Just a random thought. We were talking about Mario games the other day at work when I mentioned that I actually beat Super Mario Bros. 3 before I ever beat SMB 2 or the original. To be fair, I actually owned SMB 2 after owning SMB 3. The odd thing about me though is that I beat the first three games in reverse order. It's a good thing there isn't a real engaging storyline or anything I guess.

yes i beat super mario 2 first, then 3, and it wasnt until about a month ago after 13+ years of trying that i finally beat super mario bros. other than this sonic 2 way before sonic 1, megaman 3 before 1 or 2.... i dont know if final fantasys would count as they're largely unconnected but if you consider this to be along these lines the first one i ever beat was 4.

I beat TMNT2 before the first. Actually, I don't even think I beat the first one yet. I have gotten farther than anyone else I know though(not including people on here I'm sure)

Frequently, I purchase a sequel before the original because of sales at the big box stores. Kingdom Hearts II rings a bell.
100th post!
I beat Ocarina of Time before any other Zelda game

I did your mom before I did your sister. ;)
Also, Zelda II before Zelda I.

I did your mom before I did your sister. ;)
LOL
...but wouldn't that be doing "the original" and not the sequel seeing as how the mother gave birth to the daughter who'd be the dude's sister? Thus it be in chronological order.
ANYWAYZ... BACK ON TOPIC:
----------------------------
for me I beat the following prior to beating the originals
Super Contra (arcade)
Rushing Beat Ran (Super Fami)
KOF '95 (Neo MVS)
Virtua Fighter 2 (Saturn)
Panzer Dragoon Zwei (Saturn)

I just beat Star Fox a few weeks ago, but beat Star Fox 64 back when it came out. I beat Sonic Adventure before beating any of the 16-bit Sonics. In fact, I still haven't beaten any of the 16-bit Sonic games.

Tons of times. I could probably make a list a mile long. Star Ocean 2, Street Fighter 2, Mario 2, Final Fantasy 4, Starfox 64, Mega Man 2, etc etc.

I beat Mario 3 before being the first two games.
I beat Sonic 3 before Sonic 1 (or Sonic 2, unassisted).
Shinobi 3 before Revenge of Shinobi.
Link's Awakening before any Zelda game prior to it.
Metroid 2 (once) before ever getting anywhere in Metroid.

That reminds me. I love all the metroid games but the only ones I've beaten are Super Metroid and whatever the GBA one is called.
I owned (and finished) Pitfall II before Pitfall!
I beat Eathbound (SNES) before I beat Earthbound (NES).

Let's see, I can think of a couple, especially considering how young I am and thus not growing through the first few generations of games.
I have beaten Zelda II, but never have finished the first Legend of Zelda. I think this is due to me having no interest in it. Of course, I also beat LttP before II. Then there's Sonic, where I finished Sonic 3 (not with Knuckles, though) before Sonic 1. In the Kirby series, the first game I finished was Kirby Super Star. There's also several series which I didn't get into until recently, even popular ones. The first game in the Mega Man series that I've ever finished was X5. Really. There's probably more as well.
Wow, I really do seem to jump into a series quite late. Of course, I also have the problem of not finishing games, and that doesn't help.

- SMB 2, 3, SMW before SMB1
- Final Fantasy 4 before 1 or 2. Then 6 before 5.
- TMNT 2 before 1
- Burnout 2 before Burnout
- Shadow Hearts before..Ko..koko...something. You know the game.
- Ace Combat 04 before 1, 2, or 3
- Castlevania 2 and 3 before I ever managed to beat 1. Following games in all sorts of fucked up orders, though I managed to tackle the GBA and DS ones in order.
- Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn before BG1/TotSC
- System Shock 2 before System Shock 1
- Duke Nukem 3D before Duke Nukem 2
- etc etc etc
Anymore (like the last few years) I tend to be a hell of a lot more anal about my game playing order, at least.

Megaman 2
Breath of Fire 2
Street Fighter 2
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Star Ocean Second Story
Grandia 2

Phantasy Star 2
These are all games I've beaten before the originals. Of all the games I listed, the only original I haven't beaten is Star Ocean. Im waiting for the remake on the PSP.

I know I beat Mega Man 2 before the original and to continue that point probably 3 and 4 before I finally beat the original as well.

Shadow Hearts 2, then I tired 1 but did not care much for it and never finished, then I played and finished Koudelka, and then Shadow Hearts 3.
Pre-Final Fantasy 7 games of course with the entire numbering confusion for the NES and SNES carts, although I did play and finsih the US releases in order. I've yet to play those "lost" games on my PS1 collections though...
Resident Evil and Silent Hill I've played and beat out of order and I don't think I've played them all yet. Clock Tower 3 also, but I've yet to find 1 and 2 anywhere.
Metroid, Wario, Kirby, Castlevania and Zelda etc. as well, but I honestly don't know the proper order to play any of these. Amazingly I've played the Mario ones in order as those was always must haves.
Goonies II, and for years I thought it was named Goonies II as the movie was Goonies I...
Almost every text or point and click adventure PC game like Zork, Leisure Suit Larry, King's Quest, etc, as I would play the better graphics one first and find it so hard to get around to playing the prior editions.
I'm sure I can go on and on if I look though my collection for examples.
And I'm actually in the middle of doing this now, finishing up Summon Night 2 for the GBA and getting ready to do Summon Night 1. It took me about a year to find Summon Night 1 used in the wild and I had #2 on hold near the last boss, promising I would never finish it until I have #1 ready to go. LOL

I've beaten these games before the originals:
Castlevania II and Castlevania III (years after I played the first part for the first time)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (also played this one first)
Double Dragon II & Double Dragon III (never beat part 1)
Illusion of Gaia / Time (never played Soul Blazer)
Secret of Mana (never played Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure)
TMHT II: The Arcade Game before TMHT (for once, I did play the original first and have beaten that one years later, finally!)
Street Fighter II (never played the original)
Mega Man 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & X (before I've beaten the original Mega Man which I also played after playing the sequels)
Bart vs. the World (have played and beaten vs the Space Mutants later)
Tiny Toon Adventures 2 (played that one first too)
Track & Field II (I've never played the original game)
Asterix & Obelix (I've played and beaten Asterix (SNES) later in my life)

Yes, I did this a lot in the past.
However, for the most part, I try to avoid it. I always take this "you owe it to yourself" mentality, where I think I need to play a games "roots" in order to fully appreciate games later down the line.
This is both a good and a bad thing.
Sometimes earlier games in the series suck really bad, to the point that you have no desire to play the other ones. For example, Dragon Warrior has not aged well. It's very tedious compared to the games I grew up on (SNES/PSX RPGs), and I really did not enjoy playing it at all. It felt way too "forced." I'm sure when it came out it was a tremendous game, but I didn't really enjoy it too much. I then moved on to the second one, and stopped about halfway through. So I'm missing out on some really great games in the series, probably because the very early ones turned me off.
But realistically, a ton of sequels aren't related to the first game at all, and so its not a big deal at all if you don't play it. I always tell people to skip Lufia (average) and go straight to Lufia II (cream of the SNES RPG crop). Granted, that's a really unique example because they two are obviously related (even moreso when you consider that the second is actually a prequel). Maybe the first two Breath of Fire games would have been a better set of titles to use?

Well, I can claim that I beat Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back before I beat Crash Bandicoot. The review of Crash 2 on the Video Game Critic site says that Crash 2 is more challenging than the first one, but I don't find this to be true. I think it's easier. It's my personal fave of the 3 platform Crash games on the PlayStation.

Yes, on several occasions.
1-Final Fantasies IV and VI LONG before the original.
2-Metal Gear Solid 2 before Metal Gear Solid.
3 (This may be unofficial)-Snake's Revenge before Metal Gear.
And that's just to name a couple.

I finished almost every pre-PS FF before I played FF1 (Yay for 500% speedup, man that game is SLOW).
I finished every mega man except 1 something like 8 years before I beat the first one, mostly due to the damn rock monster.

I'm ashamed of this, but...
I beat Chrono Cross before Chrono Trigger :(

I just got bored of Cross. Why are so many people joining me (50!) when I can only ever use 3? Oh and I got tired of tootling around stupid islands doing stuff when I want to be time traveling or somehting.

I finished sequels to both of Sega and Nintendo's top dogs before I beat the originals. ALEX KIDD THE LOST STARS was my first Kidd game, and SUPER MARIO BROS. 3 was my first Mario. Despite playing the sampler to death, I never actually owned (or finished) PANZER DRAGOON until a few years ago - I had instead played and finished ZWEI a number of times before that. The same goes for CLOCKWORK KNIGHT and its sequel.
There's probably a bunch more I played on the NES as a kid that I can't really remember the specifics about - the TMNT, MEGAMAN, and ZELDA franchises are all a wash to me.

Dude, you had the willpower to finish that piece. There's some pride there to be had at least.
Either that or you're just a stubborn bastard. I stopped like 3 hours in.

I beat Tomb Raider Legend, then Aniversary, then went to start at the begining on PS1 and realized why I never finished any of them before. They are so friggen frustrating. Maybee I just suck.

Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas. Whatever order does the story line go. I've beaten the recent ones not the over top ones.

I remember beating Resident Evil 2 back on the Playstation before I beat Resident Evil 1.
Haha, YES! Me too! It wasn't until years later that I played Director's Cut and beat it. The very first second that I beat before the first though (haha, you following?) had to have been Streets of Rage 2, one of my all time favorites. Then I remember after that part 3 came out and I never got to play it though I was so hyped up, when I finally rom played it recently, all my dreams were shattered. *sniff* rest in peace, Axel & friends...

The only ones I can affirm for certain are Double Dragon 2 before DD1 (both the NES versions) and Final Fantasy VII before all the other games that came before it (FF3JP excluded). Everything else is a bit hazy, but nowadays, my compulsive self makes it a point to beat games in sequential order when possible.

a few that come to mind for me:
Zelda: A Link to the Past before the original
Super Punch-Out before Mike Tyson's Punch Out (i've still never beaten Iron Mike)
TMNT 2: The Arcade game before the original
Mega Man 2 and 3 before the original
