Sega Superstars Tennis - SEGA is an asshole

So SEGA decided to go and gather up most of its worst characters and put them in a tennis game. The result is SEGA SUPERSTARS TENNIS.

Here's the crappy list of characters that are going to be in the game

I would be interested in this if they went and got characters from games in their entire history such as Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, Virtua Fighter, and so many more but nope, we get Sonic tennis plus some other crappy games.

Don't get me wrong, having JSR and Alex Kidd in there is cool and all but we don't need 5 Sonic characters and we sure as hell don't need 2 from Nights, Monkey Ball, and Space Channel 5. We don't need any from those. Well, maybe the main guy from Nights but thats it.

So much wasted potential :(

I think the only reason to play this over vitrua tennis would be the characters so since they went and screwed that up, why not just play virtua tennis?

I think that including NiGHTS and reala was a good idea, But they didn't have to put so many sonic characters in. They could have put in some characters from Jet Grind Radio in too.

I'm surprised to see Alex Kidd in there. I don't see anything wrong with Ulala and Super Monkey Ball characters being in there either. Think of it this way: at least there's only five Sonic characters in there, and not ten.

I think they were going the playful side and that's why they left some of the more realistic characters out. Some of the VF kids would have been cool I'd like to have seen more too, Vectorman obviously, and perhaps, Ristar and Dynamite Headdy. But all told, not bad.

I think you're being way too hard on Sega here. That's a good lineup, and yes, it is totally understandable why they have five Sonic characters in there. Because that is Sega's flagship. The same reason why Smash Bros has six or so Mario characters.

So that takes care of the characters (I think, I may have forgotten someone.) I do understand that there's no possible way for them to take a character from every one of their games but the ones I've listed are important. For example, J.J. is the main character from Zillion, which was an old anime that Sega had a part in. They even modeled the gun in the show based on the Master System phaser!


As for stages, honestly what they have going on now is pretty good. They have courts based in Green Hill and Scrap Brain zones from Sonic (hopefully with the same music), an Outrun court (pictured above), and courts in areas from JSR, House of the Dead, Virtua Cop, Nights, Space Channel 5, and Monkey Ball.

However I think they should add a few more, such as a water based court (that Ecco can play in!), a Phantasy Star court in some techno dungeon that PS does so well, ect.

Make them interactive! It would be cool in the HotD stage there can be zombies walking around and if the other character misses the ball it flies past them and smacks a zombie in the face.


The one last bit of speculation I have is this. The secret character is probably Mario. Think about it! Sonic is in Smash Bros so Sega might return the favor and put Mario in this.

Also, I forgot to mention that Opa-Opa can be the referee.

Its just the way that big companies make games now. They try to have the broader(sp?) audience. Including cool (but obscure) characters wouldnt help them with their sales in this generation

Actually, blame nintendo. They're not giving developers the "secret sauce" they need to include online in their games.

Nor will they answer inquiries as to why some developers are allowed to include online and some aren't. Our best guess is that they use a raffle system.

My honest thought, 2 reasons. 1) nintendo still doesn't want competition from 3rd parties (they do, but they don't... It's kind of passive-agressive). 2) They don't think their infrastructure can handle that many games at once.

i got this from gamefly this week and so far its sweet I had a blast with it, its fun, the minigames, and levels are sweet. While I agree they could have chosen different albeit better characters, they did ok, hopefully they can add more w/ Dlc. Anyway, in my book this game is an more addictive version of Virtua Tennis.

well if you have gamefly its 34.00 "used" in my book its worth 50 with all the modes and content, but I am a cheap bastard, so 50 is out of my range right now, but its a fun fun game!!

I think it's a wonderful idea for a game and that the character list is accurate... it's what I would expect.

Believe me, I would prefer to see Toejam and Shinobi running around after a tennis ball, but I will take what I can get. Maybe a sequel would include more.

I got this game today after finding out about the price drop at Gamestop, and I have to say, it kicks @$$ on the 360! The graphics are great.

Does anybody know which default character is a good match against NiGHTS? I can't get past him on the House of the Dead stage. I tried Beat, Amy and Sonic and got trounced each time,

jose - I'm using Amigo for just about everything, and have had great success with him so far. Except in the special match I attempted against Robotnik...where I got murdered.

I love the game so far. I've unlocked six out of the eight hidden characters as of last night when I stopped playing it now because of GTA. Gum and NiGHTS are the two characters I use the most; Gum was a pain in the ass to unlock, with those horrible graffiti missions. @_@ I just wish that the roster had been a little more varied; do we really need three monkeys when Ryo Hazuki, Knuckles and Toejam have been left out?

It is like virtua tennis with super moves and sega characters instead of real life tennis players. It is uber fun.
