I played part one without reading any of the hype at the time and was a fan the moment the opening movie showcased a level of detail that I hadn't seen in any game up to that point. MGS1 on PS1 will always be the one I remember the most. It sucks you in, and doesn't let go, even after you've gotten both endings and think you've completed everything there is to complete. Part 2 was a change and I didn't have too many complaints about Raiden, the flavor of that game was unique and the story was ridiculous but all in all it still had the same great attention to detail and easter-eggs galore. I'm still learning to appreciate part 3 for changing things up once again, and I need to replay it, as it's the only MGS I haven't replayed. After reading this thread, I will not be purchasing the essential collection simply because I only really wanted Subsistance for it's new camera & Metal Gear ports, which I've never played. I also wanted Substance but never got around to it. I believe that it's a great collection for someone who's never played the games to pick up immediately, as all 3 of those games are among the greatest anyone will ever play on any console period. But for the rest of us MGSaholics, I think the real Essential Collection should have had MGS for PSOne on one disc, as well as Twin Snakes on another (MGS fans owe it to themselves to play this great remake, it was because of the changes that this game stood out, IMHO. Plus it got rid of that fruity Otacon ending and made it comical among other things), MGS 2:Substance along with Documents Of Metal Gear Solid 2 on one or another disc, and of course MGS 3 Subsistance as it originally came, with the original ports of the Metal Gear games and a compilation soundtrack that included highlights from all 3 games. And a talking Solid Snake statuette. And Hideo Kojima's address. And a pony. Okay, scratch the pony.

I snapped up a used copy of this collection (mis?)priced at only $20 at a local Microplay just a couple days ago - I've already got the 3 games, but my MGS3:Subsistance disc 1 is looking pretty ratty (still plays, but it's so scratched up that I don't know how), and I never bothered buying MGS2:Substance - but for $20, how could I go wrong... Worth it just for the case cover art! ;)
