I used to do it. I got Pirates that way for my Commodore 64. It took almost two hours!
I used Xmodem (later I got Zmodem cause it was "fast").

Before I got a car I used to ride a bike. It took hours to get around!
I used a Diamondback BMX bike (later I got a Haro).

Man one time I hit the lock button using a 1200 baud modem and damn if it didn't take 2 seconds to lock a thread.
Those were some excruciating seconds let me tell you.
