View Full Version : Wow! PS2 d-pad sucks for 2D fighting games!

I just picked up the Fatal Fury Battle Archives on PS2 and trying to perform special moves with the PS2 d-pad is nearly impossible!

Do you know of other controllers for PS2 more suitable for 2D fighting games?

Well aside from the much lauded Hori sticks, there's always the Street Fighter Anniversary controllers from NubyTech. I own a couple, but I'm not too thrilled with them. They're fashioned after the Saturn controllers but the d-pad is just too stiff for my tastes.

In fact, I modded the one I own for the original Xbox to be a tad more sensitive.

I've heard many great things about the Saturn controller that was released for the PS2 a while back. If you can find one (it's gonna cost you), grab it! Aside from sticks, the Saturn controller is my absolute favorite for fighting games.

Dig around the used game stores for a cheap ascii stick. They shouldn't run you any more than $15 and they're a hell of a lot better than that sorry excuse for a pad that the PS1/2/3 has. Fucking blister inducing :(

Agreed. I've actually gotten used to using the left analog stick because of that.

I wouldn't be quite so fast to blame the PS2 D-Pad for the functionality of some of SNK/Playmore's recent release "special move" action.

While I find it relatively easy to pull off specials in KOF XI using just a D-Pad, Neo Geo Battle Coliseum is OUTRAGEOUSLY hard using either a D-Pad OR an ASCII Fighting Stick (I have and have tried both).

Also, tossing in any of the Capcom Classics Collections or Street Fighter Anthologies/Anniversaries, special moves flow like warm butter off the D-Pad.

And, while the D-Pads generally DO suck for 2D fighters, they're not as bad as the programming in some of SNK's latest releases would lead one to believe.

get the ASCII pads(same as released on Dreamcast), they are fantastic for 2-D fighters.

I will agree on a few things. PS2 controllers I feel are bad for most fighting games - I bought an arcade stick to avoid it but the Saturn controllers were by far the best normal controllers for 2D fighters. If you own a Dreamcast I'd suggest picking up the arcade stick as well, one of my smartest purchases

The Logitech wireless controller for the PS2 isn't so bad for fighters...I'm not really a marathon 2D fighter player but I've been cracking out on Capcom V SNK 2 recently with nary a blister in sight.

Ohh, thanks for the heads up on that. I've been eyeballing those controllers but I've been curious about how the dpad felt on them :)

Are the Logitech Wireless Xbox controllers of similar quality?

i think they are a decent jump in improvement although i dont like the positioning as its basically the same spot as an official controller

I really haven't had that much problems with the ps2 d-pad. After its broken in, its fine for me. Its just plain hard to pull off moves in the Neo-geo anthologies. There seems to be a delay in some of the commands.

Well I definitely feel like a doofus in Fatal Fury 2. I used to be quite good at it in the arcade and SNES.

The best i say the,PS2 Saturn controller or the Hori Arcade Pro 2 fighting stick.

For some reason I have troubles using sticks over D-Pads unless its on an arcade cab. Probably because I'm standing and the controllers won't move around anywhere because its built into the thing. I play all fighters using a d-pad whenever possible. I played Street Fighter 2 on XBLA with the 360 d-pad for quite some time.

I dug out a Mad Catz controller that has a decent d-pad and it seemed to work better.

Use the Nuby Street Fighter controllers for PS2. Don't use the Nuby SF controllers for Xbox. They suck.

I'm always tempted to buy a PS2 NeoGeo CD pad. They look so nice and will have a nice clicky stick i'm thinking. Although I wont buy one since I've barely touched my Dreamcast arcade stick since paying a lot of money for it

You gotta press the attack button while the last movement is being made. Not immediately after, like in Street Fighter II.

Wow. Habeeb's been banned. Who'da thunk it?

Anyway, has anyone heard anything good or bad about the Mayflash joystick? Play-Asia is selling them, fairly cheaply at that. I've heard moderately positive reviews so far and I'm damn tempted.

I have had no problems with the dpad for the ps2 it is great for me.
I rank the fighting pads like this

The original duke saturn pad
the saturn remodel
the Ps2
The dreamcast

The xbox/360 and gamecube are knucklebusters.

No matter what pad I used I could only do scorpions fatality in mortal combat.

Post has been editied and parties pm'd. Lets get this back on controller talk.

Of the current systems I can only really use the PS2 D-Pad. I can only play games like Tony Hawk with a PS controller. Besides the D-Pad is so screwed up for the 360 that I can't even do XBLA retro titles well with it most of the time. I don't even want to think about fighters with that thing. I'd be buying new controllers on a weekly basis.

For fps's and racing games I need an xbox/360 controller for the best control. For action/adventure/platforming games I prefer the dual shock. For fighting games I'd pick the dual shock over all other current controllers. However, the above mentioned Saturn pad is a nice alternative for PS2 fighting games. Or you could always get an arcade stick.

I hated to play d-pad only fighting games on the Playstation cause I hated that damn d-pad. When KOF XI had the analog option I was so happy.

The PS1/PS2 d-pads weren't always user friendly when it came to 2D fighters, but surely there have been worse controllers(on other systems) for 2D fighters.
