I got a PSP for Christmas (finally) and I'm looking for any games along the lines of the older Shining Force titles. Any suggestions?

Also, it's got firmware 3.72 on it. I keep hearing something about "Pandora's Battery" or something. I'd like to be able to play emulators on the PSP... am I better off getting a used PSP for emulation and keeping the new one for commercial games?

Jeanne D'Arc
Lord of the Rings Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Spectral Souls (not sure if I would recommend that one)
Disgaea (another one I'm not sure if I would recommend, but there it is)

Some similar games to the TRPG genre available on the system are:

Field Commander (like Advance Wars for the GBA but with much better visuals and overall implementation)
Metal Gear Ac!d 1 and 2 (card driven mechanics, but if you like TRPGs it might be worth a look)
Generation of Chaos
Aedis Eclipse: Generation of Chaos 2 (these two are more like the Koei Romance of the Three Kingdom games, and have a very high learning curve, but might be of interest)

NONE of the ones mentioned by Gabriel are like Shining Force / Fire Emblem.

if youre looking for a strategic, difficult SRPG, the only one that kinda-sorta-maybe comes marginally close is Final Fantasy Tactics. while it doesnt feature perma-death, if you fail to revive your fallen comrades before 3 turns are up, they do vanish forever. other than that the rest are little more than 32bit-ps2 japanese anime style strategy games which cutesy graphics and limited mature appeal.

as for the emulation of psp, i never hacked my slim, i have a fatty that has custom firmware, you know you can update custom firmware to run new games, so theres no reason you cant have your cake and eat it too ;)

ultimately, its your call, if you can easily access a pandora battery (or better yet, make one yourself) then go for it, if not then dont sweat, other than pirating UMD games the system doesnt offer THAT much in the case of homebrew, couple crappy games, several emulators with marginal support with anything past the genesis although some gps and net radio/portal stuff is pretty cool

also like to mention that field commander is like 90 times worse than advance wars. even if your playing advance wars in the dark with the gba light off.

game is slow, cumbersome, annoying and overall unpleasant. the graphics? nice sure but the camera is annoying as hell.

this is of course all my opinion and others may vary.

Oh, and there's also Dungeons & Dragons Tactics, but I'd only recommend that one if you already play and love the tabletop game. Otherwise, the interface is game ruining.

Your definition of games like Fire Emblem and Shining Force is really rigid. Gabriel mentioned a bunch of grid-based strategy RPGs like Shining Force and Fire Emblem. There's nothing wrong with those recommendations.
