View Full Version : Does the video output on PSP slim work well for games

I was looking at buying a PSP slim here in a few weeks. I had the original a while back, but the games didn't excite me too much. Well, now there is a much better selection of games, and a nifty video output for the slim. While reading the Cnet review, they stated that the games were stuck in a 480 X 272 ratio. The problem is that I would love to play these games at home on my 40'' Sony LCD. Has anyone tried playing the games on a similar size TV? If so, is it relatively easy on the eyes, or should I stick to playing it on the small screen? Any advice would be appreciated.

I personally almost never hook the games up to the TV. The screen ratio isn't really the issue for me but more like the length of the cables. I can't sit back from the TV to play anything because they cables aren't long enough. I'd say once you plug the cables into the back of the TV you are working with about 4' or less of extra cable. I like the slim anyway though although the TV out isn't quite what I thought it would be.

Depending on the TVs native resolution, you might fill half the screen. It looks okay, but the sizing is infuriating.

The length of the component cables does feel a bit on the short side (though it happens to be just enough for me to sit back comfortably on my setup).
You could pick up a set of extensions at Radio Shack (though, that would likely double the overall cost of the TV output).
And the screen sizing isn't an issue for me specifically and it might not be for you if your TV has this feature.
While the PSP displays UMD movies and movies resident on the memory stick full screen it DOES have a strange on-screen display for games that keeps the image nearly half the size of the TV set that it's displayed on (Sony claims that it's to maintain the correct screen resolution with no horizontal graphical tearing), however I have a Panasonic 52 inch LCD, and it has a feature that allows for me to "zoom" in on a section of the on screen image. With one "zoom-click" the PSP game image that previously had a large border now fills my screen.
SO, I guess the issue here for you as detailed by all of us is -
Do you sit close to your TV, or more than say 5-6 feet away?
AND
Does your TV have a "zoom" type feature that you can employ when the PSP is hooked up?

I suggest it for movies really and not games. It is fairly decent for watching your favorite UMD, but the extension is definatly needed for the actual games unless you can stand to be very close to your tv.

I feel it works well. I can scale the image on my big screen, but I generally attach the PSP to my PC Monitor (LCD). It happens to have a component connection and the games look much better than they do stretched across the big screen...
