Before you get yourself too excited, make sure you have the following -
1. A slim PSP (the extra onboard RAM is required)
2. The slim PSP audio/video remote unit
3. A PSP communication headset (preferably the official PSP model)
... if you have the following, you can upgrade your PSP to firmware 3.90 and enjoy the benefits of SKYPE!
For those of you who don't know - SKYPE is one of the best, most inexpensive PC VOIP software / services available.
I've been a SKYPE user for over a year, and while I don't have incoming calls, I do get UNLIMITED outgoing calls to anywhere in the world (cells OR land-lines) for only $30 (USD) PER YEAR!
AND
Free VOIP calls to other SKYPE users.
What does that mean?
You can now use your PSP over any WiFi connection to call peoples phones - OR just call other registered SKYPE users (either on PSP or PC) FOR FREE and talk as long as you want.
So even if you don't want to pay for the ability to call other phones ... all your slim PSP owning friends can now chat you up and help you save your limited "weekday afternoon" cell-phone minutes.
Sure, SKYPE can easily be called a "vanity" feature ... but, if you live in an environment where you get access to free wi-fi, you have a PSP with all the necessary digs, and you pay for a year of Skype ($30 for unlimited outgoing and $60 for unlimited outgoing AND incoming calls)... well, do the math ... that's a hell of a lot less than a monthly cellphone contract.
I've tested my PSP Skype out pretty extensively today, and the call quality is great ... I'd say better than the Skype software on my PC even!
