I've got a slim PS2, all of which are supposed to be 480p enabled for DVD's.

I just bought an Olevia 37" 720p/1080i LCD panel and when I tried to watch a DVD through component it came up as 480i. Is there something I have to do other than just hooking it up and watching?

I *know* the TV and PS2 are working properly as I WAS able to play GT4 in 1080i, so this is just a problem for movies.

By all means you should be able to get it to 480p - the only reason I could imagine getting 480i would be if your using rca jacks , but you clearly said component, and standard dvd's run in 480p unless some were released at 480i o.O did you check all the settings on the TV ? I believe some have settings you can play with for video display.

PS. Love the midori days sig :P

I didn't have to change any settings to get GT4 to play in 1080i, at least not on the TV, only in the game.

It was a Best Motoring DVD and not a normal movie, so maybe they don't play in 480p, but I don't know why they wouldn't.....

I'll try my copy of CARS later and see if that works.

I need an upscaling DVD player.

the best (and only ones to consider if youre serious about video) upconverting dvd devices are either HTPCs, the Toshiba HD-DVD players and the high end OPPO DVD players.

Only later models of the PS2 are able to play DVDs in 480p, but all can play games in 480p, if the game has that feature. I know because I have one of the older ones.

You have to set the PS2 to "progressive scan" in the DVD menu. You can only access the on-screen DVD menu while a DVD is playing. If you have the official PS2 remote control, it's a lot easier. If you don't have one, a regular controller should still get the on screen menu to appear. This bugged me when I first got a LCD TV, I couldn't figure out how to get 480p when playing DVD's. It's in the DVD menu.

That worked for me!

Thanks. Going to go watch "CARS" in 480p now. It's still a little grainy, nothing like 1080i airwave HD, but tons and tons better than 480i.

Yep. I've got an Oppo and an HD DVD player and both are great at what they do. The Oppo players also have the distinction of being able to play PAL discs and are made region-free with a few button presses.

Sounds good. Does anyone know if PAL DVDs are capable of being played in 480P or are they only encoded in interlaced mode?

I'd never heard of these Oppo things before, but apparently they get rave reviews.

I'll have to look into it in more detail.

In the meantime, 480p looks pretty damned good. I haven't even calibrated the TV yet, at least not with a disc.
