Maybe in a few years when the PS2 finally retires, and costs on making a PS3 go down?

Just curious as to what everyone thinks..

One would HOPE.

The quality of PS2 functionality in the PS3's with the EE in there is vastly superior.

Once the PS2 is no longer being manufactured ... they could just make a new SKU. They do that at least 10 times per console cycle anyway.

In the meantime, I hope they continue to improve the functionality of their PS2 emulation in the 80GIG models.

That's my hope as well. I've got my heart set on them emulating the GPU so that we can actually get some native 1080p PS2 games instead of just upscaling. Then they'd be able to backport the updates to the 40gig and make it worthwhile.

the lack of PS2 support in the lastest PS3 models, is only because Sony changed the rsx GPU hardware to a cheaper and less power consuming model. this model, how odd it may be, is not compatible with PS2 games.

I assume, at this point, that this is true. I have no reason to doubt the story. So if this is true, than it would be impossible to bring back PS2 emulation to the PS3's that have this new rsx.

Precisely.

That's why when I decided to give the PS3 a go, I wanted to find a backwards compatible model. I finally found a 60GB model, after about a month long search.

I wanted full backwards compatibility, since I never owned a PS2, but own several games for it - most fairly uncommon (Rez ;) ). I didn't want to have to buy a separate PS2.

It'd certainly be nice. But then again how hard is it to get/keep a Ps2 handy?

Depends if you want the Phatstation 2 or you want the Sandwichstation 2.

I kept my Ps2 after hearing that Light Gun games won't work properly on ps3. The ps2/ps1 ones.

I wouldn't mind a seperate PS2 addon that sat under the PS3. I just want to be able to upscale my PS2 games and use my wireless dualshock3.

I just looked at my 40gig though and theres no port for any such addon to be plugged into it looks like unfortunately. Guess I'll buy a second 20gig one someday if I ever see it cheap enough. By then I probably won't care though.
