I still need to let out a bit of aggression, so I'm making this thread for you to brag and/or reminisce while curling in a post-traumatic ball. What are some of the most improbably difficult things you've done in games that you've somehow managed to survive?

I'm making this thread to celebrate my most recent accomplishment: Beating No More Heroes on Bitter (Hard) difficulty. Y'know, with the Tsubaki MK-III and its infinite energy, coupled with its ridiculously awesome low charge attack, the game seems like cake at first. I was slashing mofos left and right and dealing the pain to bosses, and while they gave me some trouble, I didn't have to continue until Bad Girl. I got so steamed at her that I managed to keep blocking her from running to the batting cages and hitting the conveyor belt gimps at me! Then came (name withheld for spoilers), and she was TOUGH. I think I continued about three times before working out the method of madness against her. Apparently, you can only dodge her combo right, and I kept doing so, returning the favor with oodles of slashes, and I beat her eventually.

... but the real final boss... whom I won't mention for spoilers again... *cries* UGH. Pithy damage from all my attacks. Insta-death attack looming over. So many unblockables. Shadow dodge kept failing on me. Too... much... baaaaaaaadnessssssssssss... *bashes head while tears stream down face*

BUT... at least ninety minutes of straight perseverance led me to victory, and it tasted delicious. Granted, I am pissed that I missed one measly trading card and the compulsive collector in me will HAVE to get it next time I'm on break from college, but for now, I'm just happy I whomped the game on such an improbably evil setting that didn't seem too bad until the very end. So, would you care to reminisce about such brain-hemorrhaging experiences for us to enjoy?

Couple of things for me

Making it past stage 2 on DDP DOJ with a single life on the hardest setting, a game I still practice and play to this day.

No damage clear using Kevin on Desperate Times Very Hard Nightmare mode for RE outbreak file 2, I also got an A rank once with 3 other people on VHN Showdown 3.

The hardest most insane sick shit I ever faced in a game in my whole life is technically 2 things.

I played FFXI for a number of years and long before most people were doing the chains of promathia quests ( take any FF game quest and times it by about 500% ok that might be pushing it but it is close, not even penance is this hardcore and he is hardcore! ) my group or ls made it to the bomb bcnm ( there was a 30 or 60 second timer to kill this guy ) anyway because these particular BCNM battles were a huge step up from the norm and because it took pretty much 5/6 ( or all 6 ) party members to be hardcore on the ball and with little to no room for error, this and the final airship fight had a few runs untill we were able to figure out how to deal with them.

I went in with 6 people, with 12 seconds left my white mage and me ( on dark knight ) were the only ones left standing and I was pulling mega hate pounding this thing going all out cause it was now or never, he healed me and I had 4 seconds left on the timer and delivered the killing blow as all hate was sent to him and he died which was epic, my adrenaline was pumping like crazy for 2 mins after that.

The final battle was 40 mins or 60 ( its been so long ) where you are forced to use your 2 hour on the one of the boss fights ( there are 3 in a row with cutscenes in the middle while the timer is still counting ), if you fail you literally have to wait 2 real life hours for it to go back up and the meds you use in it at the time cost around 1mil gil, it took us almost 7 tries to beat it because some people who had already won decided to skip ahead ( which caused mega drama ) and left us with some of the most shitty party setups you can imagine, 2 of the players with our final party to say the least were also "dead weight".

We did beat it after pure hell and with about 54 seconds left, that is something I never want to experience again in a game.

That whole COP quest event took close to 3 real months to finish because of dealing with peoples work schedules and other things.

Beating Battletoads in Battlemaniacs a couple years ago. First two levels weren't that hard, but the Turbo Bike scene was tough. But after some practice, I got better at it.

For some reason off the top of my head...beating Mega Man 8 on the PS1...

The first Dr Wily stage and that damn "JUMP! JUMP! SLIDE! SLIDE!" snowboard crap took me some time to master.

I'll be honest, most other insane titles just turn me off to them with time. Games like Battletoads, Ghosts n Goblins, Fester's Quest and others are so insanely hard...it's just not fun to play them.

I remember beating X-Men: Children of the Atom on Saturn. Magneto was so f'n broken and Wolverienes ending was so crappy that I never played that game again. It seriously took me an hour just to beat Magneto. Everyone else was pretty easy but it took me longer to beat Magneto than it took me to beat the previous 8 or whatever people. I'mused to fighting games have an excessively tough boss but that was just overboard.

I posted about the utter brutality of getting a medal in the Paint Roller minigame in Kirby Canvas Curse. I guess it's possible after maybe a few weeks of practice.

Zuh? PR has his own minigame in CC? I still REALLY need to get that. Hell, I've been detatched from Kirby in general as of late... don't know why that is, I just haven't got any of his games past... what I think was Crystal Shards for the N64? :embarrassed:

Oh, and beating Gradius 3 for the SNES in Arcade difficulty was a trial... and beating the actual arcade version of G3 was a trial-and-a-half!

May not seem like much, or may... but after losing to Death an hour straight (Dracula X SNES), I perfected his ass the very next go. It was sweet :D

The Gradius 3 arcade game will ejaculate on your face and call your mom a bitch. :whip: Did you use a lot of credits?

One of my personal accomplishments that really sticks out is finishing Life Force (NES) without dying. I did it ONCE.

I made it to stage 2 of MSX Salamander. For those of you unfamiliar with the MSX version of Salamander, it's the videogame equivalent of brutal prison rape.

I think I lost count around how many credits I used at the Moai level. That floating Moai head is just... he's just... he sucks mightily. Don't get me started on the last two levels. I want to stay away from the nightmares that they have attributed to my fractured mentality... >_<

And that IS impressive about beating Life Force without once dying! I wish I could do that, but the goddamn solar flares in the third stage usually ensure this as an impossibility... no, scratch that: The closing gates at the very end of the game are guaranteed to break my streak.

However, I CAN claim to beating Castlevania 1 without dying at all, and the same for Super C. Oh, and Contra? Beat it without dying... TWICE. :-D

Steven: I'd have to say that's impressive myself. Ol' Grimmy somehow seems harder in that game than in Rondo of Blood, and he's still pretty tough there regardless.

7th Lutz: So did I... hell, it's the very first story I talk about in Memoirs of a Virtual Caveman! *plug points +10* :D

I got one. Getting that damn sunshine sprite in the stupid pachinko special stage on Super Mario Sunshine. I tried for hours to get that damn sprite and when i did finally get all 8 red coins, the stupid sprite shows up in the middle of the board and the game MAKES you go get it without falling to your doom. I know I wasted over 30 lives trying to get that damn sprite.

Was it that hard for you? I got it on my first try and I'm not exactly good at Mario games.

The only thing I can contribute is that in SA2B, I beat Knuckles' Wild Canyon stage in 00.29.49 (mission 1). That's under 30 seconds. I hold great times in the hunting department since my boyfriend is very competitive and has set world records in Sonic games. It's an all out war between me and him I tell you, and he still can't beat my time, ohoho.

That, and the 'storm drain' one. But even both of them put together can't compare to a certain coin challenge in the Toy Time level on Mario Galaxy. Anyone who's got through THAT will have a couple of scars, believe you me.

Did it.

How hard did you find it Coldguy?

I bet you did it quicker then me, i did it over a period of about 18 months, just playing from time to time whenever i could.

I can't remember the stage but there was one level that done me in where you just had to drop through a black void a number of screens deep and remember where to move left or right to pick up the Yoshi coins as you fell. It was only much later that i discovered that the cape slowed your fall at let me glide accross to pick up each coin. Still an effort though!

I got through the TT coin. Also, 100 coins on Rainbow Ride in 64. I had 99 and died. Took me three more tries to beat it. Some of the other stars in that game (building the snowman) are difficult as well.

My best is probably beating Earthworm Jim on difficult without ever having to use a continue. This was the special edition too, so I had to get though Bruty and Instestinal Distress. It took me a long time to get good at the tube race, but now I could probably beat it on my first try.

Ninja Ryukenden/Gaiden 1 without being hit. Ever. Except for one glitch hit delivered by the Bloody Malth. There is video to prove it ... somewhere.
