It's being overlooked for DMC4 and Culdcept Saga. But I just saw the 'Jefferson Airplane' commercial for it, and I guess I had forgotten it was coming out today, as well.

This is an RPG I actually want.

Anyone get this today?

EDIT - My bad.... IT comes out on the 12th.

I am getting it simply because I want a great JRPG ona next gen system and this looks to be the very best so far from the veryminimalselection. If people care about reviews, ones I know of sofar are:

Gametrailers:8.8
Xplay 3/5
IGN 8.2

Allgreat scores, even from xplay considering they have hated every JRPG except for FF12.

I'm a huge jRPG fan, and this game is one of the main reasons I'm going to be getting a 360 to go with my PS3 and Wii once I get the extra money.

yeah this comes out nest wednesday, I am renting it from gamefly for money reasons, but it sounds and looks good. Obtw f%%^ xplay and their review I watched that obomination they called a review and they are full of it, their main gripe with the game is that its not "NEW" or "revolutionary" wow, when was the last time FF changed their games "drastically". They are full o' @##@ when it comes to reviewing any RPG's for the 360. Anyway, the game looks great and I am looking forward to this game next week.

um.... Final Fantasy 12? Just sayin.

Lost Odyssey has been added to my list of "to get" games for the 360. I'm in no rush though, I haven't finished Oblivion yet, and Mass Effect is just sitting there. I wouldn't mind giving Blue Dragon a try either, I dug the demo.

Having played 40 minutes of the game so far... its freakin sweet, of course I am comparing it to Eternal Sonata, which I like, I haven't given it enough of a go round, and blue dragon, I am waiting for a price drop. But this game is NICE. the battles are nice, the gameplay is sweet, and so far from what I know of the story, its great. This is the JRPG I have been looking for on the 360. Anyone else get this yet?

i've already dumped 14 hours in it and just finished disk 1, it has an incredible story interesting charecters and lots to do, but just to warn anyone who's been weened on the last feew years of rpgs like blue dragon and ffx this game is HHHHHARRRRD, which I love :-)

sweet, I enjoy a good challenge, but out of curiosity, what do you base it on for being hard?

Blitzwing256
02-15-2008, 08:49 AM
several factors, mostly the random encounters are tough, you can't just spam A and expect to survive every encounter reminds me alot of the sega cd version of eternal blue (not the forgettable psx version) you need to use real strategy on the bosses (no super combos or gignormous summon spellls to cheese your way to victory) from a non-combat point of view many of the puzzles i've encountered are pretty tough and make you think (not as tough as some from lufia 2 but still a challenge). Definaly a reason for rpg fans to own a 360.

I've been following this game closely and now thats its out and reading your thoughts...I may break down and by a 360 with tax returns....ugh!!!! Sony is depressing me with the lack...oh ...like 1 and a half RPG's on the PS3..I never thought I'd have to turn to MS for my RPG fix

This game also scales enemies to your experience level...making level grinding obsolete (similar to FF8) and has even taken it a step further. If you try to level grind, the random battles start giving you only 2 or 5 experience points (a pittance). An interesting way to eliminate grinding. This forces players to use strategy over simpling leveling up and powering through boss battles. Very uncharacteristic for a JRPG.

I bought this and have only gotten about 3 or so hours into it. I didn't realize they scaled the enemy levels which I think kinda sucks because I like the level grinding of jrpgs. Although Oblivion did the same thing and I loved that game. It makes me wonder what the point of having experience points and leveling up is when they scale the enemies. Fortunately the story is sucking me in and I think the visuals are fantastic. The first battle of the game is pretty fun to watch too, it has a lot of potential for being a good franchise.

carlcarlson
02-15-2008, 10:19 AM
wait, you can't grind? that kind of sucks. while the necessity of grinding for hours is not something I like, the lack of any kind of grinding also doesn't sound right. I always liked having that as a fall-back if I needed it. Can't beat boss X, go grind for an hour and try again. Now it's "can't beat boss X, get on gamefaqs and find out how to beat boss x". I'm all for using my brain and strategy and whatnot, but I've always liked the option to brute force it too.

Hmm... y'know, I've been in some sort of RPG mood lately, and... well, this seems like an awesome game, I'll admit. But can anyone elaborate as to what sets this apart from RPGs today? I'll say that the discouragement of grinding is a good start; I love it when you're just able to move things along at such a sterling rate without having to put the kibosh on things for the sake of killing weak-ass enemies to kill the strong-ass enemies.

...you need to use real strategy on the bosses (no super combos or gignormous summon spellls to cheese your way to victory)...

This is the truth! I got to the first boss, expecting it to be a pushover. I knew I was in trouble when its first attack was a 'hit everyone and take half their HP away' spell. Combined with individual hits for over a third of each character's hit points, I spent most of my effort trying to resurrect the inevitable casualty from every round (300HP per character, combined with 100-120HP attacks from the boss and only 100HP heal spells = very bad). I only had one person left in an it-or-me position when I finished. If that's the first boss, then I'm already scared of the others!

I think the reviews have been unfairly harsh on the 'unoriginal' aspects of the game. Sure, it's more of the same, but that's fine with me. Sometimes I want some originality (FFXII), but sometimes I just want to stick to the familiar. Also, the complaints about load times are fairly exaggerated. Yes, there is loading, but I'm never twiddling my thumbs waiting for stuff to load. The longest load time I've seen is about 15 seconds, but most things load much quicker than that.

I actually expect to finish this game, unlike Blue Dragon, which I thought was only so-so. And coming from me, the person who rarely plays a game for more than an hour or so before never playing it again, that's a serious compliment. :)

ha I didn't even know there was that leveling scaling in the game! (i don't like to read anything about a game till i've finsihed it) I spent about 2 hours fighting in the crimson forest trying to level up and it took forever to go from 19-20,

the game can be demascalating to someone who has beaten some of the tougher rpgs out there...especialy when you get stuck in a stand still with a party of keceleons with no way of them killing you or you killing them! I had to run like a bitch (I never run) not once but twice when i came back for revenge. deifnatly a game I will remeber.

I'm at about a level 13 or 14 and can't beat the damn boss worth crap. I only tried fighting against him twice but have still yet to beat it. It is really hard for a first boss compared to pretty much any game at all.

during battle there are no load times, and so far the "magics and summons" requires no loading or skipping, the battles are very seemless. Great game, go pick this one up!!

Blitzwing256
02-18-2008, 05:43 PM
Battles take a few seconds longer then most rpgs to load up, but theres no long spell animations or anything even remotely like summons (i'm near the end of disk 3 and nothing of that nature has shown up) the battles take awile and most of the random encoutners are relaively hard but the encounter rate is low so it balances out nicesly.

The enemies haven't become strong at all. I sailed to Numara Atoll onced I'd unlocked the gamble spell and realized that stats didn't effect the damage delt. Ie. I could instantly kill monsters in the back ranks even with full GC. So I ran around in circles killing high level creatures (mostly silver kelonians) until they started giving me the bullshit 1 exp a piece.

edit: more specifically I equiped my front row roster with the support casting skill, and had Kaim, Seth/Cooke (depending on whom I was leveling up) on Ming and Sarah. Ming and Sarah would then cast Gamble on the Silver Kelonian and killing it before it had the chance to run away. The other battle you can trigger in this area is some giant fish with 9000 HP. I ran from him with the turn-tail skill because he takes to long to kill. And when you can manage to do it, he gives you same level up the easier Kelonians do plus a measly 2Sp as opposed to 8Sp. He's just not worth the trouble.

Now whatever I fight in the linear dungeons deal like 1 hps worth of damamge to Kaim and Seth. I'm barely leveling up of course, but I'm blowing through Disc 2 and 3 and a retarded pace.

I wasn't tempted to buy Blue Dragon until it gets a significant price drop, but reading about Lost Kingdoms I'm really tempted to buy the game for (God help me) sixty dollars. (lowers his head in shame)

Is it really a hommage to Final Fantasy? How is the game compared to the very good and best of the best?

I get more and more the impression this game is what I hoped FF XII would be. (although I loved FF XII and played EVERY mission)

Ok at first I said to myself, number 1....I don't like Mystic..all they do is bash FF left and right . But what did I do being the little hypocrite gamer I am? Yeah I got both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.

I must admit Lost Odyssey has Final Fantasy written all over it and I am only 3 half hours in. the graphics are incredible. Back to random encounters and turned based action. The voice acting is superb and the battle system is simple and easy to use. I am very impressed, much more with LO then with BD. And Mystic still gets my respect. But seriously 4 seperate DVD discs and they dind't even fit all of them in the spindle in the case. They give your Disc 4 in a paper holder by the manual...very ghettoish.

After having played the game through to completion, you either have the patience of a saint or you mean the Elemental Temple. :P

I finished the game at level 94. I beat the final boss at 89 but then spent 4 more hours hunting for missed treasures.

I also want to say this, my husband bought the guide. At first I refused to use it (hence the extra four hours) but towards the end when the dungeons got a little loopy it would have been useful. That is if Prima HAD FUCKING DRAWN THE LAST FOUR DUNGEONS. I mean how lazy can you get? They just aren't in there. Three of them at least include descriptions on how to proceed and grab all the treasures along the way. But the Elemental Temple? The one with the fucking 3D dimesnional rotating passageways? Nope. You're on your own.

The guide also neglects to provide a map of the underwater treasures. And for no reason what so ever neglects to mention a few items scattered through out the game contained in dungeons and towns that otherwise have complete maps.

Fucking retarded. Seriously.

Oh. And they were just wrong about Tolten's achievement. Which implies to me that when the writers for Prima make these guides that they probably compile a pack of materials sent to them by the developers instead of you know, actually touching the game it's self. Which is why I like to buy Double Jump guides, you know they care about the game they're covering as well as their customers.

I'm past the first disc and loving it!

Does this game remind anyone else of the original Valkyrie Profile?

1) They're both heavily focused on death and dying
2) They both have a multitude of mini-stories about people dying
3) Those mini-stories sometimes are plot related and sometimes just bonus
4) The main characters in both aren't entirely sure who they are

Just that and the overal vibe they give off. Anybody else get that feeling?

Day 1, three hours in.

The opening movie and battle simply blew me away, probably the best start of a game I've ever seen. Of course, it settles in and becomes a brooding RPG but so far, so good.

I finally quit after the first real "boss", a sort-of dragon with various wind-based attacks (my friend John Hardie has these, so it's not as scary in the game). Not an easy battle but finally victorious, I concluded that the game is worth continuing. The graphics and sound are amazing and the overall battle and item system are open enough where I don't think they'll be boring after 40 hours. We shall see.

I actually finished this game friday night. I think my save file had a little over 80 hours. I most likely had more than that because of wasted time screwing up and having to do something again. I was around level 55 or so with most of my characters when i beat it. I missed several of the side quests and a few items here and there. I just got back into gaming this past year after not playing anything much for years and this game really pulled me in and its one of my favorites.

Ok resurrecting thread because I finally beat it. SPOILERS ABOUND!!

I really enjoyed this game. I was level 51 on most of my characters but 41-45 on some I didn't use much, and had no trouble at all with the last two bosses.

I really, REALLY loved the storyline up until Disc 4. At that point everything sort of fell apart, and where it didn't fall apart, just turned to cliches to get itself through to the end. Basically, the stories of the 4 good immortals were really interesting to watch unfold, but then the one rogue immortal turns out to be your average RPG egomaniacal nutjob who's jonesing for world domination. Meh.

Although the last Disc left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, I still love this game. Best Next Gen RPG by far. I give it a 9/10.

Oh, my other major gripe is that accessories show up on your body. This isn't so bad in fight scenes, but during all the major story moments of the last 1/3 of the game, Kaim was wearing a ridiculous pair of bright yellow cat ears on top of his head. There is such a thing as taking immersion too far!!!!

The fact that Cooke's voice actress, Kath Soucie, uses the exact same voice she used for Lil in Rugrats makes me laugh out loud at the most inappropriate times. Cue dramatic music, cue crying scene, enter Lil. My WTF meter just jumps all over the place at that.

Because I "set" Kaim with skills he learned from skill link that weren't available from accessories, therefore the accessory-only skills I wanted I had to keep the accessories on to keep them available.

Sarah did spend much of the game with a cute little flower barette though, that was nice.
