These used to pop up a lot a few years ago (five?), but I haven't seen them recently (until now). The specs, even at the time, were low, and now they are extremely so, but it's still pretty cool.
There used to be a lot of guides out there on how to DIY, as well.

One day I'd like to mod my mac mini into an NES. I wouldn't think it would be that hard considering it's size. The French are a clever bunch. Figure I'd make a nice generalization about the French for once.

that computer hardware is sucky in terms of being a accual computer, definitly not worth 500 euros

I dunno, years ago when these first started popping up (including the first mainstream one which I saw live at a taping of TheScreenSavers) if you put the right mini-itx board in there you could get some great performance. Remember they're not supposed to be ultimate gaming rigs but instead compact emulation and media systems that look slick in an entertainment center.

I've got a dead Magnavox Odyssey system that I'm planning to gut and turn into what you've just described, I just haven't figured out how to do something useful with the analog controllers. I was thinking as using one controller as a sort of cursor control (one knob for vertical, one knob for horizontal, english knob for scroll and the reset button for clicking) but I haven't got the electronics confidence to do so, yet. The other controller would house the video/audio out sockets. Right now I'm waiting for someone else to figure it out first and then I'll do what they do.

Hey! That sounds about right! :D It's the Original Magnavox Odyssey (the one that came out in 1972). I've got five of them and four of them work because the fifth gave its parts for them all. *sniff*. So now I want to play taxidermist and turn it into something else. I'm thinking I might be able to rig an Odyssey controller so that it works with an Atari paddle controller to USB adaptor. I might not be able to make it work like a mouse, but with some of the front end MAME software out there, it may make a neat "dial a game" type of controller. Ideally, the stuffed Odyssey would serve as a white box-y TiVo thing.
On the other hand I could just make a flower pot out of it.

I was expecting the NES hardware to run XP. This topic title is misleading.

Why is it none of the controllers have logos on them? They look too "high quality" to be pirates.

Well, the old Contiki operating system was vaguely a step in the right direction, though it seems no one ever took it much farther as far as NES hardware goes.
(Hmm, seems the Contiki web site is down at the moment. There's the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contiki), anyway.)

I'm surprised we don't see more of these in US ebay auctions--I'm sure it could be quite the cottage industry to those inclined to put in the work.

I'd love to see this up and running on a PET!

Years ago you could find them now and then on eBay and some of my friends and myself were thinking of making them for the sole purpose of resale. However no one really wanted to put up the money and Afterburner modding GBA's took up most of our time shortly thereafter (and filled up our wallets - damn I miss those days).

i need to see some water cooled, 150% over clocked ass kicking nintendo systems that will play new pc games with ease.
i'd do it if i had the budget. god knows i got enough systems with bad, but repairable shells

i have a nes case hallowed out and the bottom perfectly smoothed out. all it needs is a itx bourd and innards.
really these arent so bad, assuming you will create it just to play cartridge roms on your tv. they can come w/ hdmi out so nes games will look amazing on your hdtv. and you cna play everything with a kickass 360 controller.
i am looking to get rid of my case... overall the setup hardware to make the pc not suck is about 400-500$. depends on specs of course. you could prob make one for 300 and 700.
