View Full Version : Classic Pokemon Hall of Fame corruption?

I've never gotten a straight answer about this...

Back in the day of Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, there seemed to be considerable talk about people not wanting to use a Gameshark to cheat because it would mess up the Hall of Fame. But I never really learned about how or why the Hall of Fame could get corrupted. Does anyone here know?

And more importantly, does the famous non-Gameshark trick for catching any Pokemon really not mess up the Hall of Fame (or anything else) ?

the biggest and easiest way to mess up the hall of fame is to catch and or fight missingno or M using a gameshark, as well as catching and or putting a pokemon with higher then usually obtainable stats in a box and or beating the game with any of those enhanced or fucked up pokemon. (you can catch a missingno or M without gameshark and it will cause the same effects. the short verison, some codes will mess it up some won't. just using a gameshark for a casual code or two won't do anything bad by itself.

I was basically going to say what Blitzwing said. Whatever you do, don't catch the Missingno. That will not only screw up the Hall of Fame records, but it can erase all the pokemon in your pokeboxes. I really don't think just basic gamesharking does much bad to your saves. I've used a Gameshark to get some pokemon that I'd normally have to trade for, or something like that.

I caught Missingno and never had any problems with the Hall of Fame data, or anything else for that matter. Maybe I was just lucky or something, I guess.

Yes, yes, stories of Missingno wreaking havoc are not at all uncommon; there has never seemed to be any question of that. I'm wondering about other problems. (Using a Gameshark to get Surfing Pikachu, for instance, seems to often be cited as a risky manouver.)

theres several variants to missingno and M, some of them are perfectly fine, some totally mess up the hall of fame (but nothing else) and some versions of him will destroy all your save data. he's one of those "Catch at your own risk" kinda pokemon.

Everything seemed to corrupt Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. The game must have the shoddiest code ever.

the code is fine, its when you add data that shoudln't be there is when it gets fucked up. m and missingno were in game glitches, the game has ALOT of data to save so lots can go wrong when you do things you shoudln't. its just like editing a pc games save file, you can really fuck stuff up if you don't know what you're doing ;-)
