Picked up the demo at Gamestop today ...

since the demo is short (about 15 minutes worth of gameplay), I'll make my review as brief as possible.

I put off playing through the first God of War game until it was a "Greatest Hits" title, which while a good move financially for a gamer as prolific and frugal as I am, was also a big mistake for one who likes fun action / platformers as much as I do.

I didn't wait on God of War II and I'm glad for that.

If the demo is any indication of what's in store for the whole game experience the PSP game looks to have all of the superbly high production values and ultra tight play control of the first two games in the series.

Even the "evade" control which any G.O.W. player will tell you is integral to completing the game and it's "bonus" tasks frustration-free is BRILLIANTLY re-mapped from the 2nd analog stick to simply holding both L and R. It works absolutely perfectly, and didn't take more than a few seconds to adapt to.

I was glad to see a CGI segment in there with a voice-over from Terrence Carson (Kratos) as it's usually in "portable" projects like this that companies think that they can (or are forced to) leave out voice-overs. So, I'm sure we'll get a nice meaty story full of great cut scenes and voice-overs from all the principal voice-talent from the series.

I'm HUGELY impressed with this one, I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn't playing in on a PS2, and if PSP hasn't had a system seller yet in the US (IMO it's had plenty ... but, there always seem to be critics that will ignore any and all successes when it comes to PSP.) this has GOT to be it.

They should have the demo UMDs at your local Gamestop now, so go reserve a copy and see if they'll give you one!!

This is one of the few games that might actually work well around the limited PSP "single analog" design. The lack of 2 analog sticks has killed just about every 3-D action game on the platform. Since the camera in the God of War games is always fixed, the control should be identical to its PS2 brothers. I'm looking forward to this one.

Great point.

Fixed camera works great in this series in general, and even moreso on PSP. It sucks that we have to wait till March for this one!!

Both my wife and I are huge fans of the God of War games. We have played through each game well over 10+ times each. We currently do not have a PSP. The PSP game sounds great, but is this game worth getting a PSP in your opinion?

Brian

Got mine back in September I think. Signed up as soon as I heard about it. Unfortunately, I'm waiting to get one of the new slim models to try it out since my old one is for homebrew only.

Well, if you have a TV that can support 720p, I'd say that this game is a great "window in" to the PSP library.

By that I mean, if you've actually gone through the G.O.W. games 10 PLUS times each, picking up a slim PSP with the component output cables would allow for you to play it on your TV just like you were going through another installment on your PS2, as well as take it with you on the go.

And if PS2 quality action-platformers are your thing, you'll find more than a few gems on the PSP in (but not limited to) Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Syphon Filter, and others.

It's tough to really call any one game a reason to invest in a whole system, but if you're going through the God of War series 10+ times, this sounds like a no-brainer. No?

I'm willing to bet that it gets a PS2 port, ala the GTA PSP games, sometime down the road. I never got my demo either and I know of others who have a while ago. I'm guessing that if you haven't got it by now you may not ever got a demo from Sony.

That's a good point. There seem to be quite a few PSP titles ported over to the PS2 lately. This game would sell a ton on PS2. I'd much rather play this on a TV screen anyway, since I have the older PSP model which doesn't have TV out.

If that happens, for those that hold out, and/or don't have the slim PSP/HDTV setup that'll be a nice treat. (Though, there's no shame and/or strain in playing it on the PSP's screen, the action holds up visually as nicely as any other AAA title that's had an entry on the PSP - GTA, Daxter, Syphon Filter, Ratchet & Clank, Castlevania, etc.)

And if it does get ported, at least this game won't have any online modes that will be stripped out of the PS2 release like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror / Twisted Metal: Head On.
