my local street connecting with a major avenue. They haven't connected for over 7 years. If this is representative of how reliable GPS directions are, I'll pass.

Silly threadcrapping troll. The PSP has a TON of fantastic games, something you'd know if you actually knew what you were talking about, which - on this particular subject - you obviously don't. Do you even own one? I'll reel off a list of great PSP games if you'd like. Just ask.
As for the GPS, I'd love to get one when it comes out, but I've only got an original PSP. Hopefully it will end up working on both models because I don't see myself buying a new PSP just so I can use the GPS unit.

That sucks that it needs to be on a Slim.....but didn't the Japanese GPS work on the original PSP?
Hopefully there will be some kind of patch that will allow it to work on my PSP Phat.
Anyway, if it works on my system, I'd be all over this. I'd mount my PSP between the handlebars on my Ruckus and use the GPS on rides, lol.

I wonder if SEGA will release their star gazing software for the USA market now? I always wanted it, but it was all in Japanese.

It's pretty obvious that you don't like the system, and, it's pretty obvious that you'll likely respond to any games listed with some other snarky response ... but saying that the PSP has no good games is like saying that the DS doesn't have hundreds of pieces of shovelware licensed kids game GARBAGE on it.
Just off the top of my head ...

What you need is to stop being a troll and actually try and make some legitimate, substantive contribution to these forums, but that's about as likely as me flapping my arms and flying away. Frankie already mentioned quite a few excellent titles for the PSP, but here's some more:
Exit
Jeanne D'Arc
Dead Head Fred
Every Extend Extra
Gradius Collection
Chili Con Carnage
Gurumin
Sid Meier's Pirates
Field Commander
Disgaea
Sega Rally Revo
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Between my list and Frankie's you've got about 50 games. Want me to start on imports next?

No, not an item with Hawksmoor, but I do make sweet sweet love with Phil Harrison when he's in town in exchange for access to the HOME beta and demo copies of God of War Chains of Olympus.

Lolz.
Sothy is the reason I come to this forum. ;)
Seriously, dude, lighten up on Sothy, not that he's a short bus kid or anything.
(Looks at Sothy's posts....looks at Hawk's posts)
Lolz again!
I have a feeling he's contributed substantially in pure volume alone, dude. I'd say about 3700% more than you have.
Perhaps you aren't used to his awesome humor.

His behavior is basically the definition of a forum troll. You'll have to forgive me if I don't see the inherent appeal in that. I gather you think he's funny. I don't. You do though I guess, so that's cool; different strokes for different folks.

Wow, a post count nazi. That's a new one.
Honestly, trying to tie the worth of what someone says to their post count is something I'd expect from a child. I judge the content of what people say for what it is; the number of times they've said something has no bearing whatsoever on the quality or validity of that content.
Perhaps you aren't used to his awesome humor.
Or perhaps he's not as funny as he and his fans seem to think he is.

cool device for sure if I hadn't just bought a GPS device ($220) I'd buy this but oh well my psp is primarily focused on gaming as far as I'm concerned (some music and video uses as well)
