Ok, I was playing Battletoads (see other thread about THAT game) and my TV was dusty... I used my foot (with sock) to clean the dust off and ZAAAAAAP a huge blue spark came out of the right upper corner of my controller onto my finger! It actually hurt too... not a little static one. Anyways, now my NES controller is completely dead. Well, not completely... the A button acts as the start button now.

Strange, and lame.

Damn, that's incredible. You must have had one hell of a positive charge (Or been a path to one). Does your NES still work?

Yah, I was affraid it was the controller port but all seems well. Just the controller that got cooked!

Really high static charges going through sensitive digital electronics is a sure fire way to fry them. When I worked in electronics assembly we had to wear annoying grounding straps on our wrists all the time so wewouldn't build up a charge.

I'd be interested in opening up that Nes controller to see if it's burnt somewhere inside..

I did open it to replace the board with another as it's my favorite controller... nothing burnt or anything... just probably fried the IC in there.

Static shock can be frightening, depending on the intensity. When I first got my MP3 player I tried carrying it in the inside pocket of my all-cotton ski jacket liner. As I walked I would build up a strong static charge which traveled up the headphones and then discharged inside my ears :o. Sounds like you had a similar occurrence with respect to the electronics.

I recall back from my Funco days, the original PS1 was very succeptable to static carpet type shock killing the controller/memory card ports.

And on a non-static-shock nuking controller issue, once a guy brought back and official N64 rumble pack that had something inside "pop" (I guess a capacitor) he said it gave him a shock through the controller buttons when it happened - and then stopped working ... we tested it out in the store and while it didn't rumble the thing got SUPER SUPER hot to the touch when it was plugged into a controller that was attacked to a powered up N64.

Well, as my bum luck would have it, I similarly fried a SNES controller today. Stood up from the couch while holding it, and got a little zap... controller no worky. We have a microfiber-type couch, and it is always causing me to get shocks, so I'm normally more careful.

a similar thing happened to me about a week ago with my Pelican XBOX Controller to USB. I shocked the hell out my leg while using it and it felt like a 14V just ran threw me. Hurt more than a 9V on your tongue. Apparently, It wasn't completely the Controller but my headphones. My Sony headphones had a short... i was like what? the headphone short was a little nick on one of its cords. then i opened the Pelican and checked all my leads/solders and that also apparently had a short as well. I was like damn Lucky!. Thank god i wasn't drinking mt dew or eating.

Both my XBOX USB controller and headphones are over 3 yrs old. i gotta be more careful and check things more often

Wow thats nuts, I'm glad I don't have a story like this to share, but I will make extra care now that I know my controllers can die of shock =x
