I was at GameStop today getting some GBA games with that coupon that's out, and noticed that both the Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness strategy guide and the Persona 3 strategy guide were $9.99. What's up with that? I thought they were full priced until they pennied them out... ? And anyway, I was surprised to see either there in the first place, since it seems like GameStop doesn't generally bother with DoubleJump guides.
And no, I didn't dig through the rest of their guides searching for similar price irregularities.

Back when I worked at Babbages (2003-2005) this occasionally happened. Not often, mind you, but occasionally. I couldn't tell you the rhyme or reason for it, I've just witnessed it.

I noticed some of their strategy guides have dropped. I picked up the Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass strategy guide for $9.99. They also had the Mario Galaxy guide (which I had just paid $19.99 for it) and the Metroid Prime 3 guide for $9.99. The Zelda and Mario (not sure about Metroid) guides also have...you ready for this... a Gamestop exclusive cover (which is just a glitter-like cover)!!!!! Just awesome!!!

game stores receive their game guides dirt cheap..that's how they get most of their commission...not really surprised about the price fluctuations.

They recently dropped the Halo 3 guide to $9.99 too. And occassionally they'll advertise $4.99 strategy guides in their email news letters(thats how I found out about my $4.99 Fear strategy guide). As for the Double Jump guides, they have alot more than you think. Castlevania for the DS comes to mind, the first one. I know the second one had one but I'm not sure if DJ made that one too.

Nope; Portrait of Ruin was a Brady guide. An excellent one, too.

Yea, I noticed this on CAG a week or two ago. A ton of guides get marked down to $10. I picked the Persona 3 one since that one is becoming a little harder to find in my area and I like having the guides for Atlus games. I also saw the Mass Effect guide for the same price, but I'm thinking about saving the bundle with the art book and the guide.
Here's a list of some of the noteworthy guides at this price.

Just to point out, Gamestop (and EB games) employees do not get paid commission.

Before Gamestop bought the chain, Funcoland employees used to get paid commissions for every cleaning kit and subscription they sold.

I've never understood the pricing at GameStop, but that is probably the intention.

The Dawn of Sorrow guide was by DoubleJump, BTW. That's probably what he was talking about.

Incidentally, I never saw the Dawn of Sorrow guide at any GameStop, and I looked for it.

Funcoland is gay (sorry for such harsh word), during N64/PS1 era, my buddy (who owns a game store) would dump games that Funcoland paid ridiculously high amount for store credit (Mortal Kombat N64) and take out some consoles, you literally see employees chasing customers and asking them to buy cleaners.

Guess I'll have to hunt for a Persona 3 strategy guide. Hope a local store has one...
