While I think that the speakers offer flavor to the show, I often saw most speakers talking to a paltry small amount of people in the crowd. I really dont care where the show is. I am just lucky to go to several of these in the past. I look forward to seeing more of these hopefully. Helping put on the NWCGE event in Portland, planning an event can be exhausting a huge headache. I can only imagine how much of a headache planning from thousands of miles away from the event can be. Good luck with future shows guys.

Part of the diminishing crowd for speakers probably was linked to the fact that in the past few years, it has almost always been the same speakers doing the same panels. I'm not trying to be critical, but having attended all but one CGE, I have seen each panel at least twice, maybe three times by now and there is only so much new information these guys can remember some 20-25 years after the fact.

sorry to hear about that CGE got cancled for 2008.
I understand the problems finding a location, since I tried to do that for my show.
and I basicly found out that our one location was the best for this year.
We did intially want to move out to a new hotel, but the costs wasn't in our favor.
Keep The show in vegas, as long the duce is running in vegas I don't mind it being back at
plaza.

Anyone looking for a classic video games show on the west coast should come to the NWCGE event in Portland this September. All the details are still being worked out but I'm going to try and be as involved as I can and make it the best NWCGE event ever.

Bummer. :( Though I wouldn't have been able to go this year anyways.

I am looking forward to NWCGE's Portland event, though. Toby, if I get any ideas for the event, I'll send you a message.

I'll have to look into some of those other events, this is really sad news. I was iffy about the show skipping a year last time, and it still turned out alright... hopefully the same can be said this time around.

I highly suggest NWCGE Portland this year in September.
It should be awesome.

It's too bad that CGE won't be happening this year, though. I was looking forward to attending it for my first time, but I guess it might work out better for me being next year because I wasn't sure if I could make it to Vegas this year on my limited budget.

But anyway, please do look into NWCGE Portland. I'll be there, Cryptic Allusion will most likely be there, and other awesome people may be there too. Hopefully Rick and John have something awesome planned as welll; maybe an after-show screening of a movie, a guest speaker, great prize, Ground Kontrol after-show party, or just more of the great stuff from last year.

RY, since you live in SF, you should go to California Extreme classic arcade and pinball expo in San Jose, CA. They havent updated their website yet but the dates are July 19th and 20th, 2008. You wont want to miss it. Here is their website...

heh, well, now i don't feel as bad about exiting the west coast early - there is no way in hell i would have put up with bullshitifornia for long enough to make CGE2k9 a convenient stop.
I Reccomend you all go to CDE in green bay instead....august.....video games are dumb, go drink.

sucks for those who were excited for cge though...

Yeah, drinking is better than video games; solves all your problems, eh?

Best way to solve your problems is to drink through them, I say!

I was also bummed out there was no CGE this year, as it was going to be my first time there representing NintendoAge.com. As they say, the show(s) must go on, and we've organized an event in the Southeast (AGEExpo.com) for anyone interested (September 6th). Stop on by -- we're currently looking for vendors, sponsors and affiliates, and registration is open for anyone who wants to attend.

Hope to see you guys there,

I normally don't dig up old threads but this whole thing just amazes me.

While at California Extreme this year I was thinking about CGE, which for one reason or another I had pushed out of my mind up until that point. That's when I dug up this thread and realized that the show was canceled for 2008 due to problems finding a place for the show. This surprised me as I thought the reason it was moved back to Las Vegas was because a permanent home had been found.

You have to realise that it was a huge undertaking to even move the stuff to California from Vegas for the two years that it was held in the Bay Area.

There it is. From what I remember when it was held in the bay area (at least the year it was in Burlingame, I remember a lot of comments that the convention center in San Jose was simply too large for the show) turnout was equal to the years in Las Vegas and there were plenty of venues in the area that wanted to host the show. It seems the costs incurred to move it back to Las Vegas didn't benefit anyone in the long run.

I honestly liked the Vegas shows better because it was established there, and the two different locations in San Jose and near San Francisco just did not seem as enthusiastic, but you can sure get a lot more game industry folk having them up there.

Again, agreed - and isn't that a big draw for the show? I've read comments about it being the same speakers every year but being in the bay area don't you have a better chance of getting fresh blood each year in the rotation?

Part of the diminishing crowd for speakers probably was linked to the fact that in the past few years, it has almost always been the same speakers doing the same panels. I'm not trying to be critical, but having attended all but one CGE, I have seen each panel at least twice, maybe three times by now and there is only so much new information these guys can remember some 20-25 years after the fact.

Again, points to above.

I suppose I'm part of the problem however because I have yet to attend a CGE, the last couple years have been unsettled for me as well. However it would be nice to at the very least get it locked into a multi-year contract somewhere.

Well....there's more to the cancellation than just the fact the Riveria wasn't keen on having a return of CGE. I believe life intruded on one (or two) of the show's organizers and - rather than doing it half-assed - it was agreed to hold off the show this year until next year when they can use their whole ass, so to speak. But there's more to it than just location, location, location.

No, there will not be a CGExpo this year.

You sure?

The website says there will be. "Anyway, not to worry, there WILL be a CGE 2009! "

Holy crap, The Riviera is STILL around? I went to Vegas in 2002 and again in 2005 and it seemed to be on death's doorstep. I can't imagine what it's like now.
