View Full Version : What's a game that you bring a system out of retirement for?

For me it would have to be Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the NES. If I have a NES hooked up then you can bet Mike Tyson's Punch Out is in it. If I'm testing a NES out to see if it works then guess what? I'm testing it with Mike Tyson's Punch out, and I'm going to play it for at least an hour.

The first sonic on genesis. I have it on compilation disks for Gamecube and Dreamcast, but with out the genesis pad it's not nearly as fun.

NiGHTS into Dreams for the saturn.
Amen to that. I was worried the sequel would impact this in some way, but it's actually made me cherish the Saturn experience even more. Controlling NiGHTS on the Wiimote is weird enough, but even when you go to the GameCube pad it's still really tough to keep your grip on it throughout the run. The Saturn pad was absolutely perfect for the job with it's concaved thumb pad. That vivid color palette they used on the Saturn that evoked their brighter, earlier games like FANTASY ZONE and SPACE HARRIER is also something that has been missed on later systems. Add the fact that there are no adequate ports or emulators for the game, the Saturn's longevity is virtually assured for this title alone (as well as PDS and all the other Saturn exclusives).

I keep everything hooked up at all times, except for the Virtual Boy since I don't have a really good place to keep it out and I don't use it that much anyway so it would just collect dust (that's what you get when the library only has 13 games :/ ). Wario Land and Mario's Tennis are always a good reason to pull it out, though.

emceelokey I have a quick question for you. Was there a big difference between Mike Tyson's Punch out and regular Punch Out. I know that all the fighters were the same except my version wasn't endorsed by Mike and didn't include Mike in the game. Was there any difference in difficulty or was Mike Tyson just quickly added to the Mike Tyson version? I know the last guy on regular Punch Out was Sandman I believe, and if he hit you at all you were knocked out of the ring.

As far as what games leave me hooked up, I just recently played Earthworm Jim for the first time on an emulator, and I'm going to buy the real cart today.

A lot of new posters in this thread...

To answer the question; almost all of my systems are currently hooked up, but my Sega CD, 3DO, and Saturn stay in regular rotation. Recently, Batman & Robin, Star Control II, and Guardian Heroes are keeping me going back.

@MRC

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!! was first. Mr. Dream replaced him after Nintendo dropped Tyson's endorsement. Mr. Dream was exactly the same as Mike Tyson; just a sprite swap.

None of the fighters could "knock you out of the ring" but Tyson's/Dream's uppercut barrage for the first 1:30 of the fight could knock you down with one hit.

I once put up my Saturn and that was the biggest mistake I have ever made! Even if I don't play it for several years in a row, its staying out with the other select systems.

You see, it all started when I bought a few new game systems and realized I had limited shelf space. I thought I would put my Saturn up for a few months while I enjoyed the newer systems and everything would be ok... but eventually I HAD to play some Virtua Fighter.

"OK... thats fine" I said to myself, so I tossed Virtua Fighter 3 in the ol' DC and gave it a spin... But something was wrong... VERY wrong! Where was the memorable music from the first 2 games. This music was "OK" but it wasn't what my ears wanted to hear. Then I noticed the game didn’t look right either. Where is Sarah's infamous blue outfit and what about the others as well. The game looked like a childhood friend that I hadn't seen in 15 years only to find he had been living on the streets. Something there was familiar but It had changed and not for the better. VF3 didn't look, Sound, or play the same as the first two installments.

I started to sweat. "Okay, okay. Don't panic. It'll be alright," I reassured myself as I placed VF 4 Evo into the PS2. "Hey! Sarah! You lost your Coyote Ugly getup and are back to you original blue. What’s that? Your original stage has returned as well? Wow, this is great!" My Virtua Fighter craving was almost satisfied. The graphics were fantastic and it played beautifully. But a few minutes into the game I was plagued with a new question... "Why are my ears bleeding?" Oh yeah, that’s right, BECAUSE THE MUSIC FREAKING SUCKS!!!

The first two VF games had such memorable music. If I had to compare the VF4 music to anything, I would say it's quite akin to :puke:. If I had to compare it to another game however, it would be Ject's boss theme near the end of Final Fantasy X. Ya know... The track that was composed by the handicapped son of a heavy metal master. A world where songs have no rhythm, no melody and the lone handicapped kid keeps screaming "fight. Fight! FIGHT!!!" into the mic because his life is full of resentment and he knows he can never be as good as his father at making music.

Whew... Needless to say I hooked my Saturn back up in an instant. I have yet to try VF 5 but so far I keep coming back to my Saturn for my VF fix. The games look solid, play great, and have awesome music! I think it'll be a long time before Sega can best Virtua Fighter Remix, Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighters Megamix all on one system.

N64 - Mario Party series and Super Mario 64 - has plenty of other great games (Banjo Kazooie, etc)

I learnt the fun of consoles with Super Mario 64, so I hold it in high esteem, and tetris Attack was the first SNES game that proved the SNES was worth spending time on; I now have many N64 and SNES carts as a result.

I'm going ot add Killer Instinct Gold for N64 as well. That was the first used game I bought and was almost my last because when I brought it home it didn't work so I went back to exchange it for another one and I even tested it ut in the store (Funco) and it worked there but when I got back home it didn't even boot up again. It turned out that if you had the expansion pack on in the N64 it would read the game for some reason.

Once or twice a year I fire up my old PSX to play Tony Hawk 2 on. I never have to track down the game because I always just leave it in there. That game's never felt right to me with analog sticks, so I enjoy playing it with the original PSX controllers.

I unleash the Commodore Vic 20 once a month or so to play Vic Avenger (a Space Invaders clone). It's actually a pretty challenging version of the game. The only other piece of software I currently own for the Vic 20 is Gorf, thanks to a recent trade. So that gives me a couple of classic gaming goodies to play on that little computer. It happens to be the oldest system I own.

Those are the only systems I can recall being put away for periods of time over a couple years.

I see that a lot on here, where people post about having not played certain systems for a year, two years or longer.

To each his own but I could never do that. If I ever got to a point where I thought I wouldn't play a system for a couple of years, it would be gone before it got that far.

It might seem silly to some but I actually force myself to play every system I own a minimum of at least once every 2 months or so. I shouldn't say "force" because I enjoy everything I own enough to keep it in my collection, so I consider it productive to rotate my systems regularly. Even stuff like the CD-i, Game Gear and Vic 20. I can always find a way to enjoy myself with them for half an hour or an hour.

If I am going to keep something around in my collection, I damn well am going to play it :)

PS 2- Taito Legends, gotta have my Taito fix, as well as all my other compilation packs, some of my old PSX games like Strider 1&2, and the Puzzle Bobble games

I am curious as to how many gaming consoles you own? I have around 30 or so, so if I were to force myself to play each one every 2 months or so, that would mean playing each system for two days and then moving on to a new one.

I don't really work that way. I get addicted to a system for a month or two at a time. Right now I'm really hooked on the PS3 and Xbox 360 because of my new HDTV, but for months before that it was the Wii and the Xbox. In a couple of months from now, it'll be something else.

Not saying either system is "right" -- the only thing that's "right" is what we enjoy, right?

Sure, happy to oblige.

I don't have anywhere near 30. I rent a single second story bedroom, not even an apartment or house, so space is limited.

I currently have the following systems:

-NES clone (Generation NEX)
-Gameboy & Gameboy Color
-Nintendo 64
-Gamecube
-Sega Genesis 1, 2 & Nomad
-Game Gear
-Dreamcast
-XBox
-PS1
-PS2
-Turbografx 16
-Vic 20
-CDi

I think that is it.

In the past 12 months or so, I have sold off the following systems to free up time for the ones I still own, I didn't even "need" the money I got either.

-Super NES
-3DO
-Yobo
-FC Twin
-Game.com
-Sega CD
-32X
-Saturn
-Atari Jaguar
-2600
-Gameboy Advance (gave this away to a relative)

I agree that neither approach is right or wrong. I already have more games for the systems I own than I can find time to play, which you and most everyone else reading this can relate to. Right now, I have about 15 Franchise Mode games (i.e. EA Sports/2K titles) going on my XBox alone and that ought to keep me tied up for months. Not to mention everything else going on the remaining systems like the PS1, PS2, etc.

bangtango, I'm curious as to why you got rid of the Yobo but kept the NEX. Were there any performance differences between the two? I have a Yobo that I keep hooked up for NES games because my NES is a blinker, but I'm not 100% satisfied with the Yobo's color and sound. Is the NEX any better?

I canned the Yobo because I paid less for it ($20) and was able to get all of my money back. It'd have been harder to get my original $60 back on the NEX if I had sold that. That was just my assumption.

Game compatibility is actually the same, as far as I know.

The difference is that the games which are compatible look and sound slightly better on the NEX, key word being slightly.

A member from here actually did a really long rundown comparing the various NES clones about a year ago.

http://www.runjumpshoot.com/content/11/1/NES-Console-Buyer's-Guide.html

The article is really long so the best page to skim would be:

http://www.runjumpshoot.com/content/11/7/NES-Console-Buyer's-Guide.html

I don't think there is that big of an improvement personally but this guy who did the comparison seems to think so. Just that some games which are "compatible" with both systems happen to be more "glitchy" on the Yobo and run a little smoother on the NES. Like Legend of Zelda. That second page I linked has his observations. The games he posted are accurate, like Zelda and RCR because I tried both games in both machines myself. I'm not sure how many others have the same thing going on.

I do have an extra/second NEX (NIB) if you ever wanted to work out a trade, though. I picked it up at over 60% off from a store that went under around Christmas. If you like, drop me a PM. I don't want an arm or a leg for it by any means. Otherwise it will simply be a spare I keep around.
