Well, that's certainly a very generous gesture. I'll be looking forward to Saturday to see what exactly does get released. I'm sure there'll be loads of interesting Sonic stuff, but I'd like to see what else there is....

awsome, if all prototype holders were this generous. And Sega stuff to boot. I cant wait!

I daresay that entirely too much fuss is made over those Sonic betas.

Now, if the unreleased Impossible Mission 2525 is finally in there, that would make me happy!

My exact opinion as well. This is the kind of stuff that ought to be preserved as well as possible, not hoarded in a box in a closet / rented storage room / garage. Kudos to drx for the find and for being so willing to put it all out there, though I'm curious if it being a collection of data on a CD-R versus individual carts has anything to do with it.

Without trudging through 15+ pages of the linked thread, is he basically working right now on converting everything to a common format and documenting it? That's gotta be a hell of an undertaking by itself.

drx is a hero, he saves data from death and / or imprisonment

check out http://www.hidden-palace.org/ for other things he has released, and send him money so he can continue to do so.

Wow, I'd shake his hand if he was in front of me. I can't count anymore as to how many times I've heard people gloat about their proto's and they keep them hidden like a million dollars they stole from the bank. I'm looking forward to see what he has other than the sonic stuff!

Hey =)

There's well over 100 protos here... crazy stuff. It's not only Sonic protos, there are many more non-Sonic protos here, so stay tuned =)

I'm still going through them, sorting them out, building them etc. It's fun.

I have 250 or so Mega Drive protos, 15 32X protos, and 39 Game Gear Protos...not including the ones I have for sale in my trade box.

DrX: Are those actual boards and EPROMS, or just files and data you are assembling?

I have double that MD, many times more 32x, same for GG =P

About your question, it's a little bit of both ;)

An awful lot of those protos seem to have been created only days apart from each other... but I have no doubt that they are of interest to some. Look! Phantasy Star IV! And Streets of Rage 3!

(No Impossible Mission, though. :( )

I've got the file coming down now. Turns out there's a Sonic R Saturn proto in there too as a bonus! Anyone got the capability to see if there are any differences between the proto/retail?

Anyone fancy a Streets of Rage 3 proto? There's 18 of those and 12 Sonic & Knuckles....

Nevermind...I figured it out myself...I only downloaded a few that are of interest to me. Thanks very much for releasing the prototypes and I look forward to more in the near future.

yeah, really! what's the point of paying big bucks just so you can say you have something that everybody wants, but no one else has? it's very selfish and only shows that some people with big bucks have big egos to stroke...

kudos to you for being so generous with your protos, DRX... I hope you get enough donations to be able to continue your efforts, and hopefully pwn all the other proto collectors so badly that they finally get the message that they should be sharing the protos they own with the rest of the world too!

I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with this type of talk, and I will tell you why I take exception to this.

Who are you referring to? What proto collectors do you know of that are hoarding and not sharing. I'd like to hear this since I can count most of the proto collectors on one hand.

kedawa
02-27-2008, 02:51 PM
Yeah, don't let one or two gloating assholes warp your perception of the scene. Most collectors seem pretty eager to share what they've got.

rbudrick
02-27-2008, 03:11 PM
Well, Jason, I think it's dangerous for him to single anyone out. However, there are folks out there who aren't proto collectors per se, but when they do get one they don't share. Of course, this is his or her right, but it doesn't mean folks necessarily like it. ;-)

Some folks do so to protect their investment. Some folks share whatever they get, and some folks didn't pay crap for their proto and still don't want anyone else to have it. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Personally, I just want all protos to be preserved for historical reasons. I try to give roms of every proto I have as soon as I'm able to dump them, but that's just my way.

Rob, I understand that, people are free to do what they want with the stuff they buy. I am just interested in hearing this perception of what "big money flaunting collectors" are buying up protos and hoarding them because I think there is some misconception regarding this.

I probably end up on the hoarder's list, i have an entire website dedicated to showing off things that other people can't have. But honestly, how are you supposed to distribute a terabyte of betas? Don't get me started on bluray betas, 35+ gb each?

It's become impratical to release modern betas in any large scale effort.

You're stuck with usenet and torrents. Neither of which are reliable...

I tried to leak a 400 mb beta once, and it turned into a complete clusterfuck. Multiply that by 10 and it becomes impossible, and that's just for one build. I have some titles with 10+ builds.

Of course a lot of them are titles that nobody cares about either. While a lot of people might check out an alpha build of Jak II, how many people are really interested in kelly slater's pro surfer?

You may be stuck with torrents, but I'd settle for that to get a hold of your goods. QUit hoarding teh romzors! ;)ROFL
