Here is a question that is on my mind today. When it comes to the old Nintendo PlayChoice arcade games where any of the games different? I seem to remember playing a version of Super Mario Brothers on one of those arcade machines but it seemed modified (harder enemies and maybe question blocks in different locations?). Does any of that sound familiar to anybody?

Thanks!

I believe that would be VS. Super Mario Bros. The PC-10 games are nothing more than slightly modified NES carts.

vs. SMB was the first "NES game" I ever played. It's what sparked the revolution in my personal history of gaming. I remember fondly playing it in the local Milano's Pizza shop, which is in the same spot, but COMPLETELY different inside and twice the size now. Been through probably 3owners since then too.

Anyway, yeah, vs. SMB is harder, the secret blocks and 1-ups and all manner of other things are in different spots or changed to something else, but it's 99 percent the same game.

I remember an arcade version of SMB at the Pizza Hut in the town I grew up in. In level 1-2, it had a buzzy beetle under the coin bank instead of a goomba. I always wondered why that was different. Was that vs. SMB?

Here's the spot I'm talking about:

Heh. I think the first time I ever saw SMB was in an arcade, but I remember seeing the Goombas in 1-1 spring up a while after being stomped on in the attract mode! Considering that I was less than 7 at the time, I think I must have been mistaken.

In what is the most awesomely cool difference between Playchoice-10 and NES, you are asked to enter your initials at the beginning of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! on the Playchoice-10. It then in turn tracks the fastest knockouts and saves the fastest on the battery, much like the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!

Very nice.

Very cool. I think I am thinking of Vs. SMB instead of the PC10. So here's another question, and if it doesn't belong here I apologize, but are these games emulated? If so, would they be for an NES emu or MAME?

both the vs and the playchoice games are emualted by mame (i remeber playing through vs castlevania a few years back on it)

I think a lot of NES emus support the VS as well.

most of them do, but the vs versions have a differnt palette and require an extra input (coin) that most emus didn't do back when I tried em.

Using a flash cart, you can play the vs games on a real NES, but as said above, the colors are all different for most games and there's no coin button. A NES can be adapted for one, however.

Yeah, In addition there are other differences, the cut scene for the training montage is different, and they don't give you a password either.
