View Full Version : Where's the magic from? (minor spoilers for various games)

It always bothers me in RPGs when characters can use magic right off the bat, with no explanation as to how they got the ability. I'm not sure why, but I like to have it be a part of the story.

So, what are some of the best ways that games have had characters "come into" their magic? Some examples (minor spoilers ahead):

Legend of Dragoon: only Dragoons can use magic, and only some people can be Dragoons, and even then, they must be in their Dragoon form to use it. How each character becomes a Dragoon is usually a unique experience (the most underwhelming of which is Kongol's...). I liked this one a lot.

Chrono Trigger: Spekkio decides to grant the ability to anyone you bring to him (aside from Ayla, who predates magic; and Robo, who is a robot), provided they have the potential. This isn't too spectacular, but works.

Final Fantasy VI: Terra and Celes are unique in that they can naturally use magic. Others get the ability by using the Esper stones. This is probably the most broken form of magic in any game, because anybody can learn any spell :)

I put this in CG because there are way more classic RPGs than there are modern ones. Post away...
