More of a philosophical question, really. I finally found and purchased a copy of the Japanese only Xbox game Natural Ultimate Digital Experiment (N.U.D.E.). Not only did i find a copy, but the limited edition to boot.
When i bought it, it was listed as used. Turns out it's new, factory sealed, and still has the original price tags on it.
Here's where the problem lies. There's not much info on this game out there, especially the limited edition, and certainly nothing in english. I was planning to crack the bugger open, take some pics and post the info online.
Considering it's a rare limited edition sealed import from a console that sold like crap, i have a feeling it's going to end up being worth a pretty penny down the line. I'd just crack it open, take some pics and toss it on a shelf just so people could oogle the shots for 10 seconds before clicking the next link.
So here's my question, would you crack it open?
I'm going to do it regardless, 'cause thats the whole reason i bought it. This is just the first time i've ever hesitated before opening up a game, i thought i'd throw the question out there.

I would open it. If I were lucky enough to find two, I'd keep the best looking copy on a shelf and play the other one. Games are made to be played, so I couldn't help but open that sucker up.
How does one go about playing a Japanese only Xbox game? I don't know anything about modchips and I'm not too likely to install one in mine, so is there a software-only mod someone could do? And how many games are Japanese only?

Well, there's that game, and there's that game where you're the president of the USA and a mech pilot, and you blow up the white house.
Wonder why that game never made it to the US.

Wasn't Metal Wold Chaos a hidden bonus in one of the OXM discs? Or at least a demo version of the game? I never got around to playing it but I hear it's pretty good.
As far as NUDE goes though, I'd just leave it sealed. Even if you do have a modded Xbox to play it with, you'd still need to be able to speak Japanese.
What does the LE packaging look like though? Does it look just like a regular Xbox game, or does it come in a bigger box with a bunch of extras inside?

I'm a firm believer that games are actual games first, and collectors items second, if at all. I'd crack that baby open, myself.

If you can pilot a mech, be a President who knows a martial arts, *and* fight ninjas in the White House (before it blows up) then it would be awesome.

I would personally open the thing. Only to check the contents inside. I know there is a BIG argument about sealed games.. and I can understand why one would want to collect something like that- but I'd do it to verify the contents. I've been paranoid about that ever since I've bought a DVD that was missing one of the discs. And some of those XBOX seals can be lifted off and reapplied. But of course, if you can get your hands on another copy then I'd keep that one sealed. I guess another reason people keep rare games sealed is so they aren't liable for the contents- if they are scratched and damaged (which doesn't happen that infrequently). Only if you plan to keep it as an investment, should you keep it sealed. Then there is that thing about it being all in japanese. If I were purchasing a rare or vintage game- I would personaly buy an opened copy that I can veryify the contents and condition of, and possibly test.

No one was willing to publish it. From Software shopped it around, but everyone turned them down...hell, Sega almost laughed them out of the office. The game was a lot of fun (moreso than Otogi, in my opinion) and funny as hell. It's expensive as fuck now a days, too (>$200).
You can play it pretty easily with a softmodded Xbox. All it takes is Mechassault, Splinter Cell, or Agent Under Fire and an exploited save game that's super simple to download and load up with an Action Replay Max. Hell, if you buy the Action Replay, the included software allows you to download saves from their server. On their server are saves other people have uploaded, including the exploited saves needed to perform the softmod, so you don't even have to do any crazy hunting around the internet looking for them.

Yeah I soft-modded mine a while back- which was kinda a waste, considering I only play regular xbox games on it and nothing else. But you can play almost any game and al you need is an Action Replay. I believe mine can play games from other regions... wow I never thought about that until now. But is there much to import that's any good? If you do play this game you should post about it, ProgrammingAce.

I would go ahead and open it. While I collect sealed games, I can't imagine a game that is literally impossible to play unless you are fluent in conversational Japanese being worth much anywhere but Japan.

Metal Wolf Chaos is the money...other than that, Shikigami no Shiro Red/Blue if you're apeshit into the series. Can't really think of much else worth importing from Japan on the system that hasn't made it over already.
You do have access to the PAL library as well, assuming you find some euro-only games that pique your interest (Racing Evoluzione, Mashed and Mashed: Fully Loaded, etc)
Something you might want to look into is upgrading your hard drive and installing games to it. It's even more convenient than throwing a hard drive in a PS2 since you can easily reboot the system with the controller and pick another game, all without getting off your ass. Decreased load times are a nice plus, too.

Well the soft modding itself gave me a bit of trouble... and I've checked into putting another hard drive in... but I understand that requires a bit of formatting and plugging and unplugging HDs... and considering we now only have dial-up and we're gonna be moving to FAP regulated Wild Blue internet- I need to do more research to see if I feel like fucking with it (and it's worth the pain). If I reember correctly you need a PC with an expansion slot for the formatting- which is another strike- as our only PC's are a mac mini- and a dell laptop. Oh and I apologize to the OP for getting a little OT.

I just downloaded a pretty decent shooter last week, Psyvariar 2 (Extended Edition). Not the best I've ever played but if you're into Cave shooters, you'd probably dig it.
Another JPN exclusive I liked was Flight Academy. It's a straight-forward commercial jet sim kinda like the Jet DeGo! Series. It's entirely in Japanese though, so I don't know what I'm doing half the time. I'm a big flight sim fan though, so I guess I'm biased towards these types of games.
The only PAL exclusive I've played beside the Dancing Stage tiles is Tour De France. It's kinda shitty but I had to play it anyway just because the concept of a game based on the race sounded too interesting to ignore. Plus it's made by Konami.

hahaha I went overboard hunting for that...2 sealed copies, 1 used copy and the soundtrack that was a pre-order gift.
totally worth it.

Man-tits or GTFO! lmao
I'd open it. How else are you gonna play it? The joy of a find like that is enjoying the experience. Not sure what NUDE entails, though I assume, it contains nudity. So I'd ogle some polygonal breasts for a few minutes and shelf it. Cause any game, in my experience, that relies on such things are pretty bad. I may even sell it afterwards, but I could always say I found it, bought it and played it.

There's a Japanese-Only xbox sequel to Wreckless called Double S.T.E.A.L. I think, oddly it has full english menus and voices if your xbox is set to english. Assume it was meant to come over and never did.
I tried playing a copy of NUDE once...my VERY limited Japanese wasn't even enough to get out of the first room I don't think. Interesting game though, just sucks that I can't play it. And yes, I would totally open it and document if nobody else has.

If you can get >$200 for MWC, let me know, i'll sell one of mine. I don't think i've seen it for over $100, and usually alot closer to $50.
Now the Japanese version of Fatal Frame II, that's a title that can push $200.

I have double steal and yeah practically everything short of menus is in english. It's as fun as wreckless and it has a free roaming mode, which was a nice touch.
