Here are some of my tips for Galaga. These should apply to any version of the original arcade game: MAME, NES, PSX, Game Boy, what have you.

There are only so many wave formations in the game - maybe 6 or 7 total. Learn to recognize these from the patterns of the first aliens to enter the screen.

You stand a better chance of sticking around by staying steady on the stick, not sliding around wildly back and forth. Likewise, conserve your firepower - blasting away indiscriminately only works if you've allowed the aliens to take up a full formation at the top of the screen. (Letting them do this is something you shouldn't do, by the way.)

Keep a double ship only as long as it helps - if the squeezes get too tight for a double-wide, let them blast your extra ship. You can always get another one.

Challenging stages: stay in the precise center of the screen and STAY STILL for the first two challenging stages. For the third, move to the left until you're about 1/3 of the way from the far left of the screen. For the fourth, you'll need to move around a bit. The Challenging stages are non-lethal to you from an attack perspective, but absolutely vital if you're gunning for extra ships.

Learn to anticipate the path of the blue bee ships. They're at their most defenseless when they coming back up from the bottom of the screen, behind your ship, and heading back to the top of the screen to rejoin their formation. They're sitting ducks if you can get a clear shot on them during this time.

If you've already got a double ship, take out the motherships ASAP when they enter the fray. They're more trouble than they're worth if you let them make it into the attack formation in one piece.

These are some of my tips for playing Galaga. Hopefully they'll help.

Just do the trick where you stop them from shooting! :D

(but I don't know if it works on the NES version.... :P)
