It is very small at this point, they got plans to grow it. Here is the link to the article to Ign's plans with that channel: http://retro.ign.com/articles/845/845079p1.html

Oh no. Oh god. I can only see this going down a very bad road.

If they start reviewing games with the same mindset... comparing them to modern games... I fear they'll be handing out 1s by the boatload.

I'd almost bet money that the photo of the Coleco table top arcades is from someone's collection on here. I swear I've seen that somewhere before.

Another site of "Every game is better on the SNES" plus mediocre reviews?

Awesome!

They was right on about the last battle game. It was 50 bucks and I was throughly dissapointed. I was so blessed that the manager let me return it for ghouls and ghost.
The game was just very limited.

I wonder if this is because other sites, such as Eurogamer, just made a new retro section too...?

Super Mario Bros is an okay game, but with no online multiplayer, an unadjustable camera and absolutely no unlockable Achievements, along with the fact there is no voice acting, we believe this game to be an epic FAIL.

Yeah, I bet we are going to need to be dilligent about that with IGN. They are definitely going to steal images from sites like DP.

I can definitely see alot of bad reviews....alot of times I will see them re-review a classic and be like ..back then 9.0 9.5 10 9.5 and now 5.0 4.0 6.0 5.5 - I've seen so many websites re-review classics and dis them because "the graphics didnt age well" .......HELLO MCFLY! duh... when retro games get compared to modern - it will usually not turn out well...and I hope the IGN retro site doesnt turn into a load of bad reviews

Happens all the time from everywhere. In most instances if they're original pictures I request credit at the very least - I deserve it if it's my picture. Sometimes I dislike where / how it's being hosted enough to nag endlessly about it. Sometimes I figure "what the hell" and let it pass, here for instance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Virtua_Processor). That's my picture of an exposed Virtua Racing cartridge, grabbed from my site without any contact to me. Since I haven't seen another picture of it and it helped with the entry it's okay with me. Still is strange to see your stuff appear elsewhere.

It looks like they're repackaging a lot of the content that's already on the site (ie Virtual Console reviews). I don't have a problem with it. Obviously I'm in the minority here but I like ign. Plus you gotta like the banner!

Yep, plus I'm sure they have tons of archive material to draw from, so it probably isn't that much work to maintain.

I don't see anything retro there.
All the news from january are about PSP, PS3, Wireless(?) and X-Box360. Plus some editorial. Lol.

I thought about going off on a rant about "stealing" screenshots, but I figure I'm in the minority that thinks its retarded to claim a screen grab that cointains intellectual property you own exactly zero percent of, taken using a ROM that puts you in dubious legal standing anyway.

Actual photos of things on the other hand...

Their Last battle and Black belt reviews is something retro. You could click on the picture of the two games on that page.

The sega Genesis and the Sega Master system have been discontinued for a very time terms of developing new games that aren't homebrew.

I mentioned Ign did have much up yet for their retro channel.

The reviews on IGN's retro site include Game Boy Advance games, GameCube games, and Xbox games, including Madden NFL 08 and Ratatouille! Those are retro already?

I understand the initial skepticism, but I think the idea of a mainstream site doing retro reviews is kind of cool.

BTW: Last Battle did suck. Buying that game for full price (with my '89 Christmas money) was one of the worst game-buying decisions I ever made as a kid. Fail.

They are not retro, but they are on systems that don't have any games out this year. They put the reviews there because they wanted to fill it up with game reviews that were reviewed at least 5 months prior the channel being launched.

It appeared like a rush job for stuff on the site for linking up reviews.

Thank god they reviewed Black Belt for the Sega Master System, I really needed to know what the trusted editorial staff of IGN thought of this legacy Sega title that is not currently available for purchase on any format. Thank you, IGN.

I agree, it's when I take a picture of a tabletop or a cartridge or parts of a mod I'm doing or a T-shirt and then it's sucked up by another site with no credit given that I get irritated.

IGN has enough problems with what's current and they're going to try a hand at retro? Kitsune, you are right. Will not end well... at all. Maybe they'll list the emulator used to evaluate the game in the review. X_x

I guess I'm in the minority, but I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully they'll get Lucas Thomas to write some of the content. He's done a great job with the VC reviews. I've learnt a lot about the history of some games by reading them.

I know, but why? It's not like the site is dealing with hot new releases or time-sensitive scoops. The writers should've taken their time, written a bunch of reviews, and then launched the site properly. Black Belt? The Last Battle? That's it? Come on.

I am given the impression this was last minute decision to create a new channel for their 10th anniversy of IGN.com turning into a daily-updated, multiplatform destination. They screwed up by not putting much tought to it ahead of time.
