It's gonna be tough to catch 5th Ghost now, but here's hoping I can have a good run tonight and grab a couple more patches and close the gap. WTG, Ghost! :)

Thanks!

Keep at it deteacher, even though I'm getting the hang of Space Shuttle, there's still a chance it may take me till Mar. 31 to get the Leader patch. Till this contest, I never played Space Shuttle. Just reading the manual gave me a headache!

If Todd Rogers or David Yancey were in the mix, it would have been over a long time ago I bet. :-)

LOL! Too true. Todd and Yancey ar

I, too, have never played SH. Oh, I'm not giving up yet. ;) I just know that you're getting practice in on SH while I'm :frustrated: with Grand Prix and Beamrider. ;)

We'll see how tonight goes. :)

One more patch to go!

I just looked through the manual to see about the mission grading, and it is very intimidating. No wonder I haven't played it yet.

Good luck deteacher! Even if you can't beat the 5th ghost, you've pretty much secured second place for yourself.

Right now I'm tied with InsaneDavid for 3rd, but I have to take a break from playing for a little bit so no new patches for me until probably Sunday night. I've only got 3 or 4 "easy" ones left anyway (i.e. I know I've earned the patches for those games before).

One thing I forgot to mention in my tips for Dragster...

When you are nearing the end and you think you are about to blow your engine, release the button and pull the joystick to the left (putting you in Neutral) and simply coast to the end!

So, still pushing for 2nd place, I just earned:

Beamrider: 49,662, Sector 17.

I plan on getting the !!!!!! for Laser Blast tomorrow. I'm locking myself in my bedroom and not coming out until I have that patch. Ugh...

Thanks guys!

Sure thing deteacher, and keep it up. !!!!!! on Laser Blast is a test of will and endurance. Ugh is right.

I actually dreaded trying to learn Space Shuttle, but was pleasantly surprized to find it a very engaging and addictive game. Before this contest it was always that game that I just looked at on the shelf and never imagined taking the time to figure it out. I'm glad I finally did. It really is a remarkable bit of programming for an Atari 2600 game. I feel ready to try out for NASA now! LOL

Private Eye was another game that I never played before, but knowing it was a Bob Whitehead game, I knew it would be excellent, and it is. Very unique game. Just another reason why Activision was in a class all their own.

In the meantime, I plan on posting more scores for the heck of it. I can max a few of these games, and now that the pressure is off, I can take the time to do it.

Only one for now. I wish I could have completed more, but Keystone Kapers is killing me.

Also, I think I caught some killer LCD lag on camera, also known as the reason I don't have the Kaboom! patch yet. I guess it could be the exposure time, but I would like to think it is LCD lag.

EDIT - I forgot to add: I got the Spider Fighter patch the first game after I flipped the left difficulty switch. I don't know what I had it set to, but one of them I couldn't break 15k points in, the other I could.

hmmm... I think I read about an exploit for this game where you can start the game at the higher difficulty, then switch to the lower and still get the point bonus of the higher difficulty. Is this maybe what happened?

Regarding Spider Fighter, the manual says if you flip the difficulty to a, the bonus points multiply. To be honest, I didn't see much of an increase in actual difficulty.

My trick for Spider Fighter was to try to stay in the same spot and fire as rapidly as possible. This pretty much creates a wall that anything flying across will be destroyed. Combine that with the 'a' difficulty, I got the patch pretty quickly.

Didn't get the chance to roll Laser Blast yesterday. I had to go watch my neice compete in a cheeleading competition yesterday. Hopefully I'll get the chance today.

I'm also going to start working on a map for Private Eye.

@ 5th Ghost: Why you rat bastard, you! It's not enough that you sweep all the patches in a relatively short amount of time, but now you go have to go and knock down my near-perfect Pitfall II high score for the sake of posting a perfect game? I'm already near the bottom here with respect to scoring, you know. So was it worth the time then to earn those extra 300 points solely to rip the remaining vestige of self-esteem I held in this contest from my aching, blistered hands?!

Kidding all around .

I was going to do something like this later if time allowed: try and go for a perfect game merely for the sake of posting one, and maybe I still will just so it's on record. But..eh...you got there first. Well done :hail: You've got game.

Ok, so I had the best intentions of maxing out Laser Blast this weekend, but I just couldn't bring myself to sitting down and doing it. But I figured this much out, just FYI for everyone: (keep in mind, these times are estimates. The fewer times you get shot, the faster you'll hit the following milestones.)

On level 2, it takes roughly 2 to 2.5 minutes to get 10,000. Therefore, it takes 20-25 minutes to score 100K. Multiply that by 10, and it will take you 200-250 minutes (or 3.5-4.5 hours) to roll it.

However, on game 4, it took me a little over 1 minute to get 10K. After working through the math, it should only take about 2 hours to roll it. My advice for you all is, if you're going to try to hit 1M, learn to play game 4!

After playing around with LB, I decided to work on a map for Private Eye. I'm hoping to have my Super Sleuth patch tonight. :)

I'll have to give that a shot on game 4, then. Your numbers sound right on the money. I was doing my own math while playing game 1 last night, and estimated approximately 3 seconds per sortie and 3 seconds to travel to the next sortie, which worked out to ~5 minutes per 10000 points, 50 minutes for 100000. Suffice to say it was pretty grueling work.

As far as skiing goes, we should pay close attention to the difficulty switches (Pantech, maybe that's why you have been having so much trouble). Twin Galaxies "BB" best time is 27.510, and the "AA" best time is 28.70. I think the manual says it's the right switch that controls the difficulty.

Yes, the left dif. keeps the skier centered on the screen, while the right dif. switch adds more trees in your way, or vice versa.

There's also a glitch in the game involving the difficulty switch...by toggling the switch, you can center your skier on the screen mid-run, to save time moving left or right.

Of course, exploiting this would be cheating, but it is a well known fact about the game.

Glad you said it first. Now I know I'm not a crazy man.

Yeah, I realized a couple of days ago that difficulty switches make a huge difference in this game, affecting both difficulty and shape of the course. Then I broke down and read the manual (innovative, no?) and confirmed it. Hopefully switching to B-B will put me in Patch City sometime in the next couple of days.

My right difficulty switch is actually broken so it is always set to A. I didn't think it would have an impact (for example, in Spider Fighter I actually prefer non-guided shots) but I guess I was wrong. I'll probably still give it a few tries but if I can't pull it off I can always try emulation.

Stampede: 36,285

Here's how the scoring is read in Stampede...

The score at the top rolls every 10K. At 10K, a small blue steer head appears next to the Activision logo at the bottom, at 20K it changes to a 2, then at 30K to a 3 and so on.

Unfortunately, due to a stange glitch in the game, at around the 35K mark, the game becomes virtually impossible to continue any further, as the cattle will no longer allow themselves to be herded forward.

It plays very similarly to Robot Tank. At least on the Ensign level I was able to kill the enemies without taking a major hit and without needing to dock at a starbase. I'm assuming that on higher levels you have to dock at least once or twice to complete the board.

From the manual...

When your mission is over, the top line of MACC will display an evaluation of
your performance next to the game level indicator. You must call up the
Galactic Chart to review your performance.

Your score is determined by how efficiently you complete your mission. You are
awarded 100 points for each enemy starfighter you destroy. You are penalized:

500 points for each starbase destroyed by the enemy.
100 points for each time you dock for refueling and repairs.
1 point for each Stardate elapsed.

These bonus or penalty points are added to or deducted from a base score set at
the beginning of each mission, as follows:

Game Level | Base Score
----------------------------|---------------------------
Ensign | 3100
Leader | 4300
Wing Commander | 5700
StarMaster | 6900

Example: At Leader level, you destroy all enemy fighters (17) in 83 stardates,
docking once and losing one starbase. Your Score:

Bonus Score 4300
Credit for Enemy Destroyed +1700
Deduct for Stardates - 83
Deduct for Docking - 100
Deduct for Lose of Starbase - 500
------
FINAL SCORE 5317

The maximum score for each game level is as follows:

Game Level | Maximum Score
----------------------------|---------------------------
Ensign | 4000
Leader | 6000
Wing Commander | 8000
StarMaster | 10000

Stampede was just practice for me, learning what did and didn't work. I realized I was just getting greedy and if I took my time I could do better, just getting points at a slower pace.

For Tennis, the game is officially over when you or the computer makes it to 6 games and is ahead by two. If you are at 6-6, it rolls to zero and keeps going until someone is ahead by two games. Gameplay stops once it is over.

Finally got Stampede out of the way, great game but man, was it kicking by butte for a while

And finally spent forever doing Tennis, pretty easy and boring as well.

Now to keep going for more.

Hey, Keir...there's a little payback for ya. ;)Ooooh, good score. I have to work on getting some more patches to keep my 3rd place position, so I'll let you have that high score...

Ok, here it is:

Laser Blast: !!!!!!

Here are some stats for you all. Except for the first 24 tanks you destroy, you score 90 points per tank. To roll the score, you must destroy (ready for this...) a whopping 11,123 tanks! 3 at a time...

Now, if you'll excuse me...I'm going to go shoot myself.

No, I haven't gotten the commander patch yet...in fact, I'm not even close yet, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I can get into orbit and I can get lined up to chase down the satellite, but I haven't been able to dock with it yet. I'm going to approach it as if I only have to dock once and return. If I can get the hang of everything I need to do, first, hopefully I can work on completing this thing. The quick reference guide does help quite a bit, though.

Does anyone have tips for Decathlon and Starmaster? They are two of four games that I have left that I don't think I can do. I'm saving Kaboom and Laser Blast for another time. I also have 7 or so more games I don't have on the way :D

As far as decathlon goes, you just need a good sturdy stick. My CX-40 just wasn't cutting it because it's kind of worn out, so I pulled out my trusty slik-stik and that did the trik...I mean trick. :)

I tried decathlon in emu (thinking that I could pound on my keys like arcade track and field) and that didn't work at all. I suppose I could have tried my X-Arcade with the emu. Maybe I'll give that a shot and see how that goes (after I get my last 2 patches for Space Shuttle, that is.) :)

I received about 6 more Activision games I needed in the mail today, so expect more scores from me tonight.

I still need some more though and figured I'd see if anyone here had extras they would sell or trade. If you have any of these, I am sure we can work something out for them:

Beamrider
Cosmic Commuter
Crackpots
Double Dragon
Kung Fu Master
Pitfall II: Lost Caverns
Private Eye
Rampage

Naturally, the ones with patches are a priority.

Cool. I actually just traded for a Slik Stik and I should be getting it in the mail soon. I also just got a couple Gemsticks, I'll try those first. :-)

What happens if you're at 6-5 and you win the next game? 7-5 and you win? Or does it roll over?
