So, I bought a new 360 this week. My previous one was jointly owned by myself and my younger brother. I set it up yesterday, and let him use our old hard drive, which had both of our gold memberships on it. After setting up my 360, I attempted to recover my gamertag, but after I got the message saying "Currently downloading your gamer profile from xbox live", I get a prompt that says "xbox live signup is currently unavailable, try again later." My brother had deleted my profile off of the old 360, and I had him try to recover it this morning. He recovered my profile just fine onto the old hard drive/console. I've tried this nearly 10 times, with the same result. I even emailed Microsoft xbox live support last night, and got back a generic email explaining HOW to retrieve a gamertag......not exactly helpful.....
Is this due to xbox live's issues, or is there a bigger problem here? I'm sure someone here has tried to recover a gamertag over the last month.

There's definitely a problem with XBox Live, it's not you. I frequently recover back and forth from the store to home. Could not get my ID at the store at ALL yesterday and thankfully after three tries got it back here at home. I was getting the same message as you.
I finally successfully recovered at an off-hour (about 7:30am EST this morning) so traffic may play a role in it. Keep at it when you can or until something official is posted. Maybe someone else here has a better explanation or link but at least I can tell you that you're not alone with the frustration.

Recover it to your old one and then transfer the profile with a memory card if this keeps happening.

I'd prefer not to drop 30 dollars on a one time use memory card. I already asked all of my friends, and none of them have a memory card that I can borrow. Thanks for the help guys.

I lost my old gamertag.
Had it on a credit card "my mom had paid my year subscription 2 years in a row as christmas gifts" She had cancelled that card And I even bought a 3 month pre pay in anticipation. But at the end of the year they lock out my account. I mean not like downgrade to silver but LOCK IT DOWN so I cant access anything. Try to call the assholes in India and they treat me like garbage HEY I AM TRYING TO GIVE YOU MONEY I WANT MY ACCOUNT BACK.
It just doesnt click with them. "We need to speak to the card holder to sign you up for another year......" After much frustration I said screw it and made a new account and will simply pay for it with pre pay cards.
So I would suggest not charging your live account. If a pre pay runs out it just turns into a silver account untill you put more on it. Thanks for the great service for a many years xbox live holder MS.

After a few more tries, I finally got the darn thing to work.
I just count my lucky stars I didn't have to call India to get this taken care of. I'm not in the mood for it.
Also, for the love of god Microsoft, I just want to play COD4. Just fix your shit already.

I was recovering my account yesterday, to reset the new Godfather acheievements that were recently added. You see, I earned all 10 of the new free ones, but they were broken. Even after the patch they remained broken, so I had to recover my gamertag to "reset" them. Bottom line, it took about 5 tries over the course of several hours before I was able to recover my gamertag. Problem is, my profile is so big that it takes forever to recover. So it came close a few times but then it gave me the error.

Here is an added question for anyone that can help: "Can you merge two gamertags?"
I had a release day 360, and recently bought a Halo 3 edition. Before I went online and recovered my gamertag, I created a new one (actually using the same name) and started to play through Halo 3, Orange Box and COD4. Now that I recovered my gamertag to the machine, it shows 2 profiles, each with the same name, but only one on LIVE. I'd like to be able to transfer all my achievements and saved games from one to the other. Anyone know if this possible?

I don't think it is possible.

I have a lot if issues with live for both my Sons 360 Live acount and Mine..
It's either one of ours is down with a Test Connection Error..but the other 360 is working onine.Which stumps me as I'd figure two acounts/two 360 both should be down..
Two days ago,my Son was playing online and the game kicked out of live..his live went down....But my 360 didn't go offline..
I check his connection..Failed,I check all my connections,my router, online connection via the computer..,I go check online MS where it tells the status of live in your area.(up and Running it says)
I get the codes and went to call MS like a half hour later..
Just as I'm going to call his Live comes back up..
Other,the dashboard will be down..
Instead of adding more bullshit to it they should fix how it works first
It's just frustrating..
The most fun thing for me is to play in an online game with my Son(COD4-Battlfield II etc)
..,him on his 360 and me on mine(I hate split screen)..After spending into that,..two accounts, two 360s,two games each plus getting the time to sit down and do that with him we run into a Live issue(THIS SUCKS)..It just ruins the moment..I hate telling my Son we can't play due to that..
If live goes back up 12 midnight,my Sons asleep
You pay to have Live work like crap.If it was free then I'd come to expect it and not complain..
With Lives issues I've considered buying another PS3 and games on it for my Son to play with me because I don't have issues on PSN like I do live..
I've lost like a months time with Live being down for us,the longest 3 days straight..Calls,calls calls to them..They are experincing problems in my area..
(I estimate it at a Month because it's not "on"when I have the time to play which in turn equals another day that I can't enjoy something I paid for..(to do when I want to and or with my Son..
Some games I can't even get into online,it's sad..(COD3 forget about it.
Other issues..I'm signed in but can't get online,it tells me that I need a Live account?..(this usually happens right when I get all comfortable ready to play..
I've recovered my gametag a few times to try and fix it but now I just wait it out..
Eventually is comes back...It's just live.

And with that, just after writing the above...my Live is down..I am signed in but I can't do nothing..I'm getting an error in my dasboard to try again later..

Well, I tried to recover my account at my parents.....didn't completely work. So now I'm home and I have to recover it anyway, because it was attempted there. So since 6pm CDT time I've been trying, its now almost 11pm CDT.
I have got to remember to bring a memory card in the future.

Pretty much whenever I recover it takes over 10 tries over the course of a few hours before it will fully recover, it works like shit to put it simply.
