Regarding the first three (the Atarisoft ones)...

In mid-1988 (the start of some VERY bad years), I purchased an Atari 7800, largely because of it's version of Joust, which remains one of my all-time favorite "Classic-Era" arcade games.
Although most of the arcade-to-home translations available on the 7800 are great, I doubt that I ever would've purchased it if that CV version of Joust had been 100% completed and made available back in 1984. It looks fantastic.

One wonders how different things might've been if these uncovered prototypes- along with Lord of the Dungeon, the 5200 Super Pac-Man and Millipede, and others- had been released back in 1983/1984.

Wouldn't that have been illegal? After all, Atari had the exclusive rights to Pac-Man, Joust, and Dig Dug.

Whatcha talking about? Atari released games on other platforms all the time under the Atari soft label. Ever hear of Pacman on the Intellivision? or Centipide, Defender, Galaxian on the Colecovision?

Not to mention the Apple IIe, C-64, IBM, Ti-99/4a, Vic-20, Spectrum, etc.

Remember, Joust, Pac-Man, and Dig-Dug were all Atarisoft games. Atari could make them for anyone they pleased, really, so it would've been perfectly legal. It was probably the Crash of 1984 that prevented those 3 games from making it (completed) to the ColecoVision.

.. either that- or maybe atari decided they didnt want colecovision to have those, since the 5200 had just come out.

I don't know about that. Atari officially dumped the underrated and under-utilized 5200 in mid-1984, in favor of the Atari 7800, just before the Tramiel take-over. Surely they would've released these games then, if not for the Crash? And what about those 5200 games?

Although Pac-Man probably WAS delayed because of Atari's claim that you couldn't play it anywhere else...unless you owned the Intellivision, or any of a number of computers...

True, but they were crap. I can't imagine Atari releasing good games to the competitor?

Granted, Centipede, Jungle Hunt, and Defender were all decidedly inferior to their Atari 5200 counterparts, but Galaxian? It looks, sounds, and plays superbly, maybe even better than the 5200 version; even the title screen is very impressive.

I agree with you Aswald -- I never liked 5200 Galaxian (it looks great though) and the CV version looks and plays closer to the Namco coin-op, IMO.
