I just bought a PSP last night. One of the newer ones (Model PSP-2001) with firmware 3.72 and battery PSP-S110. Is there a way to download a custom firmware that allows me to download games without having to do the pandora battery and magic memory stick?

I haven't messed around with the pandora battery yet, but I'm almost 100% positive that's the only way to get custom firmware on a slim PSP.

From what I am hearing from other people you have to have a custom firmware to make the magic memory stick. So it looks like I will have to have someone else do it for me.

Not to hijack the topic in a way, but I didn't want to make a new one for pretty much the same question. Hoping Norkusa can help me out here.
I have a fatty (psp...) and I'm still on 3.40 OE-A
Should I upgrade to some of the new firmware, or am I still good where I'm at? The only thing I'd probably be interested in is better POPS compatibility etc.
and if I should update (for other spiffy features) what would I need to download to get from 3.40 0E-A to the newest spiffiest custom firmware.
What I've done in the past is the easy install software, but I'm sure by now I have to download one version before downloading the latest or whatever they always talk about.

Should you upgrade? Depends. If you mainly use your PSP for homebrew and PS1 emulation, then you should be fine with 3.40 OE. As far as POPS compatibility goes, supposedly there's a big speed increase in load times with 3.71 but I really didn't notice much of a difference.
I always like to stay one release behind the most current CF, just so all the bugs will be worked out before I upgrade. I'm on 3.71 M33 right now but 3.80 is looking good, so I'll probably upgrade soon.
If you do decide to upgrade, *I THINK* the right upgrade path is 3.40 OE -> 3.52 m33 -> 3.52 m33-4 -> 3.71 m33 -> 3.80 m33 . You might be able to skip the 3.71 m33 step but I'm not positive.

actually if you use Dark Alex's "Despertar del Cementerio" you can skip all the way to 3.71 m33-2 from any firmware.(if you're usin DdC ver. 3).

Are there any real worthwhile features in the new stuff? I've heard about the dashboard customization and what not, but I don't really care about that. My POPS seems to work okay.
I'm just scared I'm so far behind that I will die trying to do one of the steps.

The only reason why you would want to upgrade to 3.80 M33-3or4 would be to utilize all of the psp/ps3 options. And to answer again the slim psp does need a Pandora set to put custom firmware on it. although it will not have 1.50Kernel options but producers for emulators and such are making them custom for the psp.
