no it cannot. its ps3 games that lack region lock. ps1 and ps2 games have it intact. also, it is entirely possible that future ps3 releases will be region locked. i expect this to be true for very big releases.

That would have been cool if it were true. Then even I would have to go buy a PS3.

Agreed... Then I might have a chance at playing the PS2 Berzerk game.

The PS2 Berzerk game is amazing, much better than the version on dreamcast

Not to get this thread off topic but..... I LOVE the DC version! It's one of my favorite games (And the anime one of the best I have ever seen), even though I STILL have yet to beat Zodd :( I have seen Videos of the PS2 version and It certainly does look good. Maybe one day i'll get to play it...

I have a bunch of PS2 import games I'd love to play but I'm just not into the whole modding scene. Thats why I'm looking for a PS2 test system.

It would have also been cool if you could play import xbox games on the 360.

I have a ps3 American version, but sadly I have more import games than american. Sigh if only Sony would turn off the region locking

I never understood the point of region locking in the first place...I mean..wouldn't you think it would increase sales? They don't spend the extra money getting certain games put out in certain regions but still have people importing...makes sense to me...

It's just to bad there really isnt any good PS3 games worth importing....YET...

I've been arguing this very point for years. If companys don't bring over certain games we want, then obviously we are going to import them to play them. And as you said Dream--it would increase their sales. I actually don't mind importing, but if I was an rpg fan I would hate it.

it has to do with different companies having distribution rights.

That part of it is fairly obvious, but the other part is because of occasional "questionable" material. But the sad thing is, many titles fail to come over here simply for lack of finding a willing distributor. And that boys and girls is why we must import so much:-D

Not a very practical choice. I've got a ps2 test system, jap ps2 fatty, modded ps2 slim, jap 60 gig ps3 and a us 60 gig ps3.

The ps2 test systems aren't exactly the most common units to find/replace. My test system seems to be beginning to conk out by the way the motor sounds so I've retired it. I know you're "so against" modded systems but the most practical approach is to get a slim (they're dirt cheap now) and just have an experienced person mod it for you (also very cheap). Yeah it might not be so collectible to you because it's been tainted by a dirty mod, but it works (imports/burns/whatever), has advantages of a slim (test systems are fatties, have yet to see a test slim) and it's cheap/common to replace/obtain.

Playing ps2/ps1 games on a ps3 is alright. It does an ok job of upscaling and it removes the need to have yet another console hooked up. But I personally prefer to use my modded slim hooked up to an XRGB+, fed into an Audio Authority vga->component adapter then into a DVDO iScan HD when playing on an HDTV. It looks pretty darn good (much better than a PS3 imho) but still doesn't compare to RGB on something like a Sony PVM CRT.

And with a slim PS2, it's not even a matter a hard-modding, with Swap Magic discs, it's just as simple as keeping the lid open/closed button locked down!

Yup, a piece of tape or cardboard will do it for the swap. I think some swap discs even come with the little cardboard cut-out.

I have been looking into the swap magic disc as well, but I heard they are a soft mod job. Since the PS2 slim(which I own) has a flip top lid, you would think the process would be just as easy as swapping games on a PS1, Dreamcast or Gamecube. But apparently thats not the case:(

ModChipStore.com includes a little plastic cut-out with their swap discs.

I got'em both. The ps2's berserk game is far and away better imho. Also the graphics overall look better in the ps2 incarnation.
