Seems like the 60 gig is the golden goose of the ps3's. Do they even make 60 gig's anymore? If not, will the 60 gig actually increase in value?

Please tell me that you're not an ebay seller trying to drum up more hype to increase the value of 60 gb ps3's. A quick google will show anyone the numerous stories about how Sony ceased the production of 60's quite some time ago as well as the fact that it's the last model with the Emotion Engine, et al.

they're not really rare per say, but they are no longer made. Many people are looking for them because they're one of the 2 consoles that actually have hardware based backwards compatibility. They go for more than the 20 GB because they also have the wifi and extras like card readers and such that the 20 GB doesn't have.
I can see them holding their value more than other systems, but even now on the secondary market they arn't selling for what they retailed at. You have to remember these originally retailed for $599, and they were dropped to $499 shortly before being discontinued. most used 60 GB are going about $475 for a used system.
Look for the 80 GB to hold value too, if any new SKU's don't have ps2 compatibility at all either.

hell a local store is selling a 60gig for 500 still guess they figure hey its got 20 more gigs and the emotion chip so its worth more than the 40gig... at least its new tons of these on amazon

Oddly enough I see more of these for sale at local stores than I do of the others. Local game shop has 3 new ones and a used 60 gb.

So is the 60gb the best to get as far as backwards compatability?

I found a 60gb for $375.
$425 after I bought an HDMI cable.
The 20/60GB models will become rare in a few years, just give it time.

Ouch!!
eBay is the place to go for inexpensive HDMI cables, where you can find 6ft cables for less than $10 shipped ... retail outlets are currently price gouging the hell out of that technology.

Consumers, analyists, gaming press, hardcore gamers, casual gamers, pretty much everybody considered the $600 MSRP of the PS3 unacceptable (or at the very least "steep") when it launched.
The PS3 scored low "grades" in 2006/2007 for it's high cost and low "enertainment" return business model ... and the single biggest criticism was, again, over the price tag.
(Sony even did some extensive private market research polling in 2007 to back this up.)
One of Sony's easiest cost-saving measures was to remove the PS2 compataibility (Emotion Engine chipsets, GPUs, Semiconducters, etc.) from the PS3 both in part, and completely. This drastically reduced the price of units, and while it made the market far more prone to purchase the system (buy rates up, what, 300% this year?) ... it also appears to have struck a sour chord with gamers who enjoyed the feature.

Yeah. The HDMI cable is where they screw ya. Yet when I bought my TV, I bought a DVI-HDMI cable (8ft. monster 800 - for my cable box) online, for $20. I've learned never again to buy an HDMI cable, at a store, ever again.
But I was still happy to find a 60gb PS3 for under $500.

Cheap and good!
Also, I bought the 60GB PS3 once it was announced that they were discontinuing it. And I still barely use the thing other than for Bluray.
$499 Canadian (was $400 US at the time) - I'm still glad I got it.

Well, if I were to take a guess as to which models would be "rare" so to speak down the road, my money would be on the 20GB (only saw one in a TRU, ONCE.) and the 80GB that has had only a few months of life before discontinuation. I see no more 80's out there in my journeys as it is now. These systems, with such a short shelf life, imho will be the systems that will hold (or possibly increase) their value years down the road. The 60GB will as well, but maybe not as much so as it has had a longer shelf life...many more of those out there.

The 20 and 60 are the same as far as backward compatibility, both essentially having the important guts of a PS2 in addition to the PS3 hardware. The 60 just has the built in wireless which I consider requisite (and card readers, though I don't care much about them). Either can easily be upgraded to whatever HDD you'd like (I think there are some restrictions, but don't know for sure).
The 80gb has backward compatibility via emulation, which doesn't cover all games, but works quite well from what I've picked up here and there.

Yeah, he's right. I got a HDMI cable for .01 with $3 shipping.
As far as backwards compatibility, I haven't run into any problems with it playing any of my ps1 or ps2 games.

Are you speaking of the 60 or the 80? I personally own the 80 (grabbed one luckily right before they magically vanished in my area) and I have had zero problems with any of the slew of PS2 games I have thrown at it. I know that the compatibility rate is lower than the 20 or 60 obviously, but it must be some odd-ball games that do not work correctly considering how many titles I have tested to be just fine.

No limitations on size. And it won't void your warranty - It's even on Sony's PS3 FAQ, the HD's are user upgradeable. But if you're looking for a 20 or 60gb model now, 99.9% chance you're buying a used one. So that wouldn't really matter anyway. But if you bought one at launch, you're still good to go.
The only thing is it has to be an SATA 2.5". I've heard drive speed doesn't matter, but I'd stick to a 5400rpm HD.
And when you're upgrading the HD, those memory card slots really come in handy.

The 80 gig. I got one for Christmas, since at that time everyone was telling me that the 80 gig was the only one that was backwards compatible.

Same here I have 100+ games (PS1 & PS2 Combined) and all of mine work fine, with the 60 GB.
Also they (sony) cancelled all launch models I remember reading.

I think the 60gb one will be more expensive in the long run. Just based on the fact that it allows you to throw the old PS2 in the closet, and survive with just one system.
I got my 60gb for Christmas as a gift, and my g/f grabbed it from Ebay. Without that flawless (So far) backwards compatibility, there just not a lot going for the PS3 as a system. I use it near exclusively for old PS2 games and Blu-Ray movies.

My parents paid $125 for one. Long story.

What is worse is that the picture quality isn't better between a $300 cable and a $5 cable.
