View Full Version : Easiest/Hardest Mega Man Game(s)

The easiest Mega Man game I can think of is Mega Man II on the original Game Boy. There's really nothing hard about the game at all. All the robot masters are easy to kill and even Wily is a pushover.
The hardest Mega Man game for me would the original Mega Man. Ice Man's stage still makes me nervous and the Rock Monster/Yellow Devil is still a thorn in my side. I'd like to beat him without the pause glitch but I think I may need year's of practice.
Mega Man & Bass is also hard mostly due to the bosses and the second King stage. I've heard the Super Famicom version is easier because things aren't shrunken down.

megaman 1 gutsmans stage was pretty hard with that tricky jumping puzzle right off the bat. that stage drove me crazy as a kid. id say on the easy side of the fence megaman 3 on nes, (yes thats right i think its easier than 2 so there!)

I found Mega Man 2 easier than 3, and while Megaman & Bass was tricky, the Wonderswan version was an absolute motherfucker. Take a difficult game and throw it on a system with a blurry screen so it's near impossible to see shots or moving enemies? Awesome job!
I've gotten further in Mega Man (though never beaten it) than I did in R&F for Wonderswan. Hell, even Megaman X6, in all of its cheap as fuck, poorly designed retardedness wasn't as difficult as that game.

I've found 3 the easiest, to me anyhow. I've found the 2nd trilogy (4-6) harder due to the 2 final castle setups.

Mega Man 7 (SNES) gets my vote. Wily's a push-over as are the 8 bosses.

Mega Man 2 was really difficult for me o_O
I didn't have much of a problem with the other ones, though.

Plays much better on a SwanCrystal.

MM7's final Wily is the hardest thing ever. Sometimes he's simply impossible because of the way the game works.

I'm going to jump in and agree that 2 was the easiest for me - when I bought the original megaman, I do remember it being the hardest game I bought at that time. Still I will agree its the hardest of the series.

Really? I found him super easy. I think I even perfected him, and trust me, I'm no Mega Man expert! I can't even beat MMX! Anyway, I think I used the spring coil on final Wily. One of his forms, anyhow. If you want, check out a youtube vid. You'll see his pattern is quite simple.

I used to find this easy. I had the patterns and timing memorized, so I could finish the stage in less than 5 minutes. Unfortunately, I haven't played the first in ages, so I've probably forgotten the timing.
Anyway, I think the easiest Mega Man game is Mega Man II for Game Boy. The only thing I had problems with is Crash Man (Other than him, everything else was easy).
The absolute hardest is Mega Man 5, with a lot of tricky jumping puzzles that make Gutsman's stage in the first look tame.

I wouldn't doubt it. If I ever attempt to play the game again, it'll be via emulation, though.
I gave Makaimura another try via emulation after years of only being able to make it halfway through the game and found it to be a completely breeze in comparison. Well, other than the emulator not supporting screen rotating. That part about the wonderswan was pretty bad ass.

I think the original six actually form a mountain. 1 is easier than 2 (normal or difficult) which is easier than 3. I think 3 is the hardest and then 4 gets easier then 5 is easier from there. I think 6 is the easiest of the entire series. And note that I love me my Mega Man so I'm going into this head first.
7 is harder than 6 but not as hard as 3. It falls somewhere in there.
Mega Man 8 is a pushover.
Mega Man & Bass I find to be the hardest in the entire Mega Man universe.
The Gameboy ones are hard for me to judge as I've only played them all once but I remember that none of them were particularly harder than the NES games.
Mega Man: Wily Wars was a pain because of the 2 shot limit. It really makes a difference.
Mega Man Battle and Chase is total garbage and I didn't bother playing enough to even decide how hard it is.
Mega Man Power Battles and Power Fighters are both pretty easy.
Super Adventure Rockman can't really be judged as it's one of those trial and error FMV games.
Mega Man Soccer is pretty easy until you get to Dr. Wily. Then you tend to lose...a lot.
Mega Man Powered Up is overall easier than the original Mega Man but I die more often because it takes time getting used to the new "feel" of the game.
If you want to go into Mega Man X then:
X1 is easy enough with the exception of the last Sigma. He could be a pain.
X2 is the easiest game in the entire Mega Man universe. Doesn't stop it from being one of my favorites of all time, though.
X3 can be hard if only because of some less than predictable enemy patterns. But some bosses are still a joke.
X4 is almost as easy as X2 and just about as awesome.
X5 is where it gets a little hard to tell since they started using difficulty settings. On the easiest setting it can be a joke. On the hardest it can be rough.
X6 is like X5 where on easy it's a joke but on hard it's a nightmare.
X7 is very hard but only because most of the time you can't see what you're doing or where you're going.
X8 is much easier than the last few but harder than X2 and X4. It's also awesome.
Mega Man Xtreme and Xtreme 2 are both easy enough.
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is harder than the original X in some ways and easier in others. It varies.
In general the X series is easier than the original series.
I only played through Mega Man Legends and Legends 2 once each but I remember them both being pretty moderate.
Never touched the Battle Network stuff so can't comment.

I think what makes 3 easier is the fact that it was the first (and only time in the originial series) they included the energy tanks into the password system.

I think a big reason why a lot of people find Mega Man 2 easy is because it is without a doubt the most balanced of the series, retro or modern. Of all the games I think it's the most open ended as well with multiple ways to tackle parts of many levels. Or it's that I simply wish the Metal Blades were Mega Man's default weapon. LOL

I find #4 the easiest. One trick to getting lots of Energy Tanks is by refreshing Fliptop. If you grab his item, he goes away, and doesn't come back. If you avoid his item, and go back, he'll give you another item. You can repeat until you get something you like.
Hardest would be #1 for sure. I've beaten it a few times, but only because of the elec beam trick. Even with it, it doesn't guarantee victory every time.

2 has the charge up fire shot marking the first of megamans weapon charging and didnt return until 4 which i feel is a large part of why its viewed as being easy, that and.... oh yea its just not that hard lol. 3 had a number of things that made it easy in my mind including the above mentioned energy tank saving. the 3 rush modes especially the rush jet. though admittedly it does have some weak boss weapons, im looking at you top and snake man :(

The Arm Cannon didn't have a charging shot until Mega Man 3, if memory serves me right.

4 had the charge shot. Megaman 2 is the easiest to me, with Megaman 1,3,4 as the hardest.

One of the weapons in MM2 had charging, but it wasn't the default arm cannon. I think it was Heat Man's weapon.

The only time any MM game is ever really that difficult is when you beat the robot masters in the worst possible order, starting with the hardest (Elecman in 1, Quickman in 2, etc). That, or if you leave a really useful weapon/device until the end, like the Metal Blade or any jet-sled tool.

heatmans weapon was the first charging weapon in megaman 2 and then it wasnt until 4 where he had the normal arm cannon charge. I'm almost 100% on this one.

Quickman was pretty hard for me in 2 when I was younger since I didn't (and still don't) understand how the flash thing is supposed to kill quickman. I can stop time, but then what? Can't seem to shoot at him or change weapons until all the time runs out.

Mega Man 1 on GameBoy (Aka MegaMan in Wily's Revenge) imho was the hardest MM game.
Easiest? Mega Man 2

The flash stopper itself will make him lose energy, but not enough to defeat him with that alone. I tend to get a few shots in first... get him down somewhere between 2/3 and 1/2 health, then use the flash stopper.

Just running the flash alone (stopping time) will take away about half of Quickman's energy. Once the flash has run out, just switch back to your P-shooter and keep shooting Quickman non-stop till he dies. You will take a few shots in the process, but you will finish him off before he kills you.

I'm not sure about the ones after 3, but 2 definitely included the energy tanks, because the amount of energy tanks you have influences the rest of your password....I remember a chart from NP wayyyy back....
[this thread is likely long dead but I saw nobody else corrected, so I totally had to!]

Megaman 3's password system was easily manipulated. In Megaman 2 (and I am going to assume others), the password was totally different versus the amount of energy tanks you had. Megaman 3 simply used one ball to track your E tanks. The rest stayed the same. Whenever you get the chance, drop in 3 and put a single blue ball in A6. With nothing else set, it'll start you at the beginning with 9 E tanks.
That's what I believe he's referring to.
I found the first one on the nes to be the hardest and i agree that the second one seemed to be the easiest for me but the others were not without there own challeges

Exactly.
Want to start the game with no weapons and 9 ETs? No problem!
Want to start with [x] Robot masters defeated and 9 ETs? No problem!
Want to start with the Robot Masters defeated and [x] of the Dark Robots defeated with 9 tanks? No problem!
Want to start at Wily's with everything? No problem!

Just talking "original series" since I've played all 9.
I say #9 is the hardest for me (I still haven't actually completed a level yet), and #3 is the easiest (it is also my favorite, but I believe that was because it was my 1st)

Mega Man 2.
But I don't like playing the robot masters in the order that most "tip books" or FAQ's recommend.
Because there are items in Flash Man's stage that you can't reach without the Crash Bomber. So I always play through Crash Man before going to Flash Man's level.
Also there are at least a couple items (extra life and energy tank) in Metal Man's stage that can't be reached without the sled or "steps" bonus items. Pretty sure you have to beat both Flash Man and Air Man before you can grab all the extra items in Metal Man's level.
Being a completist, I like to grab every available energy tank or extra life.
Besides I don't know of any other Mega Man games aside from 2 that have so many "safe" spots in which you can wait out regenerating enemies without any fear of damage and pile up the extra lives that randomly fall. There are spots in Air Man's stage, Bubble Man and I believe Crash Man's level.

I just completed beating my first level in that game, the game is hard but the levels I find short. It is the hardest one Ive played aswell. Mega man 1 would be the second hardest but not really till you reach wily's castle.

I dunno about 'no fear of damage' but I always liked the drill bits in one part of Metal Man's stage best for farming extra lives, the only problem is you have to run around on a conveyor belt while doing it...Air Man and Crash Man have a few good spots to farm the little birds that pop out of dropped eggs, but that isn't very efficient until you have the Leaf Shield.

Other than the second one on Gameboy, the other ones felt a bit harder due to the sprite sizes and the stage layouts, things hit you hard and the games didn't drop many health items.

Here's how I rate the Mega Man games from hardest to least hardest (original series only). Now this is just based on my own personal experience with the games...I'm sure other people will disagree with me on the way I ranked these.
1. Mega Man 1
2. Mega Man 9
3. Mega Man 2
4. Mega Man & Bass (Rockman & Forte)
5. Mega Man 7
6. Mega Man 4
7. Mega Man 3
8. Mega Man 8
9. Mega Man 5
10. Mega Man 6

I have barely played Mega Man games before. I just got the Mega Man anniversary collection for the PS2 and I find the original NES titles to be ludicrously hard. Damned flying blue face helicopter things.
