In case you missed it:

Starting February 24 (ie this Sunday), Target stores across the US will be selling slim PS2s for $99. Yes, that magical, mythical $99 price-point. The advertisement specifically mentions that this is part of a sale, but with support for the console dying off and the PS3 picking up steam, is now the time for Sony to give their ageing warhorse one last kick in the pants and adopt this price across the board? Why, yes. Yes, I'd say it would be.http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3057/ps2targetun5.jpg

Of course, since I just bought the singstar bundle on boxing day.

Thats awesome yet depressing at the same time. I remember working at Target when PS2 came out and the Psone dropped in price a little after - they put it in the weekly ad and tons of parents came out to buy their kids a psone. Mind you this was around the time psone only had a few uber cheesey kids games coming out, and its like..that should be a sin - your buying your kids a system thats old and no longer has support..cheap bastards lol

Might be time to get a back-up PS2. My slim console worked great until I accidentally tried to boot an Xbox game in it. Now it sometimes takes several tries to boot a game.

Hmm, might be time to upgrade my old PS2, it's been DRE'ing like crazy. I wonder how hard it is to mod a slim PS2 to play imports...

ouch - sounds like your system strained the eye trying to read the xbox game - the same exact thing happened to me. When I was younger my cousin put a ps1 game in my saturn and usually Saturn will pop up to the option screen where you pick an app or play a cd but in this case it kept trying to read it and never worked again ::cry::

It isn't difficult to mod them. I did that to mine. If you want the easier and safer way, then you will need to buy a new flip top lid and swap magic disks.

So far, this is just a weekly sale. It's quite possible that next Sunday they'll be back up to $129.99.

hmm my local eb has had them for 110 for the last few months im pretty sure i figured that was the price pretty much across the board.

I modded my original PS2, I can't even remember what modchip I bought, but I recall I had to solder two dozen or so blue wires to surface mount pins. I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, but it took me quite a few tries to get it right. I hope I don't have to go through that again! I guess it beats paying someone to do it for me.

That's not always a bad thing. I didn't get a Sega Saturn until August of 1998. The console wasn't even on my radar as something I should get but it was given to me as a gift. And despite it being on it's deathbed at the time, it turned out to be one of the best game-related gifts I've ever received.

Yuppers, hell, I might try for two back-ups since the PS2 gets heavy play here.

This would have been great news...2 years ago. The system has been out for nearly 8 years in this country(US). They should have reached this magical mass market price point ages ago.

Either way you slice it, this is a great deal for a solid game system with a monster game lineup. Although, I saw these for $99 three weeks ago at Shoprite...believe it or not!

I thought the modders figured out how to make swapping work without the flip-top (a la the original PlayStation models).

I just saw the add for this. It's nice but would have been much better had it come a few years earlier.

To be honest, PS2's should be priced around $79 now.

Sony just needs to start phasing them out, and put the Emotion Engine back in the PS3's

Speaking of the ad, it's amazing that no word has been spoken of what's on the same page as the PS2, and the guarantee of what the stores will have in stock in the morning.

Why start phasing out the PS2 when it makes more money than the PS3? One theory is that the reason the new PS3s can't play PS2 games at all is not just about saving money but because Sony doesn't want the PS3 to play PS2 games. Doing so will supposedly stimulate PS3 software sales. I don't know if that's true or not but nonetheless dropping the PS2 would probably not be in Sony's best interest right now.

Good point. But they still shouldn't be selling for more than $99 eight years after they originally came out.

Famiclones still cost what? $30 or so? Making the parts isn't free and everybody needs their cut.

Why the heck not? Do you know how many PS2s continue to sell every month? If you can sell them for $129, it doesn't take a business genius to see why they wouldn't lower the price.

yeah. Been through at least 9 PS2's since its release. mostly hardware failure issues. as opposed to 3 Xbox's "which were sold or traded for monetary issues" hmmm weird how thing lopside now. Though my 360 has been going strong since 1 year after launch, knock on wood.

/me recalls piece of crap ps1 that had to be upside down to play games.

I've been looking all over to see whether the new slimline PS2s are more reliable in terms of the DREs than their thicker counterparts - anybody know of any site that talks about this? My old-school PS2 gets a DRE on a few games, and really slips the disc around on a few others (mostly the "blue" DVDs on early releases like ICO and Maximo), and I'd get a new one for $99.

This may be a silly question so far into the PS2 life, but can you simply link two slim consoles together for "network" play? And if so about how many games can do this. I have no plans to buy another PS2 soon but if this is possible over a good selection of games it's tempting.

No, because the i-Link port that was on the original fat PS2s has been removed. Games like Timesplitters that had the system link won't work on the slims.

They do have the USB ports still so mice will work on point-and-click games like Resident Evil: Dead Aim.

Again, good point. But them lowering the price a few years ago would have been a way of them "giving back" to the industry for the consumers who have supported them along the way. Besides, since they already sold more than 100 million world wide for price points "above" $99, why can't they sell the next 50 million for $99 or less?

for those of you with laser problems try adjusting the laser by using the POTs on the assembly, get a little bit longer out of it.

some times they just get outa wack and need a through cleaning aswell, got a $20 PS2 because it was hella dirty and didnt work, cleaned it out, no probs now

This is a good deal, but my 6 year old fat ps2 is still going strong.

The slims are tiny though!

and the ps2 has like a thousand good and cheap games so if you don't own one go get one

Well, a mod chip can be used, I'm sure. But, in my opinion, the safest way is to use the flip top/swap magic. I would have messed my system up if I installed a mod chip.

I don't think so. Last I saw at Target, that one was still going for $129.99.

I think they're trying to unload all the black and silver PS2s.

I wish we had gotten more PS2 colors in the U.S. I remember when I saw the pink Japanese slim for sale on playasia, and I thought, "Man, this is girly!" Now, I wish I had bought it instead of the ceramic white.
