I'm a DC noob. However i noticed that ebay mostly flooded with 2 different DC versions. One in a black-orange box another one in black/blue box. Looks like both are US versions. What is the difference?

There where several variation, I have a sports pack the has three games: basketball, baseball, and football. The system is white for this variation. The outside of the box looked like this:

But it was just a cover over the black box. I also have another sports pack that has just football and basketball and it does not have an inner box. The system is black for this variation.

Huh... I know it's sports but... all three of those guys are black. Even the baseball player.

Notice how on the one with the black system, there's only two black men on each side. The one with the white system has three black men, but the white console sits in front of all of them.

It's just another in a long string of blatant displays of outright racism/racist imagery by Sega, who might as well just change their name to "the fourth reich".

So there were a lot of black people gracing the covers of sports games that year? I dunno. Or maybe it indicates a target audience. There wasn't really a point, just an observation.

I never noticed they were black, but one has a barcode on his head. He should really get that looked at.

Back on topic, does anyone know when they switched box designs from the launch cover to the updated one? (Maybe it was when the game spines switched to black as well.)

Technically, the baseball player, Pedro Martinez, is not black. He is from the Dominican Republic. Yea diversity!

That doesn't mean that he's not black, that just means he's not "african american".

Yep, same time.

It was a slight re-branding to 'boost' sales by showing the coolness of the system and how futuristic it was. It didn't work.

Another warning you might not know. About half-way though it's lifespan in the US, they changed the coloring of the "Dreamcast" bar on the side of the instructions from white to black. (Earlier games will have a white bar, like Soul Calibur, while later games will have a black bar, like Shenmue).
