This happened to my friend's 360. It doesn't mess up your disks, but your 360's disk drive is crapping out. Your 360 will die a slow and painful death. Eventually it will stop reading disks altogether. That's when you send it back to M$. ;)

time to induce some RRoD.. quick, before the drive dies!

Microsoft will cover this right? A warrant is for everything, i hope....

This should clear up your warranty questions http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/resources/warrantyfaq.htm
Basically, you have 1 year from date of purchase for any repairs, (unless damaged by you) and 3 years for the RROD

Yes. Even if you bought a launch console, you're covered until, at least November.
And MS needs to find a new drive manufacturer. I now believe the DVD drive as one of the main culprits behind all these RRoD's.

I made a similar thread in Technical and Restoration a few months back.
Apparently, it's a buildup of dust on the disc spindle.
It's not harmful to the disc, and only causes the slippage/screeching noise on spin-down, however RyanMurf (who does a lot of 360 repairs) speculates that it could likely get so bad that you'll get disc read errors mid-game.
I'm pretty sure the system will need to be opened to have the spindle cleaned, so find somebody who knows what they're doing if you can't do it yourself.

Mine has also just started doing this but I bought the 3 year warranty so I'm not too concerned.

My 360 was replaced due to rrd and my dvd drive door would only eject sometimes. I am waiting for the box to return the system that was under warranty.

From my experience in repairing some 360's, it is either dust on the spindle, or the rubber pad no longer having "grip".
See, when a drive stops a disc from spinning like a brake, it actually reverses the motor. If the spindle slips, imagine a car tire hydroplaning on a wet ground. The spindle is moving faster than the disc itself.
Btw, RRoD in my experience, is cold solder joints, due to the lead-free solder, and cracking from the heat. I've never found which chip exactly, but it's either GPU or CPU it seems.

X-Clamp on the CPU putting enough pressure on the solder pads to break them off the mobo when the console warms up. At least, that's the short version.

Yup this is exactly what happens. It is not really anything to worry about until you get a disc read error. In that case you just replace the spindle or clean your xbox.

A couple weeks ago I began getting this horrible noise too. Shortly after, one of my games stopped working. I have no warranty, so I'll check that spindle. I had no idea. Thanks guys!

Who's the manufacturer of the drive? So I know who NOT to buy from. :p

Mine looks like a Samsung, judging from this:

ADD: My tray also has difficulty opening from time to time.

Odd. The samsung drives on the original xbox's were great...

You guys were correct. I cleaned the spindle, no more screech. Also, I cleaned the laser for good measure. Still got a read error though on that one game. My friend says that the 360 Samsungs are more prone to failure. I kinda believe him because it seems like it's breaking down.

How did you clean the spindle, can i just open the tray and spray some air in there or would that not do anything or make it worse? Dont really wanna open the whole thing up cause *warranty* bizz any help is appreciated..

Nah, you can't just go a sprayin'. The dust is stuck to the rubber of the spindle. I had to wipe it off after opening the Xbox AND the drive itself. Doing so will void your warranty. In my case, the dust wasn't causing anything serious, but my warranty is gone and I was annoyed so I went for it.

So, if the dvd drive breaks, and you then intentionally induce the Ring of Death, will Microsoft repair both problems for free?
I hate RoHS.

yes they will. They have to send you a 100% working xbox back if it gets sent in under hardware failure "3 red lights". They dont even bother fixing these anymore since you really cant efficiently so they will probably send you a new one.

I also recently cleaned mine.
Opening the 360 wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. The hardest part was getting the tabs on the plastic to all "release" simultaneously.
The interior of the 360 is much simpler than I expected ... I'd compare it to the simplicity of the hardware layout of the Playstation 1...and the DVD drive is also pretty idiot proof to open up and get back together.
Once the dust was off the spindle, the screeching completely subsided ... and both of our systems now likely have added operating life.
