Hello friends, everyone log into your Steam accounts and buy Audiosurf for only $10.
It's a music/puzzle game of sorts. You pick any song you want to play and it generates a level for you, using the beat and the notes and stuff as bumps and curves and blocks and everything. You then either pick up all colored blocks and dodge the gray ones in the Mono mode of you can play any of the other modes which have you sort the colored blocks into groups of 3 or more for points, kinda like a high speed columns.
Here are some videos I took
Ninja Mono mode, pick up colored blocks and dodge grays
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlhBjiP-Doc&feature=user
Pointman Elite mode, scoop up blocks and put them in different columns kinda like Klax.

There is a high score table for each song so you can compete with people around the world.
You can use any song you want provided it's MP3, ogg, mp4, itunes, and I forget what else. Check audio-surf.com for details on that. It turns the song into a level that is always the same. Since you can compete with others online for a high score you can hover over their name on the leaderboard to check out the graph for the song, the song length, and their various bonuses to make sure they aren't playing some totally different version of Beat It or whatever to keep things fair.
The game is only $10 on Steam, and it comes with the Orange Box soundtrack! I've been playing it for a while and it's really fun because it has the best soundtrack of any music game ever.
If you're still not convinced, you can download a demo over steam as well.

It actually is a pretty awesome game and would be extremely familiar to any amplitude or frequency players out there. I have only played the demo and still debating on buying it, but everyone else should at least give it a shot. It's fun and a little addicting.

I want to buy it but Steam won't accept my PayPal or my debit card! ;_;

It reminds me of Enduro. If it wasn't Steam/PC only and it was on a console, I would be all over this.

Well, who knows? Maybe it'll show up on XBox Live or PS3. I hope it does, but having to have your own music may be a problem... you know how pesky music companies are.

I bought this game on a whim after seeing this topic (anything that allows you to use your own music is a major plus in my book). I heartily give it two thumbs up. The timing and placement of blocks is great, and the way the track moves with the song is perfect. I recommend playing long, grooving songs to get a good feel of what the game is like (*coughcough*Willie The Pimp*coughcough*).
The leaderboards are a very good addition. Every song that you play, be it one of the included ones or one of your own gets its own leaderboard. I've played some obscure music only to find that someone's already played it and gotten a higher score than I, which is pretty cool to see.
So yeah. If you enjoy puzzle/rhythm games, grab this one now. It's only $10, what have you got to lose? Thanks for the thread, Overbite.
Oh, yeah, FYI: This game doesn't seem to play nice with any ATI graphics cards. I have a Radeon Xpress 1150, and when I booted the game up for the first time, menus were garbled and text was unreadable. Fortunately, I was able to change some settings around on my card and it fixed it in Audiosurf, but for those of you who have similar cards, you might want to poke around in Valve and/or the offical Audiosurf forums (or download the demo) before plunking down the monies.

It works fine on my crappy ATI Radeon 9600 Pro.
I managed to find someone at GameTZ to help me purchase it, and I spent an hour playing it. I have to go to bed... but no, one more song... Aieeeeeeeeee.

Hahaha, that's exactly how I felt. Like Jackattack mentioned above, the game can certainly be addicting.

Sucks I can't meet the minimum requirements. This looks like a killer game, right up my alley.

Even so, download the demo to test it out - my crappy computer can't even handle flash video files and I get FULL SPEED with low graphic settings, but high resolution. :)

I only played the demo but annoyingly it didn't let me test out the mode i wanted to most - Ninja Mono and I could only play a couple of goes on mono on easy and normal. So not enough to see if I really wanted to shell out any cash for the game.

ITT Audiosurf usernames.
I know there's a few people playing this game on the board, so (if you'd like) post your Audiosurf usernames. I'm not really looking to start a DP group or anything like that, but I think it would be fun just to compare scores, songs played and so forth with other people from here.
So I'll start: "Gapporin". Pretty easy, eh?

My username is, of course, Kitsune Sniper.
bcks007: It's a program you download, which lets you purchase games and run them on your system. Some people hate it, some of us don't really care one way or another. :p

my Audiosurf name is Overbite, but my steam name is srbite
you can get steam at steampowered.com, its free to download. You can use it to buy games similar to what xbox live is like on the 360, but there are no points.

Actually, there are, in a few games: Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode 2 have 'em.

Two people have tried to beat my high scores in two songs I have.
I completely obliterated one record (my first try was 18k, the new record was 19k, and then I crushed it by getting 50k), and barely beat the second.
Man, this is addicting.

Update: Still addicted.
I'm a nuthair away from ninja mono stealthing "Christmas Eve / Sarajevo" on Ironmode, but I always seem to pick up one single gray block at the stupidest moment. Observe this video (http://www.roushimsx.com/sa/Audiosurf%20-%20Christmas%20Eve%20Sarajevo.wmv) that I recorded a little earlier and laugh at my pathetic playing ability.
Still only playing Ninja Mono, still only playing Ironmode. It might not be the highest scoring mode, it might not be the most accurate to the music, but fuck me if I don't find myself losing an hour at a time to it.
One of these days I'll do pusher elite or double V elite....one of these days.

I love love love the e-mail notification system that Audiosurf uses. I was afraid that once the novelty of using your own songs to create tracks wore off, that there would be nothing to bring me back to playing this game. The e-mails provided that replay value. I've even created a little filter on my e-mail client that sifts all the Audiosurf e-mails onto their own folder, so I have a list of "objectives" that I still need to complete. God, this game rules.
I've been having a heckuva time trying to regain the Pro score for Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & #35". Got very close, but was still about 1k away (The top score was 75k, and I got 74k). Now whenever I try it, my score is usually 40-50k, which annoys me to no end.
Besides Ninja Mono, I haven't really given Elite mode any playtime. But I'm having a blast using the Pro Eraser. Also, if you haven't noticed, the Friends Browser is up now, so go check it out!

Not a very good run, but it was on ironmode, finished clean, and I stealthed it...so screw it. The run right beforehand I had picked up a hell of a lot more blocks but botched it around 2:10 in on a mistimed juke to the left :( But hey, #1 for now (again)... if I get topped, I'll go back in and do a cleaner stealth ironmode run before I throw in the towel and migrate to pusher elite.

Shouldn't be too hard to improve on the score. I'm hoping to get it up to 150k sometime this week, but in the meantime I'm defragging the hell out of my capture drive in the hopes that I can snag my stuff at 60fps. I tried to do a video of a stealth / clean finish / iron mode run of "We Are 138" by The Misfits and it's god damn impossible unless it runs smooth. The timing for a lot of those traffic groups is way too tight.
If you need me to rip some CDs, let me know on AIM sometime. I'm always down for helping a fellow goon :)

It's funny how badly I felt about this run while filming it since it wasn't going completely smooth and yet I somehow managed to top my previous high score.

(click image for a video of the run)
Lots of room for improvement, but thankfully it's a short and highly enjoyable fast paced song to practice on. After a round or two of this then pretty much everything else feels like cake.

It's as different from Amplitude is as Dance Dance Revolution is from Beatmania. In Amplitude and Beatmania (and Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc), you actually generate the music...unlike DDR and Audiosurf where the music is static but determines the level that you play.

So, is anyone still playing this?
I kinda dropped off when my school semester was coming to a close, but now I'm back to playing it regularly. They've also tweaked some of the stuff in the game since the last postings, such as:
- last.fm audioscrobbling (whatever song you play in Audiosurf automagically gets added to your last.fm profile)
- Comments tab on every song's scoreboard
- Customized player news on the song loading screen (when friends last played, songs you're champion of, etc...)
- New hover vehicle for Eraser Elite
- Added Vegas ability: generate a random powerup every 60 seconds
- You can play freeride as a music visualizer on your desktop while other applications are running, and it will automatically advance to the next song in your current folder or current m3u playlist

Hell yeah, I recently became heavily addicted to this. Quite possibly the best $10 I've ever spent. :)
