I was riding the MARTA train today (Atlanta) and sat down right across from a guy who was playing a Sega Game Gear. People were staring at him like he was holding the coolest new technology EVER. I'd have loved to have known what he was playing. I wanted to speak to him but he was listening to headphones that were attached to a portable CD player. That in itself was kind of funny... I hardly ever see portable CD players any more.

There, there. Perhaps I should have mentioned that he was wearing a sharp-looking suit and had a laptop case by his side.

I hope that makes you feel better.

Maybe he had to save up for his suit and laptop. So he could only afford a GG and CD player.

You have no idea how funny people look at you when you play a Virtual Boy in public. Neither do I really, as I was the one playing the Virtual Boy. But according to my brother's descriptions, people looked at me like I was a mime trying not to scream at an LSD induced hallucination.

I actually carried my Game Gear around with me for a while after I got Gunstar Heroes for it. Then I beat it and haven't had reason to take it out since.

I'm hardly poor and I still own a portable cd player, which I even listened to a couple of albums on today. I have little to no interest in MP3's, i-Pods and the like. Sure, I could afford to upgrade to newer technology for listening to music but what I have works for me.

As for the Game Gear, a guy can be poor and still throw together enough dough to get a Gameboy Color or original Gameboy Advance both of which are newer products. So I can't imagine he was so hard up he had to "settle" for a Game Gear.

So my theory is, he either enjoys the Game Gear and portable cd player or he really did time travel from 1991.

With that said, Overbite, I'm sure you weren't being completely serious :)

Haha, rocking the old school technology. You should've told him that he's the man. I used to pack all sorts of old handhelds with me like my Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color. It was a good way to used up all the batteries I had kicking around. Now that I got an SP, though, I don't need to bother with buying batteries at all, so I stick to that. I guess at this point, though, even that looks old since practically all I ever see these days is the DS (in terms of Nintendo handhelds). It also doesn't help that I usually have a black and white Game Boy cart sticking out of my SP. :P

I don't think I'd ever take my Game Gear outside with me. Too huge and I don't want to buy all those batteries and have them drained in no time. I prefer to just sit myself next to an outlet at home and use the AC adapter. Granted, I barely touch the Game Gear as it is.

CD players still rock, though. I don't see the point of buying CDs if you never listen to the music directly off of them. That's about the only way I listen to music at home, but I do go for the iPod when outside just out of convenience of it being so small and having the equivalent of dozens of CDs on it.

Isn't if funny when you pull out old game technology people get drawn to it like flies to a light?

Whenever I take out my Game Gear people are always amazed. If you want to go further then you bring the battery, Even more? Try an Atari Lynx. Or if you just want to listen to hip cool tunes.. Well just buy a Sega CDX and use it as your personal CD player. Either way people are going to be amazed because it's so extremely out of the norm.

I sit on trains in absolutely gorgeous Paul Smith/Hugo Boss/Armani etc. suits and shirts playing on my NGPC. I've also recently acquired a GameGear, which may also get a public outing on my next business trip.

I play them because MotM is the best handheld fighter ever, and I've always loved the GameGear.

I do get some funny looks off people when I put away the Mac Book and whip out the Neo Pocket, but it doesn't bother me at all. It makes me smile. Especially people sat there all smug fiddling away on their uber-phone. I laugh. I'm wearing made-to-measure suits, beautiful ties, shirts and shoes and I generally look scrumptious. My cufflinks cost more than matey's whole outfit and he sits giving me funny looks cos I'm playing a Neo Pocket. WTF? I couldn't give a toss what mobile phone you have, i hate the damn things and they're really not a fashion icon. Especially when he's dressed in a cheap-ass suit that doesn't fit properly, and I'm looking like a damn fashion model.

It can also be a good ice-breaker too. Inquisitive young ladies want to know what you're fiddling with.....

I'd be careful using the word 'poor' in public too, because personally, I'd put you through the nearest brick wall head first.

So, fair play to matey on the train. Game on......

I still listen to music on my MD player and play my Neo Pocket in public, but I guess I'm not as cool as this guy. But then, he's not as cool as some hypothetical guy listening to a Walkman and playing a MicroVision, so that makes me feel better.

Where does humming to yourself and playing tic-tac-toe on the window fit in, though?

A friend of mine just spent $500 on a CD/MP3 player with two trays... it's for DJ scratching, sampling and mixing. He also dropped $40 on a portable CD player so he can begin listening the second he picks a new disc up. It may be out of fashion to some but he's still rocking it with 4 turn tables ($200 each) and 2 mixers ($250 each) at home and on the road. You just can't judge people from the technology they use unless you really know them, and even then you should just be happy they have a use for it. Because you buy cheaper (and generally used) classic/retro games instead of just $60 new releases does that make you poor or pathetic? Just have fun and enjoy life.

I play my Game Boy Light in public all the time - the odd person wonders at the fact I can continue playing on public transit after sunset, but most people hardly give me a second glance... I'd love to play my Game Gear, Nomad or Lynx on the train, but my bag's heavy enough as it is...

A fellow Atlantan; we're definitely a rare breed here on the DP forums. I only ride MARTA occasionally to go downtown or to Hartsfield, and I've never noticed anyone playing any handheld when I've been on the train (other than myself, of course). I did get cornered by a homeless guy at the Brookhaven station one time when he saw my iPod and began asking me a litany of questions about it.

As for the portable CD players, those seem to be common amongst train riders in my limited experience. I usually find them very annoying because a lot of people have a tendency to play their music so loudly that I can hear every note and lyric even if they're wearing headphones. Anyway, I won't be impressed until I get on the train and see someone playing a Vectrex.

I've seen a few people playing Game Boy Colors on the bus, but that's about it for pre-GBA handhelds.*

The last time I played a Game Gear away from home was when I bought one off of Craigslist last summer. I tested it when I met the seller and since he included batteries, I wound up playing some NBA Jam during a 15 minute wait for a bus downtown. Didn't get any comments. I wouldn't play a GG on the go again, though - the battery life and the screen make that pretty inconvenient (then again, I couldn't even if I wanted to - the GG died a couple months ago :( ).

I still use a Discman myself. Haven't gotten around to getting an MP3 player yet - after all, I'm usually late to the party. :p I still see people using portable CD players, and every now and then I'll see someone using a portable cassette player too.

* - I usually stick to my DS or GBA SP, but there have been a few times where I feel like doing something different, so I've played my GBC on the bus as well.

I remember in the mid-'90s when I took a flight to Arizona to visit my brother. I brought my Lynx along to have something to do on the flight, and it seemed like everyone was enviously staring at me. I was strangely hoping I might meet another Lynx player, so I brought a Comlynx cable with me. Nope, just a couple GameBoy players and me.

Funny thing... when I was going through airport security, they made me turn the Lynx on to see if it was real, and I can't recall what game I had in it, but the game's boot screen took a few seconds to show up. I swear it seemed like a half hour before something came up on screen. I felt like I was going to get beaten by the security guards if nothing came up, like they would think I was smuggling a bomb onboard.

Actually I've never really changed my look out of the 80s. O_o; I must look pretty bad, even though I think I look great! I don't feel too bad though, as I see a few people still living like it was the 70s and 80s around here. Hick country living at it's finest.

I wear big ass earphones in public which I think is way cool as well as having the extra benefit of keeping my ears nice and warm compared to those lousy ear plugs they use these days. It is hooked up to an ipod though, as I've broken way too many CD and tape walkmen. I'm fed up with that crappy portible tech. But I won't listen to anything modern on it. Almost nothing on it is past 1990 except for anime music.

I wear a blue jean jacket all the time and I'm finding it harder to get replacements over the years (nice quality ones and not the thin cheapo walmart ones). I managed to get one recently at a thrift shop in like new shape, so I'm good for another 5 years or so if I manage to treat it right.

I've an 80s rockstar mullet for at least 10 years now, but I've had one off and on for the longest time.

If it was not for stores stopping their selling of sporty socks with those colorful stripes on them, I'd still wear them. It's what I miss the most about 80s fashion as plain white stripe less socks have no class at all!

It was a big production for me to get a cell phone, as I thought they was so stupid and people are so annoyingly flashy with having them and overly rude by talking everywhere with them. Now I see people with these idiot looking cel phone like things hooked up into their ears at all times. Embrassing is that even the old people are doing it and I still have no real idea what they are or how they dial out on them. I'm assuming they are cell phones called bluetooth or something. Or perhaps they are portable radios...who knows...a true cell phone to me is something the size of a shoe box with a huge antenna sticking out of it. LOL!!

It took a lot of fighting for me to give up my overly large 80s eyeglasses into something that is modern. I still think the large glasses are way cooler than these tiny granny glasses are are in vogue these days. I've actually had one of those "fashion eyewear stylists" or whatever try to discourage me out of getting another pair of large lens glasses, but I still ended up with something so dorky and out of style, but in mid-size lens. LOL She was so disgusted with me for some reason. O_o!

Hell I'm pretty much the same way as I was 20 years ago and I don't really mind it. O_O; In fact a computer repair man had to go into my room to fix the computer and he said it looks like the 80s in there. LOL! 1000s of records and vintage video games would make anyone think that. I hate at least 70% of the the 90s and 00s, so I'm pretty much stuck in time.

Anyway, video game related, about 5 years ago or so I actually brought my Neo Geo Pocket to the airport and was playing Card Fighters 2 on it while waiting for my plane. The airport people had no idea what it was as everyone was into GBAs at the time and they actually had me turn it on for them as they thought it was some sort of bomb or something. >.<!!! LOL

This EXACT situation happened to me at LAX around the same time as I was heading home from E3. How someone can't recognize a handheld at this point, given how prevalent they are, is beyond me. Then again, an entire city's government mistook Aqua Teen promotional light-brites for bombs, so compared to that I suppose it's totally reasonable.

bah to all of you, if you really want to get noticed all you have to do is find a simple backpack with a single compartment. Make sure it's large. A second smaller compartment will be also good.

you also need the following
-1 older model portable tv that allows you to put on adapters for RF connection
-1 Game Gear battery (YES!) or Genesis power cord for model 2 (or both)
-1 model 2 genesis (uses less power)

What you do is cut a hole for the genesis cart port and the genesis's heat ducts. Also cut holes for the TV to get some ventilation. Put in the Genesis 2 with double stick tape as well as the tv at the opening of the bag.

I've done this once.

I took it to school and played it during lunch and during the practice ACTs.. They got mad at me.. I don't know why...

Depending on the Game Gear battery you might be looking at 30 minutes of gameplay.

Cosmic - read back some of the quotes in your post and realise what a dick you sound. I'm sorry but I have such a dislike for people that come accross like you did in your post. It's not the fact that you might have money, but the fact that you had to tell us all about it. Name dropping the labels you wear, ur made-to-measure suits, ur mac book - oh how we all look up to you.. how successfull you are... blar, blar

And then you dismiss someone looking at you strange for using an old handheld because - get this - your cufflinks are worth more then his whole outfit! you dick! so what???

Then you carry on boring us by knocking his 'cheap-ass suit' and how you look like a fashion model!!! stick to the point of your post.

I don't normally get angry on this forum but honestly, people who show off and look down at others for their lack of wealth, bad dress etc, grip my shit - and cosmic, you did do that, wether you were aware of it or not.

and one last thing, you think you're a bit handy, but come to London, put me down for my 'cheap ass suit' and i'd be the one putting you through the side of the tube son.

Someone once told me - people who like to talk and show their money don't normally have quite as much as they'd like you to think they do!

I once saw a guy playing a Gameboy Color on the train, but that's the oldest I've seen. Come to think of it, I rarely see anybody playing games on my commute anymore. I used to see people with PSPs or DSs back when they came out, but not recently.

I usually bring my GBA SP on the train, but sometimes I bring a NGPC or that Coleco 20-in-1 SMS handheld. Nobody gives it a second look as far as I know, but they're a lot more normal looking than a Game Gear. I'd love to bring my Turbo Express on the train, but I don't like carrying anything too large to fit in my pocket. Plus I take the train into Washington DC, and the security officers might think it's a bomb or something.

The most convienent handheld I own is probably my SP. Not old, doesn't stand out in a crowd. Althought the giant grey original gameboy cart sticking out of the back raises a few eyebrows occasionaly. If I had a new battery pak I'd like to try out my Nomad in public. Or maybe just take a crapload of rechargable AAs.

Actually I've never really changed my look out of the 80s. O_o; I must look pretty bad, even though I think I look great! I don't feel too bad though, as I see a few people still living like it was the 70s and 80s around here. Hick country living at it's finest.

Awesome! Who cares what other people think of your looks as long as you like it? :) I've seen some women dressing up like they are stuck in the 70s (They have 70s style afros)

Come to think of it, I go for months without getting haircuts.. As of now, It has been 4 months and a week since I had a haircut! I'm going to a haircut later today, though.

Well then.. I might have to take my PSP if I ever go on a train or airplane. But I can still dress up as if it were the 80s, And If I can track down a microvision it'll rock even more! :D

maybe he was poor, did you ever think of that

He couldn't be poor because there would be NO WAY he could afford the batteries for that thing.

I occasionally hook up my Game Gear at home, plugged into the wall, but the only handheld I take on the road these days is the SP. I have yet to upgrade to a DS or a PSP, though the Star Wars PSP is tempting.

Guys, I only occasionally go to Atlanta, but, I was there earlier in the week, and to my astonishment, I think I saw this same guy on the MARTA...

I could not believe my eyes...small world.

I think you all were right about him being poor though. Well, I don't know for sure, but he only had about 8 bucks in his wallet.

Shame....at least I got a Game Gear out of it.

Reminds me of last week when I was walking around with my portable record player, playing my MicroVision.
