One of the reasons I am a retro game collector is basically because I don't have a lot of money and it can be an inexpensive hobby if you look for stuff at thrift stores and garage sales like I do. I know it can be expensive too, but I am all about gaming on a budget.

So last Saterday I went to my local Goodwill and in the glass case was a Xbox 360 with a sign on it that said: "Won't play games". With a price tag of $39.99. I have fixed a couple of regular xbox's and so I figured it was worth the risk. I could at least make my money back from parts if it couldn't be fixed. So I bought it, took home, fired it up and............ it works perfectly. I have been playing it everyday since with no problems.

Everyone I know that I tell about it can't believe it. A Xbox 360 for 40 bucks? Yes it is true. I would never have bought a 360 otherwise. I couldn't afford it.

Anyways, what super sweet deals have you found?

Probably my favorite was responding to a local ad that was offering a complete in box NES Deluxe set, 30ish NES games and a power glove for 80 dollars. Not bad, I thought and made arrangements to complete the deal the next day.

When I got there, the seller brought out the goods, and mentioned he found an extra item, and just threw it into the package. My heart jumped when I realized that throwaway was a boxed copy of Stack Up, complete with the plastic tray and all parts!

Why do parents do that? I remember years ago when we moved to another house my mom threw out my entire baseball card and comic book collections:(. I never got into baseball cards again after that, but I eventually started collecting comics again.

wow alot of your guy's "excellent finds" kinda suck and are still alot of money.

mine would probally be.
Boxed complete 2600 4 switch w/ extra power brick and 4 common games $15
Rental Virtual boy in hard plastic case all items accounted for + rental instructions $1
Boxed nintendo challenge set (with playes guide sticker) $15
Atari 2600 heavy sixer w/ power brick only and 60 games for $10
Complete Dragon Quest Series for Famicom ~$15 including taxes and customs fees

that last one was part of my robbing japan of some of their harder to find things, like a twin famicom and other stuff, but i bought alot of common games, i probally spent about $500 in games and consoles over there, thats alot of money but to buy it all here probally woulda cost me $2k+

oh and if you have a chance, i asked this before i went over there, YES ITS WORTH IT TO BRING YOUR EXTRAS! there are import stores in japan that are liiking for NES decks and Atari stuff along with the other usual stuff found here

no but they werent a super great deal on page one where some people listed piticular items for $50 or more, it may have been good but not super great.

i also think davids tired of atari so hes gonna bash it. it kinda depnds on where you are theres hardly any of that type of stuff here any more so to find a complete boxed 2600 for $15 is really good considering it wasnt a silver box. most of my atari stuff now has copme from shopgoodwill.com usually can sneak a good deal quite often there but nothing to brag about.
i'm up to 6 different types of atari consoles

that the f*ck does the patch contest have to do with any thing?

i never said any of the earlier posts are bad and EXCUSE me for not living in an area where theres old consoles flying out of ever crack in the wall. i do realize the prices we pay for things does deal with the local economy + whats available but when your paying upwards of $50 for a loose game even if its some holy grail thing its not super great.

$50 is still alot of money for a game, i dont think i have bought any one older game item used for more than $50.

super great is mailmans chuck wagon for $5 or jeffg's Aerofighters for $4 or your jvc junk for a freakin buck.

I was 2 blocks from a yard sale that started at 8.00am they was there all day. I decide to go at the end of the day and ask you have any old games. He pulls out a box of nes and genesis games with an old nes on top and says I will take 15 for the box. He said it is missing the cables I really wasn't expecting anything so I said fine.

Drove around the week end. On tuesday i start digging through the box and what do i find a complete sega cdx mint and working. 7 sega cd games at the bottom of the box. I had been looking for 1 for years . Lesson of the day never let that happen again at least check the yard sale out.

I almost cried when I thought about how I almost missed out someone could have easily picked that up.

I picked up a xcom ufo defense for 10.00 at a pawn.

2600 - Quadrun for 5 bucks at a yard sale pawn store
2600 - Swordquest Waterworld for 1.99 at a Bookmans
Intellivision - Diner Complete for 1.99 at a comic/used game store
Saturn - Guardian Heroes Complete for 9.99 at Gamecrazy

300+ Genesis boxes for 80 bucks
2000+ SNES Boxes for 120 bucks

The huge amount of boxes was from a closing video game store out in Arcadia in AZ. I still have MANY of them today that I've been too lazy to sell. I've made complete games out of almost all the genesis ones, and I haven't started filling the SNES ones at all, I've only pulled what I've wanted to keep. Out of the 3 lots of snes ones I sold a few years back, I made nearly 1k off them, selling at 300+ a lot. It's probably been one of my most worthwhile investments, hehe.

I've never had a "crazy good find", but I've had two particular thrift store finds that made me happy:

1) Link: Faces of Evil (CD-i) for $3.48
2) Genny Model 2 with a Sega CD attached for $4.99

I'm still looking for that one day that nets me a big steal. Until then....

Kinda sad when compared to some of the finds in here, but I picked up two Game Boy Pocket units (each with a game in the back of them: Star Wars and I can't remember the other game) for a grand total of four bucks at Goodwill. They were each marked at four, but they rang up as two bucks apiece.

I gotta bunch of NES stuff on eBay for $55 once. Complete and mint Deluxe Set with robot and about 20 complete and mint games (good ones), game genie, wireless controllers new, some magazines. I sold one of the games for 65 (Castlevania) and kept the rest of the stuff. I was shocked the game went for that much too, but it was real mint, I think a member from these boards bought it.

The first thing that comes to mind is a lot of 20 SNES and PS1 games (all CIB) that I paid $100 for. Included was Chrono Trigger, FF7, FF3, and more goodies.

A few that I can think of off the top of my head:

Sega Saturn (Loose, no accessories) - Free, sitting out for the garbage. I found it while out jogging and had to run a couple miles back with it in hand. Had Rise of the Robots 2 inside of it.

Pilotwings & F-Zero (SNES - New/sealed, non-GH) - Found these at a garage sale marked at $5 each, I offered her $6 for both and the deal was done. Her son was jealous that I still had an SNES at home.

JVC X'Eye (Complete, no box) - While picking up a 3do bundle that I won on ebay, the seller asked if I wanted to see some other things he had for sale...I offered him $30-$35 for the X'eye set and we had a deal.

2 Xboxes - While at a swapmeet I traded two sealed N-gage games (that I had paid $3 each for) for 2 Xboxes that needed work. I was able to use parts from each to cobble together a working xbox that I modded and is now our upstairs media center. Speaking of which...

Various sealed Ngage games - $3 each & new Ngage QD for $49.99. It's still my primary cell phone, but it doesn't play games anymore for some reason, but the sealed games seem to be attracting increased interest by collectors.

NES (With 2 controllers) - $8 at my local Half Price Books. It doesn't even blink with clean games.

Starcraft 64 x2, Paper Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, Dr. Mario 64 - Picked these up for $3.99 each at a Gamecrazy during one of their earlier classic plastic sales.

Intv System 3 and 15 loose games - $5 at a garage sale.

Finally, it may not be the absolute greatest deal but I'm still very proud of it:

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade) - Had some easily fixable problems with some buttons but otherwise in really good shape, $250 at a local auction. Found a Jamma compatible 1066-in-1 set on Craigslist for $180 (normally about $300) and was able to keep the UMK3 board in the cabinet for swapping - so 1067 game arcade for $430 total.
