Hi Folks,

SOrry if this has already been posted. But much to my dismay, Goodwill is going out of business. All stores in my are are closed down as of this week.

It really sucks, because the manager used to hold all games just for me to look at first....damn.

Sigh......Se la vie, no?

I don't think Goodwill is closing all across the country, heh.

Wow, if that is the case you know the economy's bad.

They've closed a couple here in Edmonton. It's not the economy. It's BAD management. I used to manage supermarkets, and their merchandising and inventory control/pricing policies are BAD. There is nothing wrong at all with having learning disabled people work there (my bro is mentally handicapped), but they shouldn't RUN THE STORE, and in the store's cases in my city, it seems like they are run by someone who is lacking in basic retail knowledge.

First in, first out.
If it's not selling, it may not be an item problem. It may be a price problem.

I tried donating a perfectly working 28in TV last week (wood cabinet -looked fine- worked fine) which they would not take. lady said TV's don't sell.

I felt like saying price a working TV at $15, and have it turned on and working in store, and it wouldn't last the day! It would be sold by lunchtime.

DUMB!!!!!! >:(

Perhaps I need to relax, and spend less time in the thrifts....

Yeah I checked out the Goodwill locations in Edmonton and the retail parts of the stores were closed down. What a shame. I also walked about 2 hours to 2 locations just to find out they were closed down. Oh well. :(

I asked if it was the whole country, he said it was. $5 lets you fill up a garbage bag with whatevber you can find in the store on their last day.

I ignored an article in the paper the other day that was titled,

"Canada losing the Goodwill of the U.S."

I thought it was about international politics, but I could have been wrong ;)

Always sucks to loose a thrift, especially ones that have been fruitful in the past.
Condolences on your loss.

If there is a problem I'd say 1) it's due to bad management, as has been mentioned, and 2) Goodwill is trying too hard to be like a Dollar Store or some kind of upscale re-sale shop. I understand that they're trying to change the grungy image thrifts have, but I think they may be forgetting who their primamry market is (people who really can't afford to shop elsewhere) and could be upscaling them selves out of the market.

What other thrift store has TV commercials and coffee bars?

Well I'll be damned, the Goodwill here in town is closing too! However, the Goodwills in Pasco (where all the game stuff is sent anyway) and Richland (which some games go to but not as often) are staying open so I lose nothing lol.

Goodwill INDUSTRIES is a different entity, if you will, than the thrift stores.
My friend Dan works for Goodwill Industries. He does job creation and placement for people living in the homeless shelter. They also provide assistance with housing, and skill training for work.

Now, this page : http://www.goodwill.org/index_gii.cfm/536/ refers to the thrift stores themselves.

It wouldn't bother me too much if they did close down...never found much of anything in em.

Haven't been to the local one since i asked him if they had any videogames...He answered with, "The employees scoop them up way before they ever get in the store!"

Well, my goodwill is in great shape, has great prices, and has NO plans to close,

I'd REALLY love to know how a place that gets ALL of their merchandise FREE could possibly go out of business.

Also, the goodwill up here gets ALL of targets returns, damaged, and clearanced items. Place is GREAT.

Haha! how can a store that gets everything for free and sells it for $1-$100 can go out of business with 3 employee's getting 6.25 an hour.. AND they are tax exempt for the most part as they perform a community service.. (and run an auction site to get more green) :P

They may be tax exempt but they're not rent exempt... they're not utility exempt... they're not payroll exempt... Besides, I know at least in MA, NOTHING is truly tax exempt. I just paid my penis tax last week. Damn democrats.

That's funny, my penis tax is really small, but everyone else has to pay a lot more than I do. I wonder why...?

Omnedon, wish I could tell you. If you live in the same city as me that would be bad. My Girl Friend works there so she phones me and lets me know when they arrrive, I usually get there before they go on the shelf. :) Or they are hidden in the store somewere, oh I'm bad, ahahahha.

You can't tell me what city you live in?
:hmm:

You could save me some time you know. Common courtesy and all that. I am in 'all' of the local thrifts on a regular basis, and still have finds, but it does seem a tad less lately. What I'd really like, is a name for who to talk to so I could buy the vidgame stuff they TRASH. I'm always after parts for my repair business.

I also know (personally) all of the major game dealers, and the best flea stall owner's on the city. I do all of their game system/controller repairs, cart batteries, etc.

There is nothing wrong with sharing info, and I'd be happy to point you to some of these places...if you live in Edmonton and could use the tips. It works both ways man. Two pairs of eyes and all that.

hehe, No, just given ya the gears. I live in Medicine Hat. Its a brand new village there, and they get most of there stuff from Calgary to sell I believe. I accually wish I lived in a big city, sometimes the selection from other stores is pretty brutal. Altough yesterday I bought 4 cool multicarts and the action 52 Nes cart for $4.00 a piece.

dude he lives in medicine hat, what a weird town name is that!

well yeah its rough times for goodwill, we lost the allston and quincy branches last year and the Jamaica plain branch a couple months back.its not just the GWs either we lost a big urban renewals store and the only AMVETS in boston in the past few months. i figured they do would do better in a sagging economy but i guess not. even though none of these stores ever yeilded me amazing finds each one contributed a cart or two and i'll miss them. a thrift store is a roll of the dice, you dont know what they have until you go, i'll always love that random element to shopping they provide.

If you get to Edmonton Crackerjack, pm me on this forum first. I'll happily make sure you get the most gaming bang out of your stops.

Medicine Hat isn't too bad of a name. Everyone just calls it the 'Hat. Could be worse, could live in:
Bawlf
Beiseker
or
Fallis!
