omg ok well heres what just happened I was testing a first gen playstation a friend of mine wants to buy. I grabbed the the top game in the stack and it just happened to be asteroids (A). I was seeing if the lens needed cleaning and all that but when I got to lv one I was shocked. It is a exact copy of the atari classic with colored in shapes. Now I've seen this before atari to nes mainly but not being a disk collector i had no idea activision would do this. I picked up the game in a bag sell a while back and never thought of it again. insanity or cheap game design staff lol probably both. Was wondering what you guys had to say about this.

Activision / Atari did a bunch of "updates" of arcade classics on the PS1 ... and most of them were relatively decent, and notably Frogger sold ASS-LOADS through the life of the PS1 system ... it may have wound up on the top 10 selling games for the system.

I recall Asteroids for PS1 while similar in design as the arcade classic (as it should have been) being more similar to the late 80's update Blasteroids - with multiple selectable ships and power-ups.

I liked most of the PS1 arcade classic updates of that era ... especialy Space Invaders ... and I didn't have any problem with them being similar at their core design. They SHOULD be if they're "udpates" of a classic, no?

well Frankie_Says_Relax you right and I think you know that but IMO I'll stick to my 2600 for all my asteroids needs. By the way its not my favorite game so maybe thats why I was so confused.

The 2600 version of Asteroids isn't that great. Have you played the arcade version?

While it's far from perfect, the Atari 2600 version has it's charms ... and If you like that version and have a working PS1 handy - you can find decent emulations of the original arcade version

I'm a big fan of the PS1 Asteroids game (and the Space Invaders remake from that time frame, too). I think it captured the essence of the original quite well, and gave the gameplay enough flavor to keep it interesting. Plus, the bass beat blew out my friend's subwoofer a few times(he loves the game).

2600 Asteroids? Really? I always found that one painfully easy.

Wait. What? People bought that shitty, rushed "game"? Augh!

2.94 million copies in the USA.

Probably double that if you could find the global sales records!

And, yes. It was pretty awful.

The arcade version of Asteroids is available in PS1 Asteroids as a hidden level; it can also be accessed using a cheat code.

You guys play the Atari 2600 version still? I tend to stick with the original version of Suicide Mission on the 2600 with the Supercharger. A great vector style Asteroids game that they had to change to avoid a lawsuit. Spinning rocks... rock.

I still play the N64 version occasionally. It's identical to the PS1 version without the load times. A decent update. VCS Asteroids is still quite playable, IMO.

Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness (PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Dreamcast) received positive reviews.

Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs for the Nintendo 64 was horrible. :(

I liked the idea of that game but the execution was very un-fun. Funny, I was just watching "Tank on the Moon" on Science earlier this evening.
