today at the thrift store I found a Battletoads vhs which from what I understand contains the first and only? episode of the cartoon that ever aired.
I assume this was never released on dvd or pretty much anywhere, I have the ability to transfer it to dvd and naturally distribute it from there. would people be interested in seeing it (assuming its still in watchable quality)

FUCK YEAH.
Also, this video got dubbed to Spanish and it was usually broadcast in Mexico, during the holidays, when I was in high school, heh.

Everyone on the internet seems to agree. I only remember seeing one episode so it was probably a pilot to see how well it did.

I remember it being on, but even I couldnt confirm if there was only one. I remember it, and then it was gone just as quick so. Watched it at my Grandpas, I remember the exact moment hah

they planned a whole slew of things for the battletoads from action figures to just about everything you could imagine.
I'll post some pics later

I totally don't remember this show. I really, really hate Battletoads, but then again, that might make it more interesting to watch.

I could have sworn that there was more than one episode made. Here in Australia anyway.

I remember watching that on TV a couple times as a kid. IIRC, it aired sometime around the holidays and another cartoon I can't remember was aired before or after it.
I remember it being a pretty decent cartoon - no TMNT but no Biker Mice From Mars either. I'm kind of surprised that it didn't get a run of at least 10-20 episodes.

I was unaware of a show. I guess they showed that show to the people who pick shows, and based on the strength of that show, decided not to make any more shows.
I'd dig a digitally-distributed copy of it, yessir.

Under episodes it says (1x30"). Does that mean 1 or 30?

It means one thirty minute episode. Other shows have a larger amount. (Sonic has 65x30", for example.)

I wouldn't mind getting ahold of a copy of this as well. Has this ever shown up on Ebay? The only thing like this I've found was a Mario christmas VHS at goodwill.

The whole thing's up at this site.

And yes, it's terrible. So is the one-shot Bubsy cartoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F97am9_N2I), for that matter.
When it comes to obscure cartoons based on games, I'd really like to find out more about the Bionic Commando series that was apparently (http://members.fortunecity.com/kevinkeene/messages/4541.html) in the works around 2000. It had an IMDB listing several years ago, but that's since been deleted.

Maybe the TV executives kept trying to watch it, but they could never get past the speed bike scene, so they kept restarting it from the beginning and never managed to find out what the end looked like. :p

Does that mean that the end is better? There seems to be the overwhelming impression that it sucks. I'm still interested in seeing it though...when I'm not at work.

I just watched this and couldn't help but notice the name of the writer is David Wise, I wonder if it is the same David Wise who does the music for a lot of Rare's games.

All that marketing plans just look to me like they had the words 'Ninja Turtle' crossed out and the word 'Battletoad' written above it in crayon.

I actually still have my VHS tape of the Battletoads cartoon which I bought at Wal-Mart when I was ten years old. I've since lost the box but the tape still plays.
Honestly, the show isn't THAT bad. Honestly, sometimes when I hear people criticizing Battletoads, I want to ask "Umm, did you ever see any of DIC's cartoons that DID get picked up for a regular series? Like, you know... Wish Kid? Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog? (For that matter, Sonic Underground)? Captain N? The almost endless Mario cartoons? And so on and so forth until the end of time?"
Not saying 'Toads was great by any means--it was DIC after all and DIC is phenomenally incapable of making good cartoons (with the exceptions of COPS, Legend of Zelda, The Littles, New Archies, and Inspector Gadget), but it gets a worse rap than it really deserves.
... Anyway, someone asked where the story that the 'Toads were originally humans came from. Now, I'm not exactly up on Toad-lore myself, however I do have this dandy little book called "Battletoads: the Ultimate Battlebook" (I believe this was published by Prima) which posits yet another "the Battletoads were once human" story... though in their version, the 'Toads were kids who got sucked into a video game that they were beta-testing and became toads in transit.

Why, it's like the plot of "Game Master" from the Action 52!

THAT story first showed up on Nintendo Power. Remember when it used to include comic strips? I have that issue, and it shows the three Toads, Silas Volkmire, and the Dark Queen. Really neat stuff for the time, and a lot cooler looking than... this.

Here is the original concept for the series. Looks like the Battletoads started out just as virtual alter-egos of three programmers.
