View Full Version : Does anyone play the 3DO anymore?

I only ask because I actually have a 3DO website up that was jumping for a bit because of the release of the games last year from Oldergames.com. Since then, things got a bit warm and were fun and then; nothing. My site sits there and does nothing. 3DOZero even seems to have died down quite a bit. Seems the 3DO is back to being the ultimate bastard child of gaming.

I actually want the OLDERGAMES games (does anyone have any or know where I can get some) and would love to see your site. What is the web address?

I'm in the boat of still needing a system. I have a couple of games but am out of space and can't afford to keep piling items into my current living space. Once I graduate then it'll become a feasible option and finally begin enjoying quite a few games I've looked forward to.

Have fun finding the oldergames releases. It appears that the guys that did Beggar Prince took over oldergames. I am trying to get the information to see if they will be supporting the 3DO or not. Also, seems pointless to me to buy up a company to do nothing with it, so something nas to be up their sleeves.
The web address to 3DO Maniac is;

I think they just wanted the promotion the site already has, they didn't buy the company just the web address. Super Fighter Team also said they have no interest in disc based games although I would love to have Icebreaker 2

Hmm, not really a smart move though as oldergames seemed to just about piss everyone off here at the end. Not the kind of promotion or recognition I would want.

I picked up a 3DO in 2006, but it was busted. Still haven't found a decently priced new one...at this point it seems like I may have to bite the bullet and pay the 50 bucks the one store is asking for.

50 bucks for a 3DO is a good price as long as it isn't a Goldstar unit.

My first 3do was a goldstar in box w/ gex(w/ back insert) and loose copys of Madden and FIFA. all for $25 probably 3-4 years ago. My second was my friends(And his dead fathers) collection of games for $50 w/ FZ-10 about 12 complete good condition games including Lemmings, all 3 Shockwaves, Immercenary, Psychic Detective +More and some games that had the small boxes like Primal Rage, BC Racers, Braindead 13 and more. also in the lot was a bunch of genesis, sega cd, and saturn. also some controllers a sega cd system and a genesis, this was about 2 years ago. My newest 3DO was the FZ-1 TESTERS UNIT! I got it from a local shop with the game gun and 3d0 station invasion all for $100. It was a great deal I think. I got this one last summer. I LOVE 3DO.

My 3DO has been sitting in storage along with about ten other systems I currently don't have the room to hook up or time to play. I really do miss it though; I could definitely go for some Star Control II, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Return Fire, Road Rash, Slam N Jam, and Twisted. I really wish there was a good 3DO emulator that I could run on my GP2X or PSP. Hell, afaik there isn't a good 3DO emulator period. If I'm wrong and someone knows of one, by all means let me know.

the 3do was never had a huge following, it doesn't surprise me that your site traffic has fallin. there is a few hardcore 3do fans, but their numbers are not that large. Hell a lot of the younger crowd doesn't even know what a 3do is.
btw, I too still need to find Star Control 2, it's one of the few games I've yet to play and still want to on the 3do.

I walk past my 3DO all hooked up every day but I have a hard time finding the time for it. I look at it and want to play it but then I look at the copy of Mass Effect I have and start getting the urge to play that, so I do it. I love 3DO and every time I look at it, I want to play it. Its a good system.
I played Shanghai: Triple Threat with my kids last night

The 3DO is one of the few older systems i still have hooked up. Which is for two reasons. One: I have yet to set up an emulator for it on my living room emu-box, and Two: Because the Panasonic Version actually has a sort of classy look to it. When it sits in my home theater area, it sort of looks like it "belongs." It's not the conversation piece the Vectrex is, but I do get lots of "Whats that!??" questions.
As for the last time I played it? I think a year and a half ago. I had an ex-g/f that i've known since high school visiting, and we decided to play our favourite two games for the thing. The highly underrated Pataank, and Theme Park.

Pataank, man I actually love that game. I laugh when so many people talk crap about it because most of the people that do played it and don't understand what it really is. I love that game. It's been a hot minute because of moving stuff around, but my Japanese FZ-1 gets hooked up this weekend fpr a run at Escape From Monster Manor! :D

I have a 3DO, but I haven't really spent much time playing it. The only game I owned was Road Rash, and while it's a really good game, I wasn't willing to donate my limited console space to a system I only had one game for.
However, after I got a couple of 3DO games from my Secret Santa this year, and finally managed to find a copy of the atrocious 'Plumbers Don't Wear Ties', I've started to get more interested in hooking it up.
Today, I grabbed copies of AD&D: Slayer, Need for Speed and Twisted from the local game shop. I remember playing Twisted a lot when my family rented a 3DO from a game rental store years ago, and I'm actually looking forward to trying it out again. The same store that I bought the games from also has a FZ-1 complete in box for $60 (though I could probably negotiate that down), which I'd much rather have than my Goldstar unit. I actually might end up going back to get that. :)

When I first got my 3DO (from forum member VACRMH, thanks Vaccy!) I fell in love with it for a some reason. After getting a few games for it (complete or atleast boxed) I loved the way the boxes looked lined up on a shelf so I won an ebay auction for like 50 boxed some complete 3do games for like $225. I got some of the better games like return fire, star control 2, street fighter, shockwave series, wing commander series, and I was also very suprised with the game monstermanor which was a fun shooter. I havent played my 3DO in quite some time but it still remains one of my favorite systems!
Also I won this banner on ebay, guy said it was official but I have no idea if its true. It eems agd so probably not a recent screen printing or anything, theres a wooden stick in the top and bottom of the banner and its made of a matte sily material (if that even makes sense!) anyone seen one of these? (sorry for bad pictue of it, just pulled it from years old rom pictures)

on another note. Return of the living dead is awesome because of the quotes like:
-
Chuck: Hey, Casey, do you like sex with death?
Casey: Yeah, so fuck off and die.
-
Ernie Kaltenbrunner: What the hell are in those bags?
Burt Wilson: ...Rabid weasels.
Ernie Kaltenbrunner: What? What the hell are you doing with a bunch of rabid weasels?
Burt Wilson: That's what I was trying to explain to you here, Ernie; they came in as part of a shipment. Of course, they weren't supposed to be rabid.
-
Trash: Do you ever wonder about all the different ways of dying? You know, violently? And wonder, like, what would be the most horrible way to die?
Spider: I try not too think about dying too much.
Trash: Mm. Well for me, the worst way would be for a bunch of old men to get around me, and start biting and eating me alive.
Spider: I see.
Trash: First, they would tear off my clothes...
Chuck: Hey, somebody get some light over here, Trash is taking off her clothes again.

Bringing the thread back. I finally got my hands on a copy of "The Eye of Typhoon". You know, for it's time, it's a pretty solid fighter. Not sure if it's worth what people on Evilbay are charging for it, but a fun game nonetheless. Also found a brand new copy of "The Incredible Machine" at Game Dude and a complete copy of Immecrenery. Both games are awesome, with Immercenery being one of the most underrated games on the system. Interest was resparked again after an excellent write up of the system in the latest Retro Gamer magazine from Will Matthews. Great read if you haven't seen it and full or "REAL" facts about the system and not the revisionist Internet History you see so much of Youtube and Wikipedia these days. After 20 years, my FZ-1 is still functioning to this day, knock on wood. Take that PSX after 8 of them since it came out.

I have a Panasonic drawer loader, purchased about a year ago, along with about twenty games. Excellent system, and I love the way many of the games take me back to mid-90's Windows PC gaming. Just don't find much time for playing any systems these days, 3DO included.

Man, does that nail the 3DO appeal.
It still holds some of my favorite games from the era. The best version of Road Rash, awesome Street Fighter II port, Bladeforce, and plenty of goofy, kitschy FMV stuff that always somehow (embarrassingly) pulls me in.
For a lot of the games, the 3DO port stands as their best versions. In terms of video, nothing really compared unless you're bumping heads with PC editions. I truly wish we would have seen ports like NBA Jam since the original never had a perfect console edition. EA did great work too, so it's a shame NHL/MLB/NBA titles never saw light. There's a real passion to those EA titles, completely lost on the studio now. Seeing pics of the dev team, celebrating their work in the public eye, is unfortunately rare.

Honestly, the 3DO never was of interest for me. Back in the early to mid 90s all I focused on was Genesis, SNES and later PS1, Saturn and N64. The 3DO was never on my radar. The internet years later shed some light to me about the 3DO and it's safe to say I didn't miss much. It's always fun looking through my old EGM's and even back then the 3DO never got as much love as the other systems obviously.

Anyone into the Shockwave series? That's one series right there that was exclusive to the console and well worth it. I know that later the first game was ported to the Playstation and Saturn, but that port is missing so much of the polish that the 3DO version has it's just really sad to see it anywhere else. The second game was just amazing for it's time. Very well put together game that really showed off the capabilities of the system.

Really? I would have been all over that Bust a Move had I known you had it for sale. Guardian War I have though, so down the road, if you still want to let them go, I'd probably snag them both as a buddy of mine is into 3DO and barely has any games and Guardian War is well worth the purchase so it would make a great gift.

Are there five games that justify purchasing a 3DO?
Arkanoid_Katamari
03-19-2014, 01:43 AM
I don't have one myself, but I probably will get one sooner or later, cuz I'm just like that. But I've never played one, I know nobody whose even heard of a 3Do either. What's stopped me from getting one so far, is that any FMV I can play on my Sega CD, and it seems that a lot of the games on the system I can find on PS1 or some other system, so I've yet to have a need. Road Rash is fun, but it's not gonna get me to buy a whole system.
I love obscure consoles tho, so I will pick one up sooner or later. I have seen 3Do games in the wild, but never an actual console. There's a bunch more I plan to get before the 3Do though, like the Turbografx and Atari 7800. I just finally got all the Sega consoles tho, so that cost me enough money for now, and they will keep me busy enough for now. The only one I'm missing is whatever that thing was they made before the Master System.

Looks like a cool system tho, I just know very little about the games.
Are there five games that justify purchasing a 3DO?
Easily...
1. Out of this World (Another World) - Best version of this game BY FAR
2. Road Rash - Easily the best version of Road Rash all-time.
3. Gex - This was the original platform game for 3DO, yes it appeared elsewhere, but if you want to play it where it was born....
4. AD & D Slayer - Ok, this was Skyrim, like 20 years before Skyrim.... Although I'm not sure it would be fun to play in 2014 (just too damn long)
5. Alone in the Dark - Basically without this game, Resident Evil wouldn't have happened a couple of years later.
Honorable Mention:
1. Escape From Monster Manor - Very good early doom clone if you forgive the fact that they don't have ceiling or floor textures.
2. Wolfenstein - I think this probably the best version of Wolfenstein on a console. Amazing music.
3. Sewer Shark - better video quality than Sega CD
4. The Horde - tower defense, the early years
5. Fifa Soccer - different camera angles were mind blowing back in 1994
6. Shockwave - doesn't hold up very well, but was pretty amazing in 1994
7. Return Fire - kinda like combat redone for mid 90's
8. Night Trap - again, better video quality than Sega CD
9. Need for Speed - might as well see where the series started, although I think the handling was kinda "boat-like" if you ask me.
10. Bladeforce - underrated game where you're flying around in a jetpack.

Basic question, is this a 32 bit system?? I'm not against buying any console, myself, but Road Rash is not a seller, for me. I did play a ton of Road Rash when I was little on Sega Genesis, so I'm quite familiar, and a fan of the series though. But to put it in perspective, I bought my Saturn for Nights into Dreams, and in the 90s I got a Playstation for Metal Gear Solid and Tony Hawk.

Some folks, including this reviewer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbw1xB2uqAs#t=606), think the 3DO port is the best Road Rash game of all time. It definitely looks far more sophisticated/polished than the Genesis games.

The 3DO has really good ports of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and Samurai Shodown. Also Total Eclipse is a good game.
The 3DO doesn't really have one single game that really justifies it's purchase. It doesn't have that one killer app.
However, it does have about 20 to 30 really good games that are worth messing around with. What's kinda sad, is that the 3DO is like the red-haired stepchild of 90's gaming. There is more love out there for the 32X and the Jaguar. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Jaguar, but if I'm honest with myself, the Jaguar really shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with the 3DO. I think the overall breadth of the 3DO lineup kills the Jaguar.
And the 32X... Don't even get me started on the 32X...
I think the real reason the 3DO doesn't get much of any respect, is because such a small number of people owned the 3DO in 1993 and 1994 and early 1995. They didn't get to appreciate it for what it was, before the Playstation and Saturn arrived. The arrival of the Playstation, was basically a death knell for the 3DO. Still, anybody that played Crash N Burn in 1993, or played Total Eclipse in early 1994, or played Monster Manor in early 1994 or Madden 3DO, or Road Rash... If you played it in 1993 or 1994 you were pretty amazed by what you were experiencing, but so few people played it during those years. It was just too damned expensive. By the time it became afordable, the PS1 and Saturn had arrived and the 3DO was a mere afterthought. Most people remember it as being a system that couldn't hold the Playstation's jock strap, but what they failed to realize is that the 3DO was the bee's knees all throughout 1994. I had some absolutely awesome experiences with the 3DO in 1994 and early 1995.
Sure, once the Saturn arrived with the sneak attack, I was off in La-La Land, and then the Playstation soon followed, and that was pretty much all she wrote for the 3DO, but man... 93, 94 and early 95 was a special time to be a 3DO owner.
