I'm just curious, as I was about to start a few projects and realized I don't have any wire around and need to order some.
I'm not talking stuff that will have much power running through it. Video mods, import switches and stuff like that. And stranded or solid?

It all depends. For the longest time I was using standard telephone wire, 22G, which is of course solid. Well I'm finally running out of the once thought endless supply so I've moved to using standard 22G solid wire which is the exact type you can grab at Radio Shack as "hookup wire." I tend to use solid for switch and output mods since I want the wire to stay put and it will retain a shape if you bend it around components and then tack it down with hot glue. If for some reason I want some flexibility I go with stranded.

I try to use the gauge of the wire by how much current I will be pulling. I generally use between 18 and 22 myself. 18 gauge will usually allow 2.3 amps of power transmission on that wire where as 22 gauge will allow .90 - 1.0 amps of power transmission. I always use solid wire over stranded, but that is just personal preference.
Hope this helps!!!

I use 22 gauge as well, mainly just because I have so much ready access to it at work and the fact that it's a perfect fit for penetrating perfboard and the like.
