View Full Version : SCPH-79001 won't properly play PS1 games on HDTV

Before I had the issue of using the offical Sony component cables for the PS2/PS3 on my "fat" Playstation 2 with an HDTV. They worked just fine on an SDTV.
I just went out and bought an SCPH-79001CW (I missed the $99 Amazon deal) and tried to get it to work.
It worked beautifully with all my Playstation 2 games. When I try to play any Playstation games though, the splash screen displays in the background and flashes.
I haven't tried to the regular AV cables or taken it to the SDTV to see if it will work. I just want to be able to use one damn cable to play all my games. I don't want to use the RCA cable if I don't have to either.

Sounds like your tv doesn't like the resolution PSOne games run at through the component input, if you have Ico for the PS2 I bet it won't work either.

Should have saved the money towards a PS3 instead as it natively kicks out low res PS1/PS2 games in a format that HDTVs don't hate. Also, HDMI cables tend to be cheaper than decent PS2/PS3 component cables :(

A PS3 doesn't change the native resolution of a PSOne or PS2 game, but it will upscale them to higher resolutions and solve this problem.
However, good luck finding a PS3 with good backwards compatibility. The 20 and 60 gigs are all but gone, the 40 can't play them, and the 80 has decent compatibility with a lot of games but problems with many others. That's for PS2 games at least, I think they can all play PSOne titles.

Yea, but even before the 1.80 firmware that added the zesty fresh upscaling, it had always scaled everything up to a minimum of 480i, which was super handy since I was pretty damn tired of having to switch to svideo on the PS2 whenever I wanted to play a PS1 game. Plus, you know, hdmi (less clutter = yum).
PS1 backwards compatibility isn't affected at all on the latest PS3 models...all models have the same emulation of that going on (and I believe the basis was from the emulation used in the slim PStwo), which is a good thing. It's all about Tomba, baby.
Hopefully the rumored downloadable PS2 plan will roll out at some point and we'll get full on emulation of the GPU...then maybe we'll finally be able to get our PS2 games natively rendered in a higher resolution. At the very least, 40GB owners will be able to play PS2 games finally. Hell, I'd be happy if they enabled an option for PS1 games (Colony Wars @ 1440x1080 on my television? Yes, please).

My HDTV doesn't like PS1 games either. The pictures usually freezes up on the splash screen or it'll split the picture, permanently showing the splash screen on the bottom half of the screen and the game will continue along normally on the upper half of the screen. It also has issues with a few PS2 games, like Art of Fighting Anthology.
Now you know why I keep an SDTV and a PS1 around. :P I'll switch to the SDTV for PS2 games now and then as well, both because of the aforementioned problems and for the fact that some games look like ass on a HDTV like Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne with its screwed up looking text.

I didn't want to buy a Playstation 3 yet. I'm acutally waiting to see what the Ceramic White model brings to the U.S. I'm hoping a nice pricedrop. :)
I'll probably get a portable LCD screen for the PSTwo anyway. I do lots of traveling with my job and it gets boring with nothing to do after awhile. Hopefully an LCD screen will correct the PS1 game problem.
The games play fine whenever I use the RCA inputs on the HDTV but it sucks now that I can't have the Saturn and PSTwo hooked up at the same time. Maybe I'll find my RF Adapter so they can all work happily together.
